In this opportunity, I will talk specifically about the colors "Black and White." But first we will define color as an expression of light. Some materials absorb and reflect specific wavelengths of visible light, which causes objects to take on a certain color to the human eye. A blue flower reflects and scatters light back to us, while absorbing all other wavelengths of light, so what you see is the color blue. When almost all the light is reflected, what you see is white. When not all the light is reflected it is black.
As demonstrated in any rainbow, black is not in the visible color spectrum. All other colors are reflections of light except black. Black is the absence of light. Unlike white and other shades, black can only exist in nature without any light. Some consider white to be a color, because white light comprises all shades of the visible light spectrum. Likewise, many consider black to be a color because other pigments are combined to create it on paper.
In that sense, black and white are special cases because they are not considered colors, but that is not entirely true. White is the mixture of all colors, or in its effect, of all primary colors. Black is not a color, but the absence of color. This is the case when there is no light. The reason is that the combination of colors produces a destructive interference in the sum of electromagnetic waves. Remembering that light is a wave, we must include the property of the waves that is the interference that occurs with the sum of them.
The wave has a positive and a negative part. If the positive and negative parts are added together, the result is a new wave. But if they are in opposite position is a destruction of waves. For this reason, televisions use red, green and blue lamps to emit light so that we can see it; while the printer uses blue, violet and yellow ink to cover the white color of the sheet.
On the other hand, the gray color is white of less intensity. As we have just seen, black and white give white, but if the white light is of low intensity, our brain perceives it as a "mixture" with the black background and we see it as "gray". By modifying the intensity of white we obtain the different shades of gray.
As for the psychology of these colors we can find:
- White color: it is the favorite color of innocence, the color of good and spirits, winter, north, the color of light and nothingness, the clean. It is the most sensitive to light, sum or synthesis of all colors so it symbolizes the absolute, unity, peace or surrender.
- Black: It is the favorite color of power, violence, death and the universe. It is also the favorite color in some professions. It symbolizes business, elegance. It also characterizes mystery, error, evil and in a negative way the impure and evil. It is important to note that these colors are also called neutral colors.
In short, these colors are considered the perfect match. Black and white in decoration is a classic that adapts to all styles, both modern and traditional. A contrast between light and dark, functionality and elegance, they never go out of fashion. Black and white in color theory is a much more important subject than we suppose. The popular belief that colors are lightened with white and darkened with black is one of the most common misconceptions. It can even be referred to in marketing; the color white symbolizes laziness, it is used in minimalist campaigns where the protagonist is color and black is associated with drama or elegance, or nocturnal.
