Multiple Implementations and Cooperation in Bitcoin Cash Bitcoin ABC develops the leading full node software for Bitcoin Cash, which is used to produce more than 95% of all BCH blocks ever. As such, we sometimes are asked our position on having multiple full node software implementations in the Bitcoin Cash ecosystem. Bitcoin ABC very much welcomes new developers and full node implementations to Bitcoin Cash. We would like to coordinate and cooperate in an open and collaborative process. Multiple BCH full node implementations is ultimately good for Bitcoin Cash. The Major Proponent In fact, Bitcoin ABC has been the major proponent of Bitcoin Cash’s multiple implementations model. Bitcoin ABC chose a name that purposefully differentiates itself from Bitcoin Cash. This is important to separate one particular implementation from the protocol as a whole. It required more work but it helped create an environment where other nodes can thrive. Bitcoin ABC participated in a meeting in London with other implementations soon after the 2017 fork to ensure that we can have a common roadmap to work towards.  Bitcoin ABC participates in regular developer meetings inclusive of other full node implementations so that matters of consensus and other policies can be agreed upon.  Bitcoin ABC has created many ad hoc workgroups on various topics to facilitate coordination between different developers and teams. Bitcoin ABC, until recently, was the primary team writing Bitcoin Cash specifications for the longest time - until the recent formal specification effort, which we are happy to see moving forward. https://news.bitcoin.com/devs-discuss-formal-specification-project-for-bitcoin-cash/ Bitcoin ABC has taken many steps to ensure that Bitcoin Cash can accommodate multiple, thriving full node implementations. *“I can say that ABC has helped out BCHD whenever we had questions or were working on protocol upgrades. The experience with the ABC team in this regard has been excellent and there is no doubt they value the work done by the BCHD developers.” - Josh Ellithorpe* *#* https://old.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/g2ff4h/fun_question_for_the_abc/fnlzn4 Competition or Cooperation? It is important however to understand the proper roles of competition and cooperation with respect to full node implementations.  Should Bitcoin Cash full node projects engage in some kind of ruthless cutthroat competition? If yes, then the steps Bitcoin ABC has taken, noted above, would be irrational. You would expect Bitcoin ABC to instead attempt to crush the competition. The reality is that BCH full node implementations must cooperate on network policies and consensus rules. Competition best happens between chains, not within. Network Predictability is Good Take the example of zero-conf transactions. The term “zero-conf” or “0-conf”, refers to transactions that have yet to be included in a block, i.e., have zero confirmations so far.  Zero-conf transactions can be subject to some risks, such as double-spending and other attacks, if network policies across all, or almost all, miners are not in sync. If there is intra-network competition, meaning ruthless cutthroat competition among BCH implementations, then it can lead to inconsistent network policies. These inconsistent policies would result in the destruction of value for all users, as hostile actors leveraged our disagreements to attack us, particularly through double-spend attempts made possible by our inconsistencies. Consistent network policies also increase miner efficiency and lower the miners’ risk of falling out of consensus. Network predictability is good, and that is achieved through intra-network cooperation. Not competition. If we can agree on intra-network cooperation, then no winners need be declared, and there is room for multiple implementations in a non-zero-sum game. No winner means everyone wins. The Need for a Winner If however there has to be intra-network competition, then there has to be a winner. The end result is further centralization of the network in the hands of the leading implementation. The need to identify a winner means the competing implementations need to spend time and other resources on an internecine struggle that benefits no one but those who seek to capture Bitcoin Cash or hamper its growth. The constant drain on resources from such an ongoing fight constitutes a net negative for BCH and reduces the resources available for it to compete with other coins.  Multiple implementations is great. It is only the idea that these implementations must compete at the protocol and policy level that is harmful to the BCH ecosystem as a whole. Two Different Ideas It is critical to separate two ideas here that sound similar but indeed are quite different. Multiple Bitcoin Cash implementations are good. Bitcoin Cash implementations must fight to see who wins. We can all support no. 1. It is inherently beneficial for Bitcoin Cash. No. 2, however, leads to a struggle to see who will control the protocol. This is an inherently destructive process. We spend time fighting each other instead of building Bitcoin Cash so we can compete with other coins and flippen Bitcoin Core BTC.  Bitcoin ABC supports no.1. We oppose no. 2. Until we gain clarity on this, BCH will remain stuck in limbos, not being able to execute on its roadmap in a way that is compatible with its ambitions of becoming global money — possibly becoming irrelevant in the process or simply losing years of adoption. The Roadmap Bitcoin Cash is about achieving the Bitcoin Cash roadmap, which most major BCH players participated in creating. We want to create P2P electronic cash to serve billions of daily users. We have a plan to make this happen. https://www.bitcoincash.org/roadmap.html We must execute on this plan. Debating it endlessly will not get us there.  Debate may be intellectually stimulating, but at the end of the day nothing gets done unless we stop debating and start working. This does not mean there should be no debate, it simply means that we most focus on making forward progress. Disagree with the roadmap if you please.  If you think another plan is better, then please execute it on its own coin. If you think feature-rich smart contracts are the thing, for instance, then join the ETH community. BCH made the choice to have more limited smart contract features so that it can have an architecture that scales better. If you think that BCH needs to experiment with governance mechanisms by making decisions via X or Y, then try Tezos or a similar coin. BCH is about P2P electronic cash. It already has a roadmap. There is nothing wrong with any of these ideas. In fact, they are  important ideas that demand rigorous exploration. But they are not part of Bitcoin Cash. The purpose of BCH is to become P2P electronic cash by creating a scalable blockchain with fast confirmation times using pre-consensus techniques. If we want to spend more time debating matters which are already settled; if we want to talk about doing rather than just doing; if we want to foment one rebellion after another; then Bitcoin Cash will continue in its current limbo. Other coins will keep moving forward while we lag behind. Someone else will flippen BTC. The Bitcoin Cash project will fail. We must execute on the Bitcoin Cash roadmap now and without further delay. Constant Improvement Bitcoin ABC aims to constantly improve. We know some people want to make this competitive. We don't see it that way. We just aim to do better today than we did yesterday in the quest for achieving our vision and realizing our values. That said, Bitcoin ABC is the best implementation available right now, and miners have been choosing it. This is why it is important that ABC be funded now. This is why we are inviting those who want to scale Bitcoin Cash to billions of daily users to donate to our fundraiser at fund.bitcoinabc.org. https://fund.bitcoinabc.org/. Ideally, there will be more production-ready implementations in the future.  