COLORS

The world is filled with various colors, and these are what we are going go talk about.

Colors have varied psychological effects to humans concerning their behavior, feelings, emotions, and performance. By having researches and scientific study on color psychology, psychologists tend to predict how humans respond to a given color. Moreover, this does not only about the natural matter that occurs; the effects are also anchored to their cultural beliefs and belonging.

Blue is the color that suggests wisdom, honesty, and tranquility. As the color of the sea and sky, it also signifies stability, inspiration, health, and serenity. However, along with this color’s negative psychological effects are: (1) it is often associated with sadness and loss; blue appears to be icy and cold, (2) since it is a dark cool color, it has a gloomy and severe effect – it expresses depression and anxiety, and (3) persons who chooses blue are most likely to be too predictable, cold-hearted, and lacks the sense for adventure and spontaneity.

Tint is a mixture of color with white, thus, it increases the lightness, while the shade is its opposite. It is a mixture of black and increases darkness. For example, pink is a tint because it came out after mixing white or lightness to color red. On the other way around, maroon is a shade because it came out after mixing black or darkness to color red.

There are three cool colors and they are blue, green, and violet. They are considered to be a part of the cool spectrum because they represent water or grass which are cool or calms down a person. These colors are soothing to the eyes and they are not overpowering. It also tends to make the space wider or larger.

ARTS

Art comes in different forms and have various ways of making people feel and think. When you see a painting, read a poetry, or listen to music, you achieve stories and ideas. Art always come from somewhere and it is the very purpose of every art to stimulate the minds of whoever sees it or hears it. You also achieve motivation and inspiration because art was meant to influence and tell things that we didn’t know before or we didn’t want to hear before. Art also provides us knowledge. When you read, you can enhance your writing skills, grammar, and vocabulary. When you see a painting, you get satisfaction and amazement. When you listen to a song, you can calm down, relieve your stress, or express your feelings.

In this art of Juan Luna, we can see that there are men dragging bodies on the center, there are spectators on the left side of the painting, and on the right part is heartbreaking too because a woman is grieving for the death of supposedly the love of her life and there also seems to be a man holding a torch and looking for a loved one. It is also evident that they are situated in a dark platform or stadium.

I think Juan Luna’s intention in painting Spoliarium is to awaken the minds and to open the eyes of the Filipinos from being ignorant about political oppression knowing that our country was colonized by the Spanish. It is an art that manifests as a metaphor to what the Filipinos have experienced or suffered from during the colonial periods. With violence and oppression, many lives are being sacrificed – and that is what we need to understand, work on with, and prevent from happening with people who are either from different land or with from our own.

Juan Luna’s Spoliarium shows an event during the Roman Empire wherein there are men dragging mercilessly the bloodied bodies of gladiators who are treated as slaves away from the wide arena going to a place so dark – where other fallen gladiators are dumped. The word Spoliarium is a Latin word which means a basement of the Roman Colosseum where from it looks like, the setting of the painting.
