Nutritious-Packed Chinese Steamed Chicken and Its Health Benefits **November 12, 2020** `If you can't think of anything to write, go to your kitchen and cook π€£, but if you have nothing to cook, then just watch me do it π` If you have read my previous recipe blogs here, you will know how much I like steaming foods, either it's a viand or snacks, I have already adopted this Chinese style of cooking foods. Another opportunity for me to cook an Authentic Chinese recipe. In more than 3 years of living in Hong Kong, this dish is the best steam recipe for me so far. And this became one of my favorite Chinese recipes. It is not only yummy but also nutritious because of its ingredients. I called this **Nutritious-Packed Chinese Steamed Chicken,** but the real name of this is "*Steam Chicken with Shiitake Mushrooms and Red Dates."* I don't want to call it that way because the ingredients are not only shiitake and red dates. There are a lot more. Check it here! **Cooking Ingredients:** 1 whole chicken
Ginger Green spring onions Red dates Goji berries Dried black fungus/wood ear mushrooms Dried shiitake mushrooms (you can use the fresh shiitake if you want) Dried Lily buds **For the marinade:**
Ginger juice Rice wine Mirin Oyster sauce Soy sauce Sesame White/Black Pepper Some salt, sugar, and flour **Cooking Procedures:** Wash and cut the whole chicken into small pieces.
Soak shiitake mushrooms, black fungus, and lily buds into the water until they become soft. Once they are completely soft, remove the stems and set aside. Boil the black fungus for 5 minutes. Rinse well and cut the hard parts.
Cut ginger and green spring onions into strips (separate the green and white stalks of the spring onions, you will use the green parts for toppings later). Cut the red dates and soft shiitake mushrooms into halves.
**Prepare for the marinade:** Grate a small size of ginger and extract its juice. Mix it with the rice wine.
In a separate bowl, mix 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon mirin, 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
Marinate the chicken with the sauces for 30 minutes or more. (The longer you marinate the chicken, the better its taste) Put it inside the fridge and take it out 30 minutes before cooking.
Put 2 tablespoons of flour to make the sauce slurry. Add some sesame oil at last.
Mix all ingredients with the chicken. (It is tasty if the ingredients are coated with the sauce as well).
Transfer the chicken to a big steaming plate. (Enough for the amount of chicken you have).
Bring a wok of water to boil. Steam in a big wok for 20 minutes. (2 minutes before taking out the dish, take off the lid and garnish some green spring onions on top).
And the final result. Taddaa!! Looks so yummy π€€π€€
Shiitake mushrooms, red dates, lily buds, and black fungus, with ginger and spring onions, are really a great combo. The mixed ingredients bring additional aroma and springiness to the chicken. In fact, Chinese people like using shiitake mushrooms to garnish in pork, dumplings, Chinese soup, and other Chinese steam and stir-fry recipes. It gives earthly flavor and distinctive taste. Moreover, the red dates and goji berries will add sweetness to any dishes. Chinese people treat red dates and goji berries as health tonic, food, and a traditional herb. While the black fungus will add texture due to its jelly-like consistency and distinct chewiness. The combination of all ingredients creates a classic combo with the chicken.

Wow! Love the mushrooms, Jane! Great recipe you can already see that it's nutritious without the facts info! I really wonder what chicken feet taste like, Papa said it's really good but I haven't tried it. Chef ka din pala? π
Seriously? You haven't tastes chicken feet yet? What about our adobo chicken feet in pinas? It's so yummy. Good for pulutan π€£ Not really a chef . trying hard chef π€£π€£
When that looks so good yet i don't really like berries in my food. But the number of mushroom in that looks so tempting too :""
I like berries more than mushrooms π it's yummy. Tell grandma to cook it for sure she knows it
Oh she knows this dish but she doesn't put berries. She uses pineapples but i don't eat that too πππ I'll eat fruits as fruits and not in dishes
Pineapple for steaming? Haven't tried it m. But i cooked chicken with pineapple and potatoes last week
Yeah and it tastes good on the chicken and the bit of sauce on it but i really can't come to eat it like that :"" no pineapples on food for me
I like pineapples π especially for sweet and sour chicken or pork.. I tasted it here and it's yummy. Before in the Ph... I also cook sweet and sour chicken nuggets and adobo with pineapple. But eating pineapple alone is also good.