ABC is focused on building the best software it can, providing value to BCH businesses and users, and on advancing the roadmap. We are happy to cooperate with other node implementations in advancing these goals. We have big challenges ahead to gain mainstream adoption, and minimal resources to focus on them. How to Participate in the Upgrade Testnet **Written by**: Antony Zegers https://twitter.com/AntonyZegers Bitcoin ABC has a policy to “deploy network consensus changes in a careful manner, well ahead of time”, as stated in a **recent article**. The primary reason this is done is so that businesses and other BCH ecosystem participants have plenty of time to prepare for the upgrade. It allows them to roll out and deploy the update node software in an organized and deliberate manner. https://medium.com/bitcoin-abc/ifp-questions-and-answers-94b76dae2503 Helping Businesses Prepare One of the ways that Bitcoin Cash businesses and users may wish to prepare for network upgrades, is to test out upcoming features. To facilitate this, the Bitcoin ABC team has a practice of organizing an “**upgrade testnet**” prior to each scheduled network upgrade. These testnets have also been by volunteer contributors, such as **Imaginary Username** who ran the primary infrastructure for these testnets for the May and November 2019 upgrades. And there has also been corporate support, such as prior to those upgrades, early in the history of BCH, when Bitprim helped with testnet infrastructure. https://github.com/bitcoincashorg/bitcoincash.org/blob/master/workgroups/wg-testing/2020-05-15_upgrade_testnet.md https://twitter.com/im_uname Running a testnet with the upgrade activated early allows businesses to use it as an early testbed for the upcoming features. For example, Tobias Ruck of **be.cash** has been using the upgrade testnet to run new versions of his smart contract script using the upcoming **OP_REVERSEBYTES** opcode. Using the upgrade testnet in this manner allows development using new features to proceed more rapidly than it would if it were necessary to wait until the actual upgrade. https://be.cash/ https://www.bitcoincash.org/spec/2020-05-15-op_reversebytes.html Projects have also used the past upgrade testnets simply to test that they could continue functioning unchanged. For instance, wallets could test that changes to consensus rules do not affect their ability to function normally. Testing the Node A second goal of the upgrade testnet is to test the node software itself. For this purpose, we run activation tests, where various tests are performed, such as testing the validity of transactions before and after activation. We also conduct various other tests, such as doing blockchain reorganizations through the activation point. For example, for the current upgrade test, we broadcast transactions containing the OP_REVERSEBYTES opcode before and after the activation. The tests confirmed that prior to upgrade activation, the transactions are rejected with the correct error code (upgrade-conditional-script-failure (Opcode missing or not understood) (code 16) (code -26)), and after activation they are accepted. Bitcoin ABC typically does activation tests around the time the upgrade release is made, which was around Feb 15th this time around. We also conducted an activation test on April 15th to test Bitcoin Unlimited’s release, and we did a pre-release test today (April 28th, 2020) for BCHD. **This OP_REVERSE containing transaction** was broadcast by a BCHD node during today’s test. http://bitcoincash.gq:3002/tx/0710eff806e976917697a7f137d6c9245fd9fe40127b2cead94d846e89c2c5c7 Get Involved Testing out the node behavior during activation tests is an area where people can get involved and help out. We have set up the infrastructure to mine upgraded blocks, so it’s a good opportunity for people to **connect to that network** and test things out. For instance, **Tobias Ruck** stepped up to create the transactions needed to test OP_REVERSEBYTES. https://github.com/bitcoincashorg/bitcoincash.org/blob/master/workgroups/wg-testing/2020-05-15_upgrade_testnet.md https://twitter.com/TobiasRuck Another change in the coming upgrade is a change to the way signature operations are accounted for, called **SigChecks**. This will remove the old “sigops” rules, and replace them with new limits on the actual number of sigops executed in scripts. There are per-block and per-transaction limits, as well as an input density limit. For someone who is interested, it would be a good project to construct transactions, and even blocks that violate the old sigops rules, but fit within the new rules, and vice versa. There are many cases to be tested, and this is something we have not had the time or resources to do yet. So if anyone is interested, feel free to reach out! The **testing workgroup** would be a good place to start. https://www.bitcoincash.org/spec/2020-05-15-sigchecks.html https://t.me/joinchat/DUeWWkYZbVMjvwMTRFlRhw Building We are busy building, working towards improving Bitcoin Cash and helping ensure smooth upgrades. Participation in the Upgrade Testnet from other node projects and builders in the BCH ecosystem is a great way to help ensure that upgrades are safe and uneventful. So please join us in testing out the network upgrades, and building to grow Bitcoin Cash into the best money the world has ever seen. How You Can Contribute to Bitcoin ABC The goal of Bitcoin ABC is to build the software infrastructure needed for Bitcoin Cash to be successful.  We are “building the roads” for Bitcoin Cash.  We are building the platform for potentially tens of thousands of new Bitcoin Cash businesses as we scale Bitcoin Cash to billions of daily users. How can you contribute? Anyone can discover development priorities and contribute at reviews.bitcoinabc.org/maniphest. https://reviews.bitcoinabc.org/maniphest/. Here is a complete and public guide on how to contribute to Bitcoin Cash protocol development available in the Bitcoin ABC GitHub: https://github.com/Bitcoin-ABC/bitcoin-abc/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md First Steps New developers can create an account on reviews.bitcoinabc.org and immediately get started. Specific skill sets are helpful but new people with varied skill sets are very much welcome. https://reviews.bitcoinabc.org Due to the small size of the Bitcoin ABC team and our current lack of sufficient resources, we have to establish clear priorities. We simply do not have much time available to educate inexperienced or untrained developers, or to bring them up to speed on the Bitcoin ABC codebase. If we invest too much time into onboarding new people, there is the risk of creating a net-negative result. This is because time spent supporting those who cannot make significant and consistent ongoing contributions is time we are not spending improving the Bitcoin ABC codebase and achieving the Bitcoin Cash roadmap.  https://www.bitcoincash.org/roadmap.html And the time of qualified developers is a finite resource. So please be patient, and understand that although help is welcome and encouraged, sometimes the current developers may not have a lot of time to devote to helping onboard new people. When the team grows and more people are available to share this load, it will become easier to manage this. This requires steady and ongoing funding. What is the path of a new Bitcoin ABC developer/contributor? A new developer can contact us, expressing an interest via social media (Facebook or Twitter), Telegram or email. However, this step is entirely unnecessary. Developers can skip straight to step 2 if you so desire. https://www.facebook.com/bitcoinabc.org/ https://twitter.com/bitcoin_abc https://t.me/abcsocialgroup Join reviews.bitcoinabc.org (our Phabricator instance). https://reviews.bitcoinabc.org Select an item to work on, likely from reviews.bitcoinabc.org/maniphest. https://reviews.bitcoinabc.org/maniphest/. Create some code and submit it back via our Phabricator instance. The code is discussed by the team, and changes can be made. Developers signal their approval and it may be accepted. Once code review is complete, Arcanist (Phabricator tooling) is used to push changes. Team members self-select tasks based on expertise, interest, direction from Amaury and expressed priority level of the tasks. Amaury and Antony also provide guidance and direction where needed. Decision-Making Process We hold discussions in our Slack, Telegram and private communication channels with multiple individuals, teams and the representatives of entities in the Bitcoin Cash ecosystem. Technical decision-making usually happens at reviews.bitcoinabc.org. https://reviews.bitcoinabc.org/ https://reviews.bitcoinabc.org. Bitcoin ABC is focused on Bitcoin Cash protocol development that is sustainable. Therefore, we establish priorities around this that greatly inform our decision-making processes, taking into account the resources available to us.  For example, we generally resist short-term fixes that create new technical debt and prefer to focus on solutions that set us up for ongoing success in scaling to realize the P2P electronic cash vision. When needed, our Lead Developer Amaury Séchet is the final decision-maker. @Bitcoin_ABC

