As unbelievable as it is, there is such a thing as chocolate poisoning and it doesn’t just happen to dogs but also in humans. What causes this is the theobromine that’s found in chocolates, teas, sodas and some other foods, but mostly in chocolate since it is chocolate’s main constituent. Cocoa beans already contain a lot of theobromine, and that amount is reduced as it’s processed so luckily, it’s not something to worry about.
Aside from theobromine, dogs also can’t consume caffeinated items so don’t you dare give your pets caffeinated food- theobromine and chocolate actually have very similar structures that’s why to humans, both chocolate and coffee are equally as addicting, and to animals, is equally as toxic.
For humans, it’s normally not a huge threat since we don’t really consume raw cocoa, chocolate or coffee in ridiculously large quantities, plus we have the enzymes needed to digest it at least, but what about the dogs and other animals? They don’t really have the enzymes we have. Feeding dogs chocolate is basically like wanting to feed humans grass. We won’t be able to eat it and will probably just throw it up.
This is the amount of chocolate that a dog or any other pet will be able to consume before any symptoms show (the level followed for caffeine is the one for sweet cocoa since caffeine has a stronger effect than chocolate) but you'll honestly just know that they've eaten over their body limit when they start vomiting ;-;
Wow nice detailed explanation on how and why the chocolate is poisonous for dogs. I wonder if dogs do like chocolate or not?
