She kept her head held high as she sat on the throne that her mother had sat in and her mother before her. It was hard to think that she would never grace these halls again, that she would never set herself upon this throne to hear the burdens of the people. She would never feel those burdens settle upon her shoulders.
Just thinking about them had become a burden itself. But that burden was about to be set free. She heard the screams as the enemies broke through the fence, continuing their advance. Their advance towards the castle.
Adrenaline pounded in her veins as her body begged her to stand, to run, to move. She remained firmlyin her seat. Her head not once slipping, her eyes never once met the floor.
"Chin up, Princess or the crown slips." Her mother's favorite phrase echoed through her head. That was the only reason she had stayed rooted to this damned palace even as the sounds of swords clanging rang straight through the halls.
The look in her mother's eyes as she fled, her head down and tears pooling in her eyes. The way her crowned slipped off, the sound of the gold and jewels as it struck the floor.
"Chin up, Princess or The Crown Slips."
The last of the guards must have fallen because the doors were being banged open. Several men entered the throne room, a tear slipped down her cheek. Her eyes met the eyes of the enemy, head held high and crown resting study.
The men pulled their swords all aimed for her chest. She rose from the throne and her eyes held a form of defiance even as she approached her death. The crown never slipped as the pain exploded in her chest and her life force drained from her body.
The only sound as her eyes went dull was the sound of her crown meeting with the floor.
Chin up, princess or the crown slips.