IFP Questions and Answers The health of the Bitcoin Cash network is central to the Bitcoin ABC mission. We take very seriously our responsibility to ensure the safety and security of the BCH network. It is for this reason that we deploy network consensus changes in a careful manner, well ahead of time. This allows Bitcoin Cash businesses and other projects time to upgrade and test the new version before going into production. **The Infrastructure Funding Plan** The **Infrastructure Funding Plan** (IFP) is a project that aims to direct a percentage of Bitcoin Cash block rewards from all BCH blocks produced for a term of 6 months to invest in BCH software and commons, including the development of the Bitcoin ABC BCH full node software, which has produced almost all BCH blocks ever. https://www.bitcoinabc.org/2020-02-15-miner-fund/ Recently, we have received questions via reddit.com/r/btc about whether Bitcoin ABC will “remove the IFP” from its software. **"Removing the IFP" at this time Would be Reckless** "Removing the IFP" would mean releasing a version of the Bitcoin ABC full node software with different consensus rules than Bitcoin ABC versions 0.21.0, 0.21.1, 0.21.2, 0.21.3 and 0.21.4. To make such a change at this time, after users have already started upgrading for the 15 May 2020 network upgrade, would be reckless. Such a change would expose Bitcoin Cash businesses, users and the network to the risk of a chain split for no compelling reason. Since we cannot retroactively recall prior releases, it is likely that a portion of users will continue to run versions 0.21.0 through 0.21.4. If Bitcoin ABC released a new “IFP-removed” version, and the IFP were to activate, then a chain split could result.  This risk also applies to anyone running any node software that doesn't implement the IFP. If the IFP does not activate, then an “IFP-removed” version would behave no differently than other versions, so there would be no compelling reason for it. Further, it is a terrible idea, and would be a bad precedent, to make technical decisions about production software based on what point of view can muster the most noise on social media. **Requested by BCH Miners** The bottom line is that the IFP was **requested and set in motion** by BCH miners who likely control enough hashrate to enforce the plan, if they so choose. https://medium.com/@jiangzhuoer/infrastructure-funding-plan-for-bitcoin-cash-131fdcd2412e The initial community reaction rapidly reached a "cautiously optimistic" consensus. Some parties were opposed to the very concept of miner funding. Others were supportive of the intent of the plan, but had issues with different details of how it would be implemented. Some individuals flipped their positions from being in favor of, to being against, the IFP. As a result of **community feedback**, the original IFP plan was modified to be activated by a BIP 9 miner vote. This is the process that is taking place right now. https://read.cash/@Jiang_Zhuoer_BTC.TOP_CEO/bch-miner-donation-plan-update-0cf20809 **Wheels in Motion** The wheels were already in motion. Bitcoin ABC has a predetermined release schedule precisely to create predictability around Bitcoin Cash for BCH businesses. Releasing a version with different consensus rules in the middle of an upgrade cycle would constitute an unnecessary risk. To push such a snap decision out to exchanges, mining pools and other businesses, would force an emergency upgrade on them. This would produce messy results, as some upgrade and some may not. This could damage the Bitcoin Cash network, and harm the reputation of BCH with those businesses. In order to protect the integrity of the Bitcoin Cash network, we must not make snap decisions based on proof of reddit.  So those wheels continue to turn. **Miner Vote** The IFP is being submitted to a miner vote.  As a project, Bitcoin ABC believes that stable funding of Bitcoin Cash software infrastructure is vital to the success of the project. While we recognize that some aspects of this plan have been controversial, we believe that overall the benefits of the plan create the potential for a very exciting future in which Bitcoin Cash can grow and compete, and can reach its goal of becoming the best money the world has ever seen. To try and back that out now sets a dangerous precedent and could cause more damage than even the posited worst-case IFP voting scenarios. **What if the IFP activates?** It can sometimes be appropriate to issue emergency updates to node software in order to correct a fatal flaw or major bug. But the IFP does not fall into this category, to the contrary it is actually a very attractive feature for Bitcoin Cash in many ways. **Precedent:** Self funding mechanisms exist for almost all top cryptocurrencies (for example ETH started with an ICO and held lots of initial coins), and have been greatly successful in funding development. An example of an IFP-like self-funding coin is ZCash. After much constructive discussion in its community, ZCash decided overwhelmingly to renew their miner funding mechanism. The Electric Coin Company has been very successful in using those funds to advance the state of research in the areas of cutting-edge cryptography relevant to ZCash. **Efficient:** One of the nice features of the IFP is that it would have an almost negligible impact on miners of Bitcoin Cash. It would result in lowering SHA256 miner revenues by 0.15% - one tenth of one percent. Considering the cryptocurrency markets fluctuate by many multiples of this amount within hours, this is a very small impact. The effect on development funding, meanwhile, would be massive, enabling the buildout of solid infrastructure for Bitcoin Cash to grow and compete. **Aligned with Principles:** The IFP is consistent with Bitcoin Cash’s properties of being sound money. It does not touch the inflation schedule or alter the scarcity of BCH. Although some argue that it reduces the security of the network by lowering the relative hash rate of BCH compared to BTC, it would also increase the security of the network against bugs and software vulnerabilities by enabling development to be properly funded. So,it seems likely that it would actually increase the security of the Bitcoin Cash network, all things considered. **Aligned Incentives:** One of the nice characteristics of the IFP as a development funding solution is that it does a good job **aligning the incentives** of Bitcoin Cash developer teams with the interests of the network as a whole. https://overcast.fm/+Qippm2RIc/35:05 Bitcoin ABC provides its full node software under the MIT open-source license to miners. The miners use the software to produce revenue in the form of the block reward, which they receive when they successfully produce Bitcoin Cash blocks. When protocol developers also make their living from those same block rewards, it aligns incentives. If the network as a whole builds, grows and does well, there will be more demand for Bitcoin Cash. This increased demand can be expected over time to be reflected in the value of the same Bitcoin Cash paid to developer groups from the block reward. Conversely, if the developer teams are not effective, miners can change payouts or full node software, or even end the IFP entirely, if they so choose. **Conclusion** The goal of Bitcoin ABC is to make Bitcoin Cash a globally competitive P2P electronic cash system. To accomplish this goal will require a lot of work, including significant investment in the infrastructure so that it can provide a solid foundation for Bitcoin Cash products and services, and be able to handle massive growth.  Bitcoin Cash faces significant competition in the cryptocurrency space, and those competitors are not sitting still. To the contrary, they are investing massive sums into development. Bitcoin Cash is faced with an existential question: grow or die. For these reasons, we see the IFP as an attractive option to provide a sustainable source of funding in order to meet those goals. The original IFP proposal was modified, based on community feedback, to be activated by BIP 9 miner activation. The miners who were interested in the IFP stated that they would use this activation mechanism responsibly to either activate the IFP, or not, according to their judgement of the situation.  At this time, the most responsible course of action for Bitcoin ABC is to let this miner voting process play out without interference. **Questions and Answers** Here are some questions we have received, and their answers. **What if a malicious miner activates the IFP?** To activate the IFP requires that a miner can maintain greater than 66% of the BCH hashrate for 2 full weeks. So the bar to activate the IFP is actually higher than what would be needed for a miner to do things much much worse than anything anyone has posited the IFP could do.  If some miner decides to use a large amount of hash to attack BCH, that has nothing to do with the IFP. It is simply the nature of the security model we have with Nakamoto consensus. It seems unlikely that a malicious miner would be willing to spend that much money simply to cause more controversy on r/btc. And if they do, it hardly seems to be worse than actually being able to fund BCH protocol development, and finally develop BCH as P2P electronic cash. This scenario also illustrates why it would be foolhardy to release a version of Bitcoin ABC with the IFP removed. In such a situation, a “rogue activation” would actually cause a BCH network split between miners running Bitcoin ABC versions 0.21.4 and below on the one hand, and those running the “IFP-removed” version on the other. **Will the IFP cause a fork?** The Bitcoin ABC full node software is used by almost all miners, therefore this is not expected. **The community is unanimously against the IFP.** Decisions are made in Bitcoin by individuals taking actions based on their preferences and self-interest, not by permitting those who are loudest on social media to dictate courses of action for everyone else. We know that some people on social media are not happy about the IFP but this does not mean everyone is against it. **The IFP is not on the Bitcoin Cash roadmap.