Have you been embarrassed because of your article?
I’m going to share a story from the past about the feeling of embarrassment because of my essay write up.
Perhaps some may raise your eyebrows because it is just an article so what could be the reason for it to be humiliated.
Some writers in well known publications received a lot of criticism and are bullied oftentimes. The worst was that it could end in an unpleasant situation. But these writers sometimes hit beyond the boundaries that’s why they end up being criticized.
In the past, writers used a nom de plume or pseudonym or just a pen name in their articles or books. The reason was to protect themselves or for the growth of their writing career. But in this digital era, most authors are no longer using a pseudonym, there are still various reasons for some writers why they prefer to use a pen name.
Four reasons why authors use a pen name
They want to try something new
They need a fresh start
They can’t publish under their real name
Their real name is already in use
How to use a pen name
Find a name and claim it
Use the name on your selected works
Inform your publisher
Register the work

The unforgettable embarrassment
Going back to my story about why I felt humiliated with my essay was during my college years. I wasn’t good at writing a full English essay during my first year in college and my comprehension skills of reading English stories and novels was very low. Although I have mentioned in one of my previous posts that I was used to reading when I was a kid, that was in our own native language though.
The college institution I was enrolled with is a public university. It was a privilege to be graduated from the largest university in our place.
During my freshman year, our English professor gave us a topic to write an essay. I admit that during those days my writing skills with English as a language was like a tree that branches it's roots in any direction. Somehow I have managed to create a three pages English essay.
The school takes an hour bus ride from our house and before I went directly to the campus I will pass by my classmate who was living near the university. Together we will go to the school campus.
During that day when we were about to submit our essay, my classmate's father happened to take a look at my writings while I was at my classmates house waiting for him.
Then on our way to the campus while on a public utility vehicle, my classmate said, “Father told me that he doesn't seem to understand anything in your essay.”
I can’t recall anymore of how I responded to my classmate but it was remarkable. I felt embarrassed without them knowing how hard the impact on me was.
So after that incident I made it clear to myself that I will do my best to make my writings as easy and concise as possible.
I can no longer remember what the essay was about because it was a long time ago. Maybe I have used too many exaggerated phrases or that I have used words that are too deep. Or perhaps the way I constructed sentences was really poor.
So whenever our English professor gave us a book to read and made a report through essay writing, I try to read between the lines. I jotted down words that I don’t understand and looked for it in the dictionary. I had four types of dictionary beside me while I was reading. The Webster English dictionary, Dictionary of synonyms and antonyms, a pocket dictionary which was always in my pocket during college years and then the English-Tagalog dictionary.
It took me hours to finish reading a short story because the searching for meaning of words made me slower to read. I don’t flip the next page until I have understood all about the previous pages.
I wasn’t directly embarrassed by someone because of some obscurities with my writing but that remark from my classmate's father really hit me hard. I took it seriously, it was a weakness and I used that weakness to become at least better writer if not perfect. But for sure my classmate’s father doesn't want to embarrass me. Maybe he was just trying to let my classmate know that he should know what he writes.
So whenever someone gives you criticism about your writings don’t jump to the conclusion that they will humiliate you. Rather consider it a challenge. Review your work and correct the thing that you feel like there was an error that needs to be fixed.
People will always criticize us, whether constructive or destructive criticism. Either way don’t get mad right away. As I have always said in my previous post, people have different perceptions on anything. When we write we don’t expect people should agree with us. It’s all about opinions and there are people that just look at things differently. Don’t get carried away.
Thanks for reading. Ciao!
