Rocking back and forth on his chair, the expensive ring be once looked at in awe and admiration now seemed to him like nothing but a rusty old metal resting on a table as he stared at it with a deep frown on his face. His mind flashed back to what happened only three hours ago.
The disgrace and embarrassment Grace put him through suddenly made him furious. If she had said "No" in front of those tens of people, he wouldn't have felt it much. Amidst tens onlookers who were also eating in the restaurant he proposed to her, kneeling while presenting the ring, uttering the all time proposal phrase "will you marry me?" with a near idiotic smile on his face as he presented the ring. He had been in a relationship with Gracey for almost a year now and she's the embodiment of anything he'd ever wanted in a woman : Beauty and Character. They've never for once argued or had any disagreement of some sort and she'd never shown any aversion towards him. He showered Gracey with love, affection and attention and what did she pay him back with?
Upon his proposal, Gracey face immediately went blank and her eyes widened. She stood from her seat without uttering a single word, stormed out of the restaurant as she turned deaf ears to calls of George as he called after her. He was so embarrassed that he he hadn't the courage to go after her. All he could do was call and stare. The applause from the already forming small crowd slowly ceased as they stared from George to Gracey in bewilderment. On his way home after getting hold of himself, he tried calling her several times but she didn't pick and here he in his house with several doubtful thoughts flashing in his head?
"Have I done something wrong?"
"Has she been playing me? "
"Doesn't she love me? "
"Doesn't she think me worthy of her?"
"Isn't she ready for marriage?".. "perhaps she was joking when she had said she doesn't see herself getting married to anyone else if not me", George thought to himself, "what other explanation could there be for why what happened today happened!".
Beginning to get more furious and tired from his own thoughts, George decides to have an early night. He checked his phone for text messages from her, found none, went to his bedroom, changed and headed to the bathroom for a shower. He had his phone ringing just when he got himself covered in lather. He rinsed immediately, dashes out of the bathroom into the bedroom. With water still dripping from his body and hands he picked up his phone and saw it was James, his friend who called. With a disappointed look on his face and a deep sigh, he answered the call:
George: Hello James, do I owe you money?
James: Come on buddy! It's just me showing some lurrrv! Can't a homie call to check up on his fellow home again?
From he sound of his voice, George concluded James was drunk and he cut the call, besides he couldn't here him clearly as he seems to be clubbing. He wasn't in the mood for small talks this night. He just wanted to sleep and forget about everything.
"Good God", he muttered after keeping the phone on the drawer, the time was 9:26pm, "I need to talk to Gracey tomorrow". He yawned and and crashed on his king-size bed.