** The IFP may not formally be on the **roadmap**, but a miner funding mechanism has been a long-standing feature request from major players in the Bitcoin Cash ecosystem. See for example this May 2018 article from Bitcoin.com entitled “**BCH Miners Discuss Funding Development With a Fraction of Block Rewards**”.  https://www.bitcoincash.org/roadmap.html https://news.bitcoin.com/bch-miners-discuss-funding-development-with-a-fraction-of-block-rewards/ Over the years various proposals have been attempted, and the current incarnation of the IFP represents a continuation of those efforts to come up with stable infrastructure funding for Bitcoin Cash. The bottom line is that funding is implicit in the roadmap. A roadmap without funding is nothing more than a nice idea, wish or dream. It only becomes a serious, executable plan when we apportion the resources necessary to make it happen. After 2.5 years, the time has come for us to apportion those resources if we wish to see Bitcoin Cash remain relevant and realize the vision of P2P electronic cash for the world. **The IFP is not in the business plan.** Actually it is on **page 18**. https://fund.bitcoinabc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Bitcoin-ABC-Business-Plan-2020-r7dot1.pdf **The Infrastructure Funding Plan (IFP).** If all else fails, miners may be incentivized to implement an infrastructure funding plan that involves a mandatory percentage-based contribution of the Bitcoin Cash block reward to Bitcoin Cash development teams. **You just need to improve the IFP like this.** There are many variations possible for an IFP-type miner funding mechanism. Part of the challenge with **previous efforts** was that it is difficult for a large group to come to consensus in all the details of how it is to be implemented. For this reason, an imperfect but simple plan may be better than a plan that is “better” in one person’s opinion, while being more complicated. https://news.bitcoin.com/bch-miners-discuss-funding-development-with-a-fraction-of-block-rewards/ It should also be noted that the **original plan** was actually modified based on some of the **feedback** received to arrive at the current implemented version. https://medium.com/@jiangzhuoer/infrastructure-funding-plan-for-bitcoin-cash-131fdcd2412e https://read.cash/@Jiang_Zhuoer_BTC.TOP_CEO/bch-miner-donation-plan-update-0cf20809 If you would like to improve the IFP, or any other aspect of the Bitcoin ABC full node software, we welcome patches at **reviews.bitcoinabc.org**. Here are full details on how to start contributing to Bitcoin Cash protocol development with Bitcoin ABC: **https://github.com/Bitcoin-ABC/bitcoin-abc/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md**. https://reviews.bitcoinabc.org/ **What’s to stop the IFP from continuing forever?** Given that Bitcoin ABC upgrades the network every 6 months via hard fork, it is not possible for the current IFP to continue more than a maximum of 6 months. Further, the consortium of miners that came together to propose the IFP is inherently unstable. That said, if the IFP turns out to be successful, leads to major improvements to Bitcoin Cash, and is seen as a wise investment in the project, then there is no reason why it should not continue for longer than six months. @Bitcoin_ABC

How to Fund Bitcoin Cash Protocol Development Bitcoin ABC is focused on scaling Bitcoin Cash to serve the payments needs of billions of daily users. We aim to change civilization as we know it, and materially empower the world with greater liberty and prosperity. Bitcoin ABC needs funding right now to continue the development of Bitcoin Cash towards goals that aim to improve miners’ efficiency and profitability and can enable many other Bitcoin Cash business plans. Current Revenue Streams Bitcoin ABC’s full node software is open source, so we don’t have customer contracts. That said, billions of dollars of value has been created by Bitcoin ABC through our creation of Bitcoin Cash and through the block rewards granted to the creators of more than 52,000 BCH blocks per year. More than 95% of all Bitcoin Cash blocks are, and have been, mined with Bitcoin ABC’s Bitcoin Cash full node software. Bitcoin ABC revenue streams include the following. **Corporate Sponsorships**. We are offering sponsorships to Bitcoin Cash miners and businesses. **Community Donations**. Such as the Coin Dance and 2019 Bitcoin Cash Protocol Development fundraisers, as well as direct donations via the bitcoinabc.org website. https://www.bitcoinabc.org/ We are carrying out a fundraiser during the month of Apr 2020 at fund.bitcoinabc.org that includes these options. https://fund.bitcoinabc.org/ Potential Future Streams Some ideas Bitcoin ABC might explore for the future include the following. **Support Agreements**. Bitcoin ABC might sell support agreements to miners and businesses. These would serve as a kind of insurance policy for Bitcoin Cash businesses. The support agreements could be tiered and/or pay-per-incident. Emergency support could be provided immediately for those willing to pay the most. Support might be apportioned based on a points scheme, such as this one https://admin.phacility.com/book/phacility/article/mana/. **Linux Foundation Model**. Through sponsorships, development-for-hire, training, events and more, Bitcoin ABC might employ a small team to coordinate forward progress for the Bitcoin Cash protocol while harmonizing the sometimes conflicting interests of competitors in the space. **Pay-to-Build Buckets**. This would come under the community donations heading and might enable donors to contribute towards specific roadmap milestones. It’s important to keep in mind that BCH protocol development priorities have a logic all their own, and can not always be changed by popular vote. Some things are best done before others to save time and money, and avoid unexpected problems. **The Bitcoin ABC Store**. Bitcoin ABC might sell swag online. **Crowdfunding**. For example via OpenCollective, LiberaPay, “Buy Me a Coffee” or Patreon. It is important to note that for Bitcoin ABC to interact with fiat payments represents a legal and compliance burden that may cost more than it is worth. **Bounties, Grants & Awards**. We are keeping our eyes out for any such opportunities. We might develop a formal, legal process to offer Bitcoin ABC a bounty. **Dual Licensing / Open-Core**. There is a possibility of requiring a license for commercial use and/or releasing a basic full node client but charging for add-ons, or otherwise modifying the Bitcoin ABC license. **The Infrastructure Funding Plan (IFP)**. If all else fails, miners may be incentivized to implement an infrastructure funding plan that involves a percentage-based contribution of the Bitcoin Cash block reward to Bitcoin Cash development teams. More on Patreon Even if the one-time and ongoing costs of receiving fiat payments are surmountable given sufficient funding for the already overworked team, the question remains: Is Patreon a sensible way to finance free and open-source software infrastructure development? Current research points to a clear and conclusive no. Successful Patreons for software development are few and far between. The most successful appears to be for VueJS, which is very frontend (basically the opposite of Bitcoin ABC's protocol development), and produces about USD$200,000 per year on the high end after years of promotion. Patreon for protocol development, for building software infrastructure, is just not a strategy that seems to align with the reality in evidence from the experiences of other free and open-source software projects. Bitcoin ABC is definitely keeping it in mind for the future though. Developing Ways to Fund Development It is important to note that, at this time, there are minimal funds and developer time available to develop additional revenue streams. Bitcoin ABC aims to innovate in this area in the future, once initial Bitcoin Cash infrastructure development needs are on a steady foundation. Also, any activity to raise funds that takes developers away from developing directly on Bitcoin Cash ultimately needs to be judged on a strict cost-benefit ratio, since the mission of Bitcoin ABC is to develop the Bitcoin Cash protocol. We need to remain focused on that mission.  Donations, or altruism, is a key revenue source we aim to cultivate and support. But it is important to recognize that altruism is not a solid foundation on which to build censorship-resistant P2P value transfer for the world. Bitcoin ABC remains committed to only accepting funds with conditions that are aligned with the best interests of Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin ABC. @Bitcoin_ABC

