The intelligence of most animals in the animal kingdom are greatly underrated, animals like dogs and cats are often liked to being greatly dependent on people for their needs and lack the knowledge of what they can do by themselves or even capable of. The truth is some animals have proven to even rival the intelligence of human beings, animals like orca, cats, dogs have proven to have a very high IQ. Well without further ado let’s take a look at the top six most intelligent animals that exist in the modern day world.

This list is not based on hierarchy, but just the list of animals considered as the smartest

Dolphins, and whales;

Dolphins and whales are very similar to primates. One of this reason is because they are mammals, a dolphin has a very large brain. The brain of a dolphin is very large and relative to it’s body size. The cortex of the human brain is highly convoluted ( that’s is the front of the brain is twisted or coiled like ), but dolphins have even more folds than that of a human being. Dolphins have also been tested and have passed the mirror self awareness test, animals like chickens will subsequently fail this test because of their in ability to passive that it’s their reflection, they end up attacking the mirror or the reflection of themselves. Whales on the other hand have a perception of what’s right and what’s wrong , there are many cases of whales attacking wild water animals that try to attack humans.

Pigs

Pigs have shown that they have the ability to solve difficult problems like mazes, they also have the ability to understand and display emotions and understand symbolic languages. You still underestimate their intelligence? Piglets understand the concept of reflection at a younger age much faster than humans do. Some six weeks old piglets were tested using a reflection of food on the mirror they were facing, these piglets were able to work out the correct location of the food, it takes human babies months to understand reflection. Pigs also can play video games!, yes that’s right, pigs understand abstract representations and can use this knowledge to play video games using joysticks.

Gorillas

These massive and brilliant looking beasts have very unique and interesting properties; like humans, gorillas are primates, and have seemed to gain the skill of communicating using sign language and could form original sentences to communicate with smarter beings like humans. A gorilla named Koko became very famous for being able to learn sign languages and caring for pet cats, they are really just that intelligent’

Elephants

Known as the most gigantic and massive land animal, the brains of these animals have also got quite the fame for being the largest brains of any land animal. The cortex of Elephants have just as many neurons as that of a human being. Elephants have a sharp memory and seem to have the spirit of co-operation among themselves. They also demonstrate self-awareness and tend to play with one another.

Chimpanzees

Link

Chimpanzees are closely related to human beings on the animal kingdom, no wonder they would easily make it to the list, and no wonder they would show a very similar intelligence to that of human beings. These animals create weapons and tools for themselves to use in their daily life, tools like small knife like woods can easily be carved by these animals and used to cut fruits, spears are also carved by these animals, they tend to display a wide range of emotions and could easily pass the mirror test. They can also learn sign languages to communicate with us.

Ravens and crows

Link

If you guessed it you’re right. The entire corvid family ( family of birds like crow) is clever . these birds are the only non-primate that can produce their own tools, they recognize human faces, so you don’t want to get on their bad side. Scientists have even likened their intelligence to that of a seven year old human child.

I guess the one thing that beats their intelligence is a scare crow

Chimpanzee and gorilla have always be known to be smart including sharks too, the rest I don't know much of but I'm glad I did now.

I don't think I can consider sharks to be smart, I believe they live by their wits and instincts.

By virtue of my previous knowledge, I've always known Pigs to be smart but didn't realise that they were able to take note of their reflections in the mirror.

This is really interesting. I never knew that pig is smart to the extent of playing games. I usually know pigs to be "foolish" because of the way they move anywhere with dirts

Well, you can't consider them as foolish. Pigs move in mud because they are aware theta mud cools them off, they lack sweat pores.
