The Myth Of Sierra Madre: Again Luzon Under Attacked By Typhoon May-may
I have been ranting about typhoons at the start of Ber-month, there are countless typhoons this year's end of the quarter, and now we are again under not-so-good circumstances. Another typhoon had been listed, and we had good weather two days ago. Yet Yesterday and today, the weather was sickening. It's cold outside, and the winds are still in blow. Internet connection was poor, and every people just wanted to stay home for security. Animals are hibernating, and my dogs and rabbits seem to enjoy a good and natural nap the whole day.
You might question the scene where all of these typhoons ranged in Luzon, the North and central part of Luzon Island. Most of my virtual friends here were from Mindanao and might not know what Myth behind it was. Of course, this was just a myth taught us in school. I heard this story in Elementary where the subject is all the "Anyong Lupa" or the topics about landforms.
Ilokano's widespread Myth was the 'Biag ni Lam-Ang or Life of Lam-Ang', a brave man who favoured God and goddesses. Lam-Ang's story evolved with revenge, for his father went to some places, yet some tribe had captured him. The moment Lam-Ang comes out from his Mothers belly, one of the first questions he asks that, 'where is his father '.
The story evolves from a newborn child who talks about the moment he was born, and he was given unbeatable strength to duel other tribes that kill his father.
The one Myth of Ilokano-Tagalog is the Sierra Madre, a horror belief that the mountain alone has mystery. The mountain radios the shape of a sleeping woman. That's the sign it's seen everywhere, as there will be said fairies and goddesses were trying to protect the mountain from people.
Sierra is a dedicated mother of two children; it's Iloko at tagalo, (a colourful presentation of Tagalog who resides in Central and Southern Luzon, and Iloko or Ilokano who lives in the North and upper part of Luzon). She promised to protect her kids no matter what. The threat was from Lusong.
Lusong was in-loved with Sierra in their younger days, but Sierra happened to love someone else, not Lusong. It was Busong who was the great warrior of all time. Busong and Sierra loved each other and became a great family.
Lusong is jealous, and one of their promises is that he will get revenge for the heartbreak he got from the two, Sierra and Busong. And that would be painful if he tried to hurt the children.
So often, he will blow a challenging wind to punish all of the traitors of his love. But Sierra will do anything to protect her children. She always offers herself to get first before her children.
A year of protecting her children never ends. But now, in the modern world, Sierra is losing its power. Lusong is becoming more dominant in this new age. Sierra is now losing some part of herself due to mining and illegal deforestation.
They said that Myth is just a myth, but the story is still in process. We expect the ending to be hurtful as Sierra falls, and Lusong's goal to hurt Iloko at tagalo will come to life. Just a myth, but it happened now in real life.
Lusong knows Sierra is losing its power, so Ber months, Lusong's Power increased due to Habagat and Amihan. He tries to get revenge because he was hurt too much for loving Sierra.
There was no ending to the Myth, and maybe they want that the Ilokano and Tagalog will see the results in our eyes.
Ilokano's stories were all about revenge as still coming to those times when tribes and tribes were still fighting for power and lands. Luzon has diverse stories of people of different tribes.
That's the creative story of why typhoons are always in Luzon. But it's all Myth.
At the moment, we were preparing for the best and worse, for Luzon was just attacked just a few weeks back, and most of our co Filipino are still grieving their loss. Some farmers lose their crops, other animals by floods, and even the life of their loved ones. Now another chapter of the challenge will begin.
On the other hand, some farmers saw its benefits as they prepared for the next cropping season. They were preparing the land for the upcoming planting season.
We were safe as a lot of typhoons happened in our place, as we were living in the upper land part of Cagayan Valley, but we still hoped for the best for all the people who would get affected.
Prayers and a lot of prayers. Thanks for reading.
I heard about the story of Lam-ang way wayback in my younger years but I cannot recall it all not until I read your article. But honestly, even if its just a myth, Sierra really a protector and how I wish others will also value the mountain before it will be too late.