Why Bitcoin ABC Needs Your Support Now Bitcoin ABC is the team behind the leading full node implementation of the Bitcoin Cash protocol. Bitcoin ABC led the fork that created Bitcoin Cash, and has maintained the leading Bitcoin Cash implementation for 2.5 years. Bitcoin ABC has an outstanding track record of doing things that provide value. For 2.5 years, we have been doing things right, on time and under budget. Scaling Now Bitcoin ABC is focused on scaling Bitcoin Cash to serve the payments needs of billions of daily users. Here is why. Current Bitcoin ABC funding will be exhausted on 30 Jun 2020. As Bitcoin Cash usage grows, every issue that is minor today becomes serious tomorrow. Waiting only promises to sully the reputation of Bitcoin Cash when users try it out and do not encounter a reliable experience. This is a direct threat to the Bitcoin Cash mission of becoming censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for the world. The more we delay resolving the challenge of funding Bitcoin ABC, the more expensive it will get, the more polarized the community will become and the more extreme will be the proposals to resolve it. Nothing good comes from waiting. As a top-5 coin in terms of market capitalization, there is an enormous amount of value on the line with Bitcoin Cash. We must keep the Bitcoin ABC codebase up to date with other developments in order to safeguard the value and market position of Bitcoin Cash. Currently 90% of Bitcoin ABC developer time goes into maintenance. New features barely register in the workload. If we want to scale, we need to improve this ratio. Funding is required to hire the engineering workforce we need to make this happen. The work Bitcoin ABC has completed so far — on backports, cleaning up technical debt, implementing automated testing infrastructure and more — has us well-positioned now to make rapid progress on new features and significant improvements to the Bitcoin Cash protocol. Without resources, progress will halt and Bitcoin Cash will not be able to compete with other cryptocurrencies that are innovating and scaling. Code rot will become a serious threat. What is a minor problem today, becomes a huge issue tomorrow. Without significant funding, the temptation to prioritize short-term fixes over foundational changes, and the corresponding technical debt, becomes more threatening. We have the potential to grow the Bitcoin Cash userbase radically, particularly in the developing world, but only if protocol development is sustainably funded to achieve important roadmap goals. @Bitcoin_ABC

Bitcoin ABC: Problems and Solutions Bitcoin ABC is working on scaling Bitcoin Cash to handle the payments needs of billions of daily users and serve Bitcoin Cash businesses better. To that end, we offer these 6 problems that Bitcoin ABC provides solutions for. 1. Bitcoin Cash miners need a stable full node software for mining. Bitcoin ABC solves this through detailed work that optimizes the Bitcoin ABC full node software for use in mining, with greater stability and less resource usage than other options. The team and the software have been battle-hardened from years as the primary node software used in production for mining BCH. 2. Bitcoin Cash needs to grow in order to achieve the P2P electronic cash vision. Bitcoin Cash needs to grow. The alternative is further stagnation and the loss of initiative to other, funded coins. Bitcoin ABC is fully committed to a scaling **roadmap** that gets us to 10,000 or more transactions per second (TPS). https://www.bitcoincash.org/roadmap.html 3. The Bitcoin Cash mempool has inherent limits that are keeping us from scaling. We have prioritized a **Mempool Overhaul project** that will materially resolve this important challenge and set the stage for Bitcoin Cash to grow for decades to come. https://read.cash/@Bitcoin_ABC/what-is-bitcoin-abcs-mempool-overhaul-project-32b268e7 4. Bitcoin Cash needs to come out of Bitcoin Core’s shadow and take leadership of the P2P electronic cash vision. Bitcoin Core, from which Bitcoin ABC draws a lot of code and backports, is not developing the P2P electronic cash vision. Bitcoin ABC is. As long as we rely on Bitcoin Core backports to develop Bitcoin Cash, we can not take technical leadership and optimize Bitcoin Cash for global daily use by billions of people. Bitcoin ABC solves this, with the **Take Code Ownership project**, which will allow Bitcoin Cash to step out of the shadow of Bitcoin Core, and truly take the lead on bringing peer-to-peer electronic cash to the world. https://read.cash/@Bitcoin_ABC/what-is-bitcoin-abcs-take-code-ownership-project-79354f13 5. The context in which Bitcoin Cash operates is always changing, leading to code rot challenges. Bitcoin ABC keeps its Bitcoin Cash full node software up to date with changing hardware, dependent libraries, user trends and much more, be it related to SSD adoption, increasing internet speeds, new bottlenecks, changing tradeoffs, new CPU architectures and other emerging challenges. The Bitcoin ABC project maintains a methodical release cycle, with releases every two weeks. This predictable release cadence makes it easier to always run the latest release, which is the safest practice for Bitcoin ABC users 6. Emergencies, such as security vulnerabilities happen. Attackers get smarter by the day. The Bitcoin ABC development team responds 24/7/365 to new threats, and has a proven track record of responding effectively to problems. The Bitcoin ABC development team also keeps the software fresh with ongoing code cleanups, bug fixes, and updates to minimize the risk of vulnerabilities. Who is Bitcoin ABC Bitcoin ABC is the team behind the leading full node implementation of the Bitcoin Cash protocol. Bitcoin ABC led the BCH fork and has maintained Bitcoin Cash for 2.5 years. Bitcoin ABC has an outstanding track record of doing things that provide value. For 2.5 years, we have been doing things right, on time and under budget. Bitcoin ABC is focused on scaling Bitcoin Cash to serve the payments needs of billions of daily users. We aim to change civilization as we know it, and materially empower the world with greater liberty and prosperity. Key Team Members Here are some key members of the team. There are more, but some wish to maintain a low profile. If Bitcoin ABC is adequately funded for 2020-2021, we will be looking to sustainably and responsibly staff up on engineers. **Amaury Séchet** founded and leads Bitcoin ABC. He stood up and took responsibility to make the Bitcoin Cash fork from Bitcoin Core happen. Mr. Séchet discovered Bitcoin in 2010 and got involved in 2011. Seeing Bitcoin failing to scale, he decided to take matters into his own hands and apply his experience in large-scale systems to Bitcoin. Mr. Séchet is formerly a software engineer at Facebook, LLVM committer and the main developer of the D compiler SDC. **Antony Zegers** is a protocol developer focused on Bitcoin Cash and a member of Bitcoin ABC. He participated in the creation of Bitcoin ABC and Bitcoin Cash starting in May 2017. Mr. Zegers holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Military College of Canada, and a Master’s, also in Electrical Engineering, from the University of Toronto. He formerly worked for Defence Research and Development Canada for twelve years doing Operational Research and Analysis. Mr. Zegers publishes articles and analysis on economic and technical aspects of cryptocurrency, under the online handle "Mengerian". He has been a Bitcoin enthusiast since 2012.  **Jason B. Cox** is a software engineer who got inspired by the Bitcoin Cash fork and began contributing to Bitcoin ABC shortly afterwards. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Los Angeles.  Mr. Cox formerly worked as a software engineer at LinkedIn building scalable software systems to serve a half-billion user base, and he strives to bring that same level of engineering focus to Bitcoin Cash. **Other Developers**. The Bitcoin ABC team also includes a handful of full-time software engineers of various backgrounds, including scaling multi-million dollar systems at well-known companies. These are the people that keep the Bitcoin ABC machine well-oiled and running on time. Many of them prefer to keep a low-profile so they can focus on their critical work. **George Donnelly** is Bitcoin ABC’s Business Development Manager. He is a digital marketing professional, serial entrepreneur, Unix/Linux systems administrator, science fiction author and blogger focused on the P2P electronic cash vision for the developing world, in particular Latin America. He is a fluent Spanish speaker and first discovered Bitcoin in 2011. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Chicago. @Bitcoin_ABC

