Midnight Gems 2.0 - The written Radio Show - Episode 10 "Battle of the Cocky Blonds"
It´s just that do so every week I get into my YouTube Hyper-loop that takes me down the algorithmic Rabbit Hole. I flow past oldies, into the now and out of sight and comfort zone. Every click gets me deeper into the unknown. Sometimes I am lost for hours, no food no drink just me tripping.
Then when I am fully filled with songs and sounds, I shape a form that brings out the best of what I want to share.
Humans have very little going for them, but music is so worth our time.....
So this series is my legacy and I hope I am allowed to write many more, before I visit all the greats for that final Big Gig In The Sky.
I wanted to play something by Low and sang by Mimi Parker last week as a tribute, but it somehow did not feel right. But it feels freaking right tonight. Low is just such a hidden gem rainy autumn songs like this weight of water need a couple of plays to sink in. But once sunk in, they are entwined with your musical DNA.
And I have to agree that this song feeñs a little like a funeral party, and that is what it is RIP MIMI.
Talking about gems I was so impressed when my ears encountered this lady. This song makes the original version fade away. Sorry, Paul "Love & Pride" King but this is how your song should have sounded.
Let´s take a step forward, a step out of this graveyard mood I am getting you all into. Paul King, of course, was a fine artist and a weird VJ, just talking about him makes me dream about those MTV days, how time flies.
I had such a crush on Tracy Tracy although I liked that other blond even more, the one from I don't want your Money Honey. We got to keep moving forward so let's jump 20 years from 1988 to 2008 and keep it cocky and blond.
I can hardly remember the movie (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) but this song is still stuck in my head. These twelve years do show, but their current music is still worth a listen.
Me not wanting to go too screamo on you all was really happy with this song. You feel it building up, but he keeps it in. Unlike they do in this song that sounds like the bastard child of Linkin Park & Bloodbath.
But I needed a nice little song by a very interesting band to make a nice little bridge to this beauty. Another Bastard from Chester, but now he did it with guys from Imagine Dragons.
It´s amazing to hear how these new bands carry the scars of those Icons I used to play. But I am not stuck in my past..... not yet. Discovering and Sharing new music is still such a joy, and while these guys are not new...they were to me...until this song crossed my rabbit hole this week.
She just blew me away, this is true talent and will probably always remain just underneath the surface just like her Dad did.
Riddle Me This
This is the no longer new topic in my written radio show. But it will be returning each week if nobody was able to guess my Tune Tune Train Riddle before this show.
In my Tune Tune Train sessions, I play 3 songs and it´s up to you dear reader to figure out what connects these songs. If you have a clue, just drop it in the comments and the first one that gets it right will get an honorable mention and an Ecency Boost.
The connections can be as crazy as I am. Last week the connection was that all three artists had a huge hit about Roses. The week before all songs had appeared in my Midnight gems Session Episode 5. It can be easy as pie or hard as a rock, and I hope you enjoy my little riddles.
But appearing here on Friday means that nobody guessed it so far, hence there will also be an extra hint to make it easy.
But first this week´s songs:
Now you got this hint already:
Stop looking at your feet and solve the riddle.
And the additional clue you will be getting is; The last song is from a German Movie called Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run in English).
Oh and being Dutch, German, Flemish, or Afrikaans gives you a slight advantage.
Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.
My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.
Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years...Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.
Hope you enjoyed this slightly confronting wave of fantastic music and that you still feel like joining me on the next Midnight Gems Session coming soon.