My preferences must really be different XD why does everyone like pineapples in foooodd! It's good as a fruit alone :"" but i do like sweet and sour pork but sweet adobo is so weird to me
Don't forget that our menudo also have pineapple π even our salads.. You should try adobo with pineapple..it is really yummy. We even tried adobo with ketchup..the sauce is like those bbq sauce.
No no no ;;-;; no pineapples in food ;;-;; unless it's to make the food sweet but no pineapples. Well bbq is basically soy sauce, ketchup and sugar or honey. That's the basic mix for that
Lol.. You really don't like pineapple in foods π Bbq flavor chicken is yummy .you should try
I cook chicken bbq at home a lot. Basta no pineapples in the viand π ββοΈπ ββοΈπ ββοΈπ ββοΈ
Haha.. Sure..
Sobrang dami pang soup nla. My mga ibat ibat dried na hayop.. My pagong pa nga eh.. Tas mga insects..
kawawa nmn yung mga pagong.
Kya nga. My shark's fin pa... Sobrang mahal like thousands yung price. .
Love the recipe. I didn't know that there are red dates and the fact that it can be added to a cuisine. Twenty minutes of steaming, would that be enough to make sure the chicken meat is fully cooked?
Chicken meat is easy to cook π especially if it's chopped into pieces. But if it's a whole chicken.. You need 30 minutes or more. You can check my chicken white cut recipe linked below this article.
I see. It's because I always want to make sure I don't eat raw foods or something that's not fully cooked, since there might be some microbacterias lurking in the meat.
Are you a perfectionist? Western people even eat meat like medium cooked lamb π it's a bit raw.. And vegetable salad are raw too..but it's yummy
Not neccesarily a perfertionist. I just don't like eating anything raw. As for vegetable salad, I make sure to toss the vegetables in a hot water before preparing it to remove the microbes.
Oh. You are health conscious... For me, i don't like eating raw meat.. For the veggies blanching is a good way to cook it..
Nah just neat freak. I'm germaphobic that's why.
Sometimes we need to be exposed to germs to make our immune system stronger π it's just like how we combat our fear, is to face it.
I know some of those ingredients but the Red dates, I'm now curious if how's the taste of that. Anyway, chinese and korean foods used a lot of spices in their foods eh. You can now get a husbandnbecause you can cook so well hehe.
Res date is sweet... I don't want to get married though. π am not really good at cooking. Am just trying hard to cook.. Sometimes the taste is not good lol
Sweet? Is thay a good combination I mean it's sweet. If he loves you, he will accept you even if you have the most horrible cooking skills, same I don't want to gey married too hehe
Yes it gives more flavor to the chicken. Even used it in some chinese dishes.. You should try one. You can also use red dates for making desserts.. .i guess we are alike.. Being single is happier that getting married π€£
I don't think we have that kind of ingredients here. So i can't really try it, sadly. I so agree, we have so much freedom to do whatever we want yay.
From what country are you? π True.. Hapoy being single. No worries, no burdens, no responsibilities... Just enjoy life
I am actually from the other side of the world.
Wooh. That is cool..just like lee min ho's movie "eternal monarch" can travl to other sides of the world..
Oh, you watch thay already? Me too, i like it so much specially Woo Do Hwan π€©
Oh i like him too.. He is so cool especially when wearing shades ππ
Cguro... At for sure mahal.. Yng lily buds, actually yung sa puso ng saging lng yan.. Yung prang my pusporo sa loob.. Yan ata yan. Haha. Not sure
Talaga? hahahaha nahirapan pa ko mag isip, puso ng saging lang pala π ay marami niyan dito π
Parang ganun..but not sure.. Dried lng sya..