Why Businesses Need Bitcoin ABC Bitcoin Cash businesses invest their resources to build applications and other software to serve customers and, eventually, make profits.  Bitcoin Cash businesses are typically built on top of a Bitcoin Cash full node software, such as Bitcoin ABC’s. Every Bitcoin Cash application depends on having reliable full node software, software that is being proactively and continuously maintained by a group of dedicated professionals that have a proven track record. Know the Risks Businesses that choose to build on a Bitcoin Cash full node software that is backed by one person or a small, volunteer team are taking a great risk. What if that key person moves on to another project or another job? What if they experience a life event that makes it impossible to continue their work? Open-source projects can of course be continued by other developers. But the fact is that many such projects are simply abandoned and discontinued.  This leaves you, the business owner or operator, with a significant challenge. Now, you have to redesign your own software to work with another project’s Bitcoin Cash full node software. If this happens at the wrong moment, or just too late along your launch runway, the effect on your project could very well be devastating. Are you Prepared Are you prepared to develop and maintain the Bitcoin Cash full node software yourself, either directly or by hiring developers? If not, or if such a result would eat through your own precious resources that you need to launch your own product, then it is wise to support a professional Bitcoin Cash full node software team that has a consistent track record of producing high-quality work.  From a business perspective, spending a small portion of your budget to support the infrastructure your business relies on is similar to purchasing insurance. It helps protect your business. In addition, you can also reap other benefits such as on-call technical support, and marketing perks. @Bitcoin_ABC

Future Projects for Bitcoin Cash Bitcoin ABC is working on scaling Bitcoin Cash to handle the payments needs of billions of daily users. To that end, we made a roadmap for 2020-2022. https://read.cash/@Bitcoin_ABC/the-bitcoin-abc-2020-2022-strategy-roadmap-d14b08f4 The following projects are also high on Bitcoin ABC’s priority list, but can not yet be timelined, given the current resources available to us. **Reference Indexer**. An indexer is like a programmatic block explorer. All Bitcoin Cash businesses need an indexer in one form or another, for example for address indexing. Currently, indexing capabilities leave considerable room for improvement, as multiple groups are maintaining various “Bitcore patch” versions. We aim to create a reference indexer that won’t break as we continue developing Bitcoin ABC, thereby providing a major benefit to the ecosystem. **Mining Efficiency Improvements**. There is currently a lot of inefficiency in the mining process which is costing miners money and will only get worse as blocks get larger. For example, the block is created via the getblocktemplate RPC, and submitted back via the submitblock RPC when a miner solves the Proof of Work (PoW). Because of this, the block needs to be passed in full from the node to the mining software and then back, only to be revalidated again on the node. By improving efficiency here, we can improve miner profitability. **QUIC**. QUIC is a transport layer that augments and improves TCP-based applications through parallelization, with greater reliability than TCP-based solutions. The primary benefits of QUIC for Bitcoin Cash include the following. All traffic will be encrypted. Currently, all BCH network traffic is in the clear. All traffic will be authenticated. This is a prerequisite for Avalanche (see below). No "head of line blocking". Currently, messages need to be sent from one node to another in a sequential manner. This forces high-priority messages (such as the discovery of a new block) to wait for lower priority ones to be sent. With QUIC, it is possible to start sending the block right away, without having to wait for previous messages to be sent in full. **Avalanche Pre-Consensus**. Avalanche is a method of achieving pre-consensus that secures zero-conf transactions in 3 seconds or less. Avalanche operates in parallel with proof-of-work (PoW) Nakamoto Consensus, and complements it. It can also be useful in preventing post-consensus block reorganization attacks. Avalanche messages are easy to create and transmit by default in the clear. These characteristics represent a potential security issue, if left unresolved. Thus, a prerequisite for Avalanche is encrypted channels among nodes (which QUIC provides). **Staffing Growth**. Sustainably onboard  more developers and support staff for communications, administration, technical support, etc. With adequate funding in hand by 30 Apr 2020, and assuming the availability of qualified engineering talent, Bitcoin ABC can begin work immediately on the projects that will later enable us to address the above projects, and potentially others, further into the future. These are important projects that are key to providing a solid foundation for the building of the Bitcoin Cash businesses we need to achieve the Bitcoin Cash vision and roadmap. We can not address them today. But if Bitcoin ABC is adequately funded now, we may remain on track to address them within 2 short years. @Bitcoin_ABC

What is Bitcoin ABC's "Fix Block Time Oscillations Project"? Bitcoin ABC is working hard to scale Bitcoin Cash. As part of that, we recognize the need to reduce the block time oscillations that sometimes see 2-hour or longer gaps between Bitcoin Cash blocks. As a minority hash-rate chain sharing the same Proof of Work as Bitcoin Core (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH) requires a continuously-varying difficulty target to adjust to keep the mining hash rate balanced between the two chains. Currently, however, short-term profitability differences between mining on BTC vs BCH incentivize switch mining relative to steady mining, in effect rewarding the undesirable behavior. This results in hash rate oscillations on BCH. Balancing Tradeoffs Improving this situation will require careful study, as it involves balancing different tradeoffs. The solution could be to improve the Difficulty Adjustment Algorithm (DAA), as well as other methods to achieve the desired outcome. It is important that any analysis of DAA options start from a well-articulated problem statement, since simply **solving for one metric could worsen other problems, or even open security risks**. https://old.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/g0axm3/the_bitcoin_cash_difficulty_adjustment_algorithm/fn9z0qz/?context=3 We are looking forward to initiating careful, thoughtful research on this challenging technical problem, beginning 15 May 2020. With adequate funding in hand by 30 Apr 2020, and assuming the availability of qualified engineering talent, Bitcoin ABC aims to deliver a solution to the network in time for the 15 Nov 2020 network upgrade. @Bitcoin_ABC

Why Support Bitcoin ABC Bitcoin ABC is the pre-eminent Bitcoin Cash protocol development team. Without Bitcoin ABC, Bitcoin Cash does not work. The Bitcoin Cash ecosystem relies on the Bitcoin ABC full node software to continue producing almost all of the blocks, more than 95%. Bitcoin ABC has specific expertise that enables miners and other Bitcoin Cash businesses to save time and money through greater efficiency. Our expertise contributes to your profitability. We have a demonstrated track record of sticking to the project and following through on that commitment to Bitcoin Cash. We stand at the ready every day to counter the threats to Bitcoin Cash and ensure the network keeps running, doing the tedious backporting work and ensuring that, first and foremost, BCH survives. Other cryptocurrency projects are not waiting for Bitcoin Cash. If we don’t grow, the rest of the space will move ahead of us. Remedying this only becomes more expensive the longer we wait. Bitcoin ABC is the only Bitcoin Cash protocol development team proven ready and capable of assuming this challenge. Bitcoin ABC has already produced billions of dollars of value for ecosystem participants, and more than $1 billion in revenue for miners. The work Bitcoin ABC has completed so far — on backports, cleaning up technical debt, implementing automated testing infrastructure and more — has us well-positioned now to make rapid progress on new features and significant improvements to the Bitcoin Cash protocol. Bitcoin ABC produces 5-6 git commits per day, almost every day, with consistent biweekly releases, and has remained an effective team despite inadequate funding. With Bitcoin ABC, you get your Bitcoin Cash full node software direct from the team that is maintaining and developing it — the experts. Our incentive is to provide the best experience because we depend on trust to survive. We are focused on features that have the potential to grow Bitcoin Cash while also ensuring that our code runs efficiently and stably. Bitcoin ABC led the fork from Bitcoin Core, leading to the creation of Bitcoin Cash. Bitcoin ABC has maintained our leading full node software and the Bitcoin Cash network for 2.5 years on schedule and under budget. With Bitcoin ABC, there is no vendor lock-in. You can audit the code and you have the freedom to adjust the code to your specific needs. Ever-Vigilant The Bitcoin ABC full node software for Bitcoin Cash does not run in a vacuum. Dependencies, such as libraries (for example, OpenSSL and BerkeleyDB) and operating systems are constantly updated by their developers. Advances and changes in tools and technology, such as SSD storage, new CPU architectures (such as ARM), high-DPI displays, black-swan CPU side-channel leaks and ever-evolving attacker tactics present constant challenges. We must update our Bitcoin ABC full node software to keep up with these changes. We must be ever-vigilant. Standing still is not an option. We must run just to ensure Bitcoin Cash stays in place, and does not fall behind. Bitcoin ABC has been at the forefront of this hard work since the beginning of Bitcoin Cash. The alternative to supporting Bitcoin ABC is code rot, software that breaks, software that is hard to run, software that requires additional maintenance and the abandonment of releases for lesser-used platforms. And these represent the best-case scenario. Join Us Join us in building censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for billions of daily users and realizing the vision that is Bitcoin Cash! @Bitcoin_ABC

