In answering a question related to writing, especially formally, we are obliged to write the sentence in correct grammar using the right vocabulary. In such a question where the questionnaire is a strange word that you have just seen for the first time, and you must look for the related term such as synonyms and words alike, you shall look closely at the given hints—using the Part of speech, prefixes, and context clues. For today's blog, I will discuss the three fundamentals of answering a vocabulary-related question in civil service examinations.

Well, from my point of view, this kind of article is a two way or even a tree bird in one stone, such some also benefited within my review materials, also I get the review of my own, and this could also help us, not only who wanted to take the exam but those people who wanted their writings to improve more. Let's begin the review.

PART OF SPEECH

It's common in every Filipino, especially me, who wasn't that pro in foreign languages such as English. To understand more about the "Part of Speech," we should know the 'nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Nouns- is the name of person, place, animal, and things etch. The Verb is used to describe the action of the noun. The adjective is modified or describes the noun; the adverb is used to describe or modify the action words or the verbs.

In looking for a related word or sound like a word that was given and it was your first time reading the strange word, you must put in your head that if the word is Nouns the answer is a noun, and the particular word is a verb the answer must be a verb, same with adjective and adverb.

Ex. ARBITRATE (Verb)

  • a. Acquit

  • b. Recapitulation

  • c. Adjudicate

  • d. Forgiveness

  • e. Willful

You might hear the word "ARBITRATE" from news about the arbitrate ruling between the Philippines and China in the West Philippine Sea. It was a verb that described the judgment of the civil court giving the Philippines the title owner of the sea.

In looking for the right answer cross out the none verb. RECAPITULATION and FORGIVENESS are both nouns, Recapitulation in act of summarizing things and Forgiveness is an act of forgiving. While WILLFUL is an adjective. Is China willing to roll what the United Nations verdict called? For the word willful. While ACQUIT is also a verb yet, it seems like an antonym of the given word. The Philippines is acquitted as the will owner of the West Philippine Sea.

The best answer is ADJUDICATE.

In another point of review, it's actually an obvious question and answer. ARBITRATE and ADJUDICATE. Is both a verb that describes the decision or judgment

PREFIXES

Still, remember the prefix and suffixes? But now I will just discuss the prefix. There are two basic prefixes we used the NEGATIVE and POSITIVE prefixes. The positive common prefix we used is (pro, re, over, and super) and the negatives are (a, ab, an, anti, contra, in, etc.).

Within the same problem like any part of speech if the strange word is a Positive prefix what we should look for is also positive, same as the negative one.

Ex. ABDUCT (ab-negative)

  • a. Magnanimous

  • b. Restrain

  • c. Free

  • d. Kidnap

  • e. Jeopardized

For sure your answer will be KIDNAP but how should we see if we were correct in our answer? All the given except the KIDNAP seems like a Positive and the 'ab' is a prefix for negatives. Like the given hint in Positive is for positive, negative prefix if nor negatives.

CONTEXT CLUE

This is normally what we were doing in blogging, I read a lot of bloggers here introducing a new word to us, yet they give a clue for what was the meaning of the word.

Ex. RELEVANT issues about divorce in the Philippines after Moira and Jason's break-up scandal were discussed.

  • a. Pertinent

  • b. Unique

  • c. Unrelated

  • d. Inapplicable

  • e. Abhor

What was your answer?

Ex. The affidavit of Amber Heard contains MALICIOUS accusations against Johnny Depp.

  • a. Sensible

  • b. Nasty

  • c. Pleasant

  • d. Kind

  • e. Gentle

What was your answer?

See I don't have to choose if I will review or make an article for I could do both, lol. Thank guys.

Disclaimer: I am not a pro or majored in English, that is is why I am reviewing. If you knew better techniques and have something it's better to share. thanks.

For me, I just find synonym or antonyms in grammarly keyboard, I don't like to use words too, that I don't understand, that's why I search on Google before using any word. Relevant _pertinent Malicious _nasty Am I right?, just a guess, I'm poor with vocabulary.

This article is so beneficial for many of us here and it really matters indeed to learn about all of these in English. You're brilliant!

These are very important to learn, not just for English majors, but to all of us who are bound to communicate whether through speaking or writing. In addition, we must also learn about the sentence construction itself using those concepts, such as giving consideration on the rules under subject-verb agreement.

As an English major this is very interesting to me. And I agree many of us use new words that sometimes makes the readers confused or even alter the true meaning and thoughts of the message given. That is why even though I am an English teacher I don't use such if the time does not require. I always go with simple english.
