Funmilayo happens to be the only daughter and child of the family, her parent did everything they could to give her a good life. It wasn't easy for them but they managed to do everything possible to give her good education with the hope of her getting a good job and a wealthy husband to change the family's financial status.
After school, she searched for a job but didn't get any. She had these friends they started together from childhood, they were doing pretty well and Funmilayo's parents were so concerned that they started putting pressure on their daughter. They wanted her to start bringing money home and she wasn't ready to go into what her friends were doing to get a job, her friends were staying in the city pretending to have a good job but they were into prostitution.
It soon became an every morning dose for Funmilayo, her parent would compare her with her friends. All they wanted from her was to pay back everything they did for her, they couldn't wait to start eating the fruit of her labor.
Months pass and she was still struggling to get a job since she wasn't ready to dance to the beat of the company bosses who are obsessed with her huge backside. At a point, her parent even told her to use what she had to get what she wanted but she didn't listen.
On this fateful day, tragedy struck and it had to do with her friends who got involved with some shit while going through their daily prostitution business. They went out with this group of guys who promised them a huge sum of money unknown to them that they were thieves who has been on the police radar for some time and unfortunately for them, they were trailed to the nightclub they went to.
They were having fun when the police walked in with heavy weapons, the thieves opened fire immediately they saw the police and it became a gun battle. One of the girls was hit by a stray bullet and she died immediately while the other was arrested because the guys escaped and the police believed that she was close to them, she should be able to reveal their residence and other information but she knew nothing. Their news spread like wildfire and people got to know where they get money to purchase the luxury thing they oppress their mates with.
The following morning, Funmilayo's parents started with their morning dose for their daughter.
They said lots of things forgetting what happened to their daughter's friends and immediately her father said, "LOOK AT YOUR MATES". Funmilayo was bold to ask them, IS IT THE DEAD ONE or THE ONE IN PRISON?.
Her parent became speechless.
The issue of comparison is one thing that has driven a lot of people to their early grave in the world today, people fail to appreciate their little progress because they are carried away with other's achievements forgetting that we all have our time to reach our peak in life. We all have our destined time to become great but we mustn't be idle while waiting for that moment in life, we must be prepared ahead of that time.
Comparing ourselves isn't a bad thing when we get inspired by their success, it only gets wrong when we become toxic while comparing ourselves with others. Not every success comes cleans and trying to walk in the person steps could lead us into destruction, there is more to what we see about people success and that doesn't mean that everyone is doing something illegal to be successful, there are people who have worked really hard to be where they are today.
One thing we are failing to do is comparing ourselves with the people who are below us, we are always focused on the people ahead and it drives us really crazy because we get exhausted or even get into trouble while trying to match their levels. While we are looking above, it is important that we look below us because there are people who are struggling to achieve the little that we have.
It is important for us to also look back at the people who have lost their lives while pursuing the success we are also pursuing, we ain't better than them and we must understand that grace is what has kept us alive and it is what has allowed us to keep trying.
Conclusion:
We mustn't be blinded by the desperation to reach the height of other people in life, we have our limit to reach at a particular point in life but that doesn't mean you won't eventually reach the peak of your dreams in life.
Be satisfied and appreciate the things you have achieved in life while you work to achieve more in life and things would fall in place for you. Live a life you wouldn't regret at the end, live a life that the upcoming generation would emulate, be a person whose journey would inspire others and not mislead them.