What is Bitcoin ABC's “Take Code Ownership” Project? Bitcoin ABC aims to scale Bitcoin Cash to handle the payments needs of billions of daily users. We must scale, and there is no time to waste. The competition is not waiting, and we must reach the market first, or risk irrelevance. Every design choice that Bitcoin ABC makes to support the P2P electronic cash vision is a design choice that takes us away from the Bitcoin Core model and lessens our ability to inexpensively leverage the Bitcoin Core workforce and their backports. Still Limited by Bitcoin Core Yes, currently, due to Bitcoin ABC being underfunded, we spend about 90% of developer time just keeping Bitcoin Cash secure, running and updated. As such, we rely on code backports — the copying of open-source code - from Bitcoin Core. Because of this, Bitcoin Cash even now, 2.5 years after the 2017 fork that created BCH, remains hampered by Bitcoin Core's digital-gold, anti-scaling technical vision and decisions. The Cost of Change For every change made to the Bitcoin ABC codebase, there is a corresponding cost not just for that change, but also for the peer review, revisions prior to commits, future Bitcoin Core backports, testing, and maintenance. In order to realize the Bitcoin Cash vision and improve BCH as peer-to-peer electronic cash, Bitcoin Cash needs to chart its own path and establish its own technical leadership. Even when changes are small, they can result in medium- and long-term ongoing expenses. Once assumed, these expenses can not be merely undone. They must be factored into the long-term cost of building and maintaining Bitcoin Cash infrastructure.  Lack of adequate and sustained funding for Bitcoin ABC is a blocking issue on this front. This is an issue our business plan solves, with your support. @Bitcoin_ABC

What is Bitcoin ABC's Mempool Overhaul Project? The mempool is at the center of everything in Bitcoin Cash. Currently, however, it suffers from a number of inefficiencies. We need to change how the mempool works in order to grow beyond the Bitcoin Core store-of-value/digital-gold model and lay the groundwork for billions of daily users. The issues with the current mempool code stem from the fact that the code inherited from Bitcoin Core is optimized for a situation where blocks are small, and are always full. This results in a number of design decisions that are not suitable for Bitcoin Cash’s goal of high transaction throughput and a block size limit that is always above demand. A Significant Change Bitcoin ABC's Mempool Overhaul project constitutes a significant change in how Bitcoin Cash works. Its implementation will result in Bitcoin Core backports becoming more challenging, if not unviable. Because the mempool is central to many functions of the node software, improving the mempool code has several benefits including: dramatically improve or completely eliminate the 50-unconfirmed chain transaction limit; improve the fee structure and potential reintroduction of “free” transactions; better scalability via parallelizations, block template construction, etc.; many efficiency improvements; simpler, more maintainable code. Increased Maintenance Overhead Costs Under no circumstances can we embark on the Mempool Overhaul project without a significant and ongoing budget. The Mempool Overhaul requires a workforce to maintain it on an ongoing basis. Undertaking this project without adequate, sustained funding would constitute an existential threat to Bitcoin Cash, since after it is completed, maintenance tasks will increase considerably compared to the status quo. The Mempool Overhaul represents BCH stepping out of BTC's shadow and tossing aside the support lines. The Mempool Overhaul constitutes Bitcoin Cash taking leadership of the Bitcoin vision. It gives birth to many new possibilities and results in a distinctive codebase for BCH. @Bitcoin_ABC

The Bitcoin ABC 2020-2022 Strategy & Roadmap The goal of Bitcoin ABC is to build the software infrastructure needed for Bitcoin Cash to be successful as world-scale sound money. We are “building the roads” for Bitcoin Cash.  We are building the platform for potentially tens of thousands of new Bitcoin Cash businesses as we scale Bitcoin Cash to billions of daily users. With this goal in mind, we have developed a long-term strategy in order to get to that destination. There are many challenges along the way, and competitors that need to be outrun. The steps outlined here give us a fighting chance to best the competition, and let BCH achieve its potential. Principles The Bitcoin ABC strategy revolves around the following principles: long-term sustainable infrastructure, not showy short-term projects or big announcements that lack substance; focusing efforts on building reliable foundations for the future, as opposed to optimizing components that will just have to be changed again later, thus minimizing technical debt; serving the needs of users, miners and merchants; continuous technical improvement;  that reality is constantly changing and we must change with it; paying off the technical debt incurred in the early days of Bitcoin development by moving away from fragile code towards greater security and reliability; and the goal of a maintainable codebase. Bitcoin Cash is fundamentally sound. Bitcoin ABC aims to keep it that way. To become a solid base for application development and innovation by Bitcoin Cash businesses, Bitcoin Cash needs to continuously improve and compete. Roadmap This Bitcoin ABC 2020 business plan covers the one-year (1 year) period from 1 May 2020 to 30 Apr 2021 inclusive and focuses on the following development projects. While we have already raised part of our 2020-2021 budget, Bitcoin ABC still requires funding of USD$2 million to meet the following roadmap goals. For your reference, the high-level Bitcoin Cash Roadmap is available at BitcoinCash.org/roadmap.html. https://www.bitcoincash.org/roadmap.html $1.2m: Continued Progress Funding of between USD$1.2 million and $2 million will enable Bitcoin ABC to not just continue basic operations but also make some significant improvements. **Fractional Satoshis**. This is the ability to specify amounts more precise than 1 satoshi. The status quo is that when the market price of BCH rises, so will inevitably the transaction fees. With fractional satoshis, we can keep transaction fees low indefinitely. **Adaptive Block Size**. This is the ability to grow the block size based on market demand up to 1TB from the current  32MB. This will permit Bitcoin Cash transactions per second to grow in a flexible and market-based adaptive manner. **Redundant Coding Capability**. We need to have multiple programmers on the team who have a deep understanding of the codebase, and can quickly debug problems.  **DevOps**. This includes basic devops (with some capability redundancy to fix unexpected bugs), miner support, fixing chain problems in real time, etc. Improved DevOps is “capital building” in the sense that it improves the project’s future ability to develop code more rapidly and reliably in the future. **Code Quality**. Continuously improving the quality of the codebase through bug fixes, catching up on security-critical Bitcoin Core backports, and low-hanging-fruit consensus changes (for example, sigops counting). These improvements reduce the likelihood of bugs, make it easier to maintain the code over time, and eases the onboarding of new developers. $2m: Breaking Ranks with Bitcoin Core for the P2P Electronic Cash Vision With funding of USD$2 million, Bitcoin ABC will take important steps forward that are required to establish the technical foundation required for the P2P electronic cash vision and the Bitcoin Cash roadmap. This includes forging our own path away from Bitcoin Cash’s current dependency on Bitcoin Core backports, a dependency which in technical terms keeps us subservient to the digital gold narrative and preserves unchallenged Bitcoin Core’s market dominance. **Mempool Overhaul**. This includes high-priority non-consensus improvements, primarily re-working the mempool code paths. This is a large and important project that will provide multiple basic improvements to Bitcoin Cash, including the following. See a forthcoming article for more information.  dramatically improve or completely eliminate the 50-unconfirmed chain transaction limit reintroduction of “free” transactions better scalability via parallelizations, block template construction, etc. improve the fee structure many efficiency improvements simpler, more maintainable code **Take Code Ownership**. We should not be constrained to following Bitcoin Core in most areas. Bitcoin Cash’s vision of P2P electronic cash for the world requires different technical decisions. But taking code ownership also implies greater ongoing costs for Bitcoin ABC. See a forthcoming article for more information. **Fix Block Time Oscillations**: We will take steps to reduce the variations in block times and ensure blocks happen on a more regular schedule. See a forthcoming article for more information. **Faster Block Propagation**: We’ll use Graphene or another solution to achieve faster block propagation times, which will benefit from our work on CTOR. Faster block propagation means more consistent profits for miners and lower risk for all network participants. **Staff Redundancy**. Otherwise known as “Amaury-redundancy”, we will have on staff 1-2 developers capable enough to take over from Amaury if and when needed. **Staffing Stability**. With more developers, we will be able to provide emergency technical support with devs on call for urgent problems. @Bitcoin_ABC

