Working abroad isn't as easy as you think it is. Some of the challenges that we have to withstand are homesickness and stress. And one way to cope with negative consequences is to have fun during our holidays. Every holiday, foreign workers here gather with friends in parks, go to beaches or hike, or even throw a party and do fun activities.
One example is this group of friends I came across last Sunday at the park where I stayed while waiting for the rain to recede. This group was dancing, following the steps from the video they were watching. Some were using TikTok and other forms of entertainment. I, on the other hand, was just watching from the corner.
I felt like it was so good to dance with a group of friends to release those unwanted toxins in the body while having fun. At the same time, I felt like my life was too mundane not to do such things and engage with other groups of people, lol. I was into blogging and communicating with my family anyway.
Many are adventurous and are into hiking. My friend and I are into this too, depending on the season. There are a lot of hidden paradises in Hong Kong's countryside that are worth exploring. And workers, tourists, and even locals are visiting those places. However, having fun needs certain precautions as well, because there aren't any safe places outdoors, especially when having fun in the mountains.
In almost five years of staying here, I've heard a lot of stories about incidents and accidents where adventurous Filipinos and other foreign workers were involved, some of which turned to death.
That's the saddening part when you're out to have fun and enjoy, but you never know the accidents that will come your way. Life indeed is untimely and accidents are meant to happen regardless of the precautions and caution we apply.
I opted to open my FB the other day to take a look at something since we are planning to do certain things in the future. After checking something, I opted to check my feed and watch a few short videos. I stumbled upon this post of a Filipina and the caption piqued my interest.
Out of curiosity, I opened the video, and later I found out that it was taken here in Hong Kong a week ago, as the person taking the video mentioned the word Indonesian and the place was quite familiar. I was terrified while watching the video and I searched for more posts affiliated with the incident. There I found this post on scmp.com where I usually read the latest news about things here in HK. More videos about the incident actually went viral, and I was too outdated about it.
The incident was about an Indonesian worker who fell into the waterfalls, disappeared, and was found dead at the bottom of the water. Based on the video, a friend of the missing woman tried to rescue her but to no avail, and even almost died as well. Thankfully, some men on the scene voluntarily dived into the water to rescue the woman who tried to rescue the missing one. The woman disappeared as well for certain times before she got back to the surface of the water and was saved by a man.
However, the other woman went missing, so folks on the scene called for rescuers. At a certain time, the rescuers arrived, and they started the operation of finding the missing woman. The video was cut as instructed by the police officer. And based on the news posted by scmp.com, the missing woman was found dead at 5:30 in the afternoon.
It was a holiday that turned into a deadly accident. Who would have thought that it would be her last? The Filipinos on the scene were terrified as well. This would also serve as a lesson for everyone to take safety precautions and mind their actions when doing outdoor fun activities.
There's nothing wrong with having fun, as long as you mind your life as well. Yet, again, accidents are meant to happen regardless of how careful we are.
This was one of the waterfalls that my friend and I wanted to visit. But because of this news, we opted not to. There are stories too that say that people go missing here each year for some mysterious and unexplainable reason. Not just in this place, but in other waterfalls too.
Although it's quite absurd to believe such mysterious things, they do happen in our country too. If Filipinos have beliefs, the Chinese have a lot. And those mysterious missing hiker incidents usually happen in the Sai Kung part of HK. That's the place with lots of tourist spots and trails, along with interesting stories written about its history.
According to some folks, those missing hikers incidents have a connection to what they call "yin and yang energies," Feng Shui, and whatsoever, that only Chinese old folks could explain. Some are written in history, and some remain untold and unfolded. If you are curious about such kinds of stories, feel free to search for "mysterious missing hikers incidents in Hong Kong" and you will read different stories connected to it. Here's one, click here.
But honestly? I want to see those mysterious places and feel the mysterious feelings others are saying, lol. You know, I'm a curious cat ðŸ¤.Â

I've only known this kind of tragedy in movies. They do really happen in reality.