Why Bitcoin ABC is Raising Funds Right Now Bitcoin ABC builds the most essential Bitcoin Cash infrastructure, our full node software which is used to produce almost every Bitcoin Cash block. The Bitcoin ABC project also performs the essential tasks of maintaining this software, providing support for it, backporting Bitcoin Core code, defending the Bitcoin Cash network from attacks and more. "Running in Place" Currently, 90% of Bitcoin ABC developer time is absorbed with keeping Bitcoin Cash secure, running and updated. We must dedicate most of our minimal resources to “running in place” as we ensure the Bitcoin Cash network transcends scaling bottlenecks and remains up to date with the fast-moving Internet.  Work on new features barely registers in the workload at this time. But we are not content simply to preserve the status quo. Bitcoin ABC is building censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for the masses - Bitcoin that scales. Bitcoin ABC is assembling a team of world-class engineering professionals to achieve this mission. Well-Positioned to Make Rapid Progress The work Bitcoin ABC has completed so far — on backports, cleaning up technical debt, implementing automated testing infrastructure and more — has us well-positioned now to make rapid progress on new features and significant improvements to the Bitcoin Cash protocol. Reality is constantly changing and we must change with it. Keeping up with the latest tools and technology requires funding. Advancing the Bitcoin Cash roadmap requires even more. https://www.bitcoincash.org/roadmap.html The alternative is only to fall behind other cryptocurrency projects, to only worsen community polarization, to render increased adoption a hazardous endeavor and to only increase the eventual cost of building censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for the world, assuming we are still able to at some later date. The Competition is not Waiting We want Bitcoin Cash to out-compete other cryptocurrency projects that are investing heavily in infrastructure. But other cryptocurrency projects are not waiting for Bitcoin Cash. If we don’t grow, the rest of the space will move ahead of us. Remedying this only becomes more expensive the longer we wait. Bitcoin ABC is the only Bitcoin Cash protocol development team proven ready and capable of assuming this challenge. Bitcoin ABC has a strong funding plan that offers Bitcoin Cash miners, exchanges, other businesses, projects, holders and users the opportunity to sponsor Bitcoin ABC infrastructure development and get concrete benefits in return. We seek your feedback and participation in our sponsorship plan. We stand ready to hear your needs and see how Bitcoin ABC can help you achieve your goals. The goal of Bitcoin ABC is to build the software infrastructure needed for Bitcoin Cash to be successful. We are “building the roads” for Bitcoin Cash.  We are building the platform for potentially tens of thousands of new Bitcoin Cash businesses as we scale Bitcoin Cash to billions of daily users. P2P Electronic Cash for Billions of Daily Users The Bitcoin ABC vision is censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash that has low fees, is instant, easy to use, fungible and scales to meet the daily payments demands of billions of daily users around the globe. Bitcoin ABC envisions a world where billions of people use Bitcoin Cash to make daily payments of basic necessities, for investments and loans, for international trade, remittances and much more. We believe this is a civilization-changing technology which will dramatically increase human freedom and prosperity. In pursuit of that vision, Bitcoin ABC builds and maintains the most essential infrastructure for the Bitcoin Cash ecosystem in the form of our Bitcoin ABC full node Bitcoin Cash software. Our strategy is to build a professional and stable Bitcoin Cash full node client that permits the efficient mining of tens of thousands of transactions per second (TPS), as well as complementary high-capacity tools. All of this so that Bitcoin Cash businesses can build their business models on a solid foundation, and be profitable themselves. We aim to support the key features of digital cash, including the following: massive on-chain scaling to more than 10,000 transactions per second (TPS)  that enables Bitcoin Cash to become a global currency; a reliable payments experience that doesn't degrade as the network scales; instant payments without requiring changes to the consensus rules (via, for example, Avalanche pre-consensus); and fungibility (via, for example, Cash Shuffle and Cash Fusion). The Bitcoin ABC vision is quite simply to continue innovating as we grow Bitcoin Cash’s leadership position as censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for the mainstream, with low fees and instant payments. This vision depends on our ability to deliver our roadmap, which requires funding. Join us in building censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for billions of daily users and realizing the vision that is Bitcoin Cash! Bitcoin ABC Kicks Off 2020 Business Plan Fundraising Bitcoin ABC is proud to announce we’re kicking off our 2020 Business Plan Fundraising Drive this month. We are raising funds to sustain our operations for 1 year at a level that permits us to make important progress on the Bitcoin Cash roadmap. Bitcoin Cash is the global leader in P2P electronic cash and we must provision the protocol development resources necessary to build a P2P electronic cash system that will reliably serve billions of daily users. The Most Essential Bitcoin Cash Infrastructure Bitcoin ABC builds the most essential Bitcoin Cash infrastructure, our full node software which is used to produce almost every Bitcoin Cash block. Due to our past hard work on backports, maintenance, paying technical debt and more, Bitcoin ABC is now well-positioned to make rapid progress on the Bitcoin Cash scaling roadmap. The Bitcoin ABC project also performs the essential tasks of maintaining this software, providing support for it, backporting Bitcoin Core code, defending the Bitcoin Cash network from attacks and more. Currently, 90% of Bitcoin ABC developer time is absorbed with keeping Bitcoin Cash secure, running and updated. We must dedicate most of our minimal resources to “running in place” as we ensure the Bitcoin Cash network transcends scaling bottlenecks and remains up to date with the fast-moving Internet. Work on new features barely registers in the workload at this time precisely due to lack of funding. Bitcoin That Scales But we are not content simply to preserve the status quo. Bitcoin ABC is building censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for the masses - Bitcoin that scales. Bitcoin ABC is assembling a team of world-class engineering professionals to achieve this mission. Reality is constantly changing and we must change with it. Keeping up with the latest tools and technology requires funding. Advancing the Bitcoin Cash roadmap requires even more. The alternative is only to fall behind other cryptocurrency projects, to only worsen community polarization, to render increased adoption a hazardous endeavor and to only increase the eventual cost of building censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for the world, assuming we are still able to at some later date. Miners, Exchanges & Other Businesses Bitcoin ABC has a strong funding plan that offers Bitcoin Cash miners, exchanges and other businesses the opportunity to sponsor Bitcoin ABC infrastructure development and get concrete benefits in return. We are enabling miners to achieve greater efficiency, and therefore greater profits. Join Us Join us in building censorship-resistant P2P electronic cash for the world and realizing the vision that is Bitcoin Cash!
