Midnight Gems 2.0 - The written Radio Show - Episode 1 "A Little bit of British Accents"

For almost two years I have been writing my Midnight Gem Sessions, always starting with these iconic words:

For those of you that are new to my MidNight Gems series. Welcome to this nightly trip on which we will uncover & recover some amazing songs & covers.

Now that is not gonna change!

What I am going to change is to try to make the format even more like a written Radioshow. And also create some continuity. Meaning there will be a Midnight Gems Session every Friday Night.

As your virtual DJ I will be addressing you my Dear Reader and you can talk back. Tell me about your greatest finds of the last week or month in the comments. Or about what Gems the audience should really listen to, or just that one weird song you heard but never found.

As always I am very much in doubt about how to kick it off tonight, but as I am reinventing my Midnight Gems (just a little) I think there is nothing more appropriate than this song.

Münchhausen - Here Again (Piano Cover) Original Song

It's funny to share this cover because not only is the Artist doing a cover of a song he himself wrote for his highly undervalued indie rock project called Münchhausen. But it was this Artist and that project that inspired the first Midnight Gems session back in the days that ETH was still POW.

So we are here again, and I will be taking you on another fine trip. And trust me I have as little a clue where we are going as you do dear reader. But I am kinda sure we are gonna end up in total darkness.

Now that was all sweet and pianissimo but I know you like it darker, weirder, and well as I shared the other songs of this Trilogy of The Tale Of Jenny And Screech before, I thought it would be a devilish good moment to share the latest part.

Ren - Violet's Tale

And that song just got me into the mood for another song about girls of the night and the red lights

Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

How can I not play with that reference, I can't stop stealing that beautiful bridge. But of course, we are gonna do it the Midnight Gems way. This version of that O.G. girl of the night song is very well done if you ask me.

Brothers Moving - Roxanne (The Police) @ Grand Canyon

The question is can I get away with playing another Police song? Of course, I could, but wouldn´t it be more fun to listen to how the Police could have sounded when they would be growing up today, Okay Boomers?

Everyone You Know - The Drive (Official Video)

That song starts out with that Bristol sound with a "London" Accent and then just gets crazier as it goes along, and going down that same road I found these guys.

Audio Bullys - This Road

Those accents make me think of a stupid mistake. Ever since I heard Mr. Brightside I thought that the Killers were British trying to sound American. It took me a couple of songs to figure out they were Americans. Still, I wonder how would that song have sounded with a real British accent.

Maybe a bit like this.

The Child - Mr. Brightside / The Killers (Cover) Live In Session at The Silk Mill

There was another cover by a Brit of this song, but his version just did not fit. Both lack a little in quality, but both are good enough to satisfy my curiosity.

Fortunately, that other guy had a great song that fitted perfectly tonight. From the Brightside into the darkness with Frank Turner. Check him out he is a gem, or just read my post next week in which I will be using some of his songs.

Frank Turner - There She Is

Love that song, it could be an instant classic at least in my book. She might be everything, but she is not the last song tonight.

I remember that during my DJing days, I had some nights that I would always start or end with a certain song. Now I am not going to do that as I have way too many cool songs to share.

But if I would use a song, I would end every Midnight Gems session In Total Darkness. I discovered this pearl went it had 3 views, I have plugged it and right now it has 20 views. It deserves a million if you ask me!

Newborn Huskies - In Total Darkness

What the fluff are midnight gems?

Somewhere lost in time, trying to escape out of the rabbit hole back into the rat race there is a vacuum..... that´s the place where midnight gems are found.

My Midnight Gems will try to uncover & recover those beautiful songs that nobody ever noticed or might have been forgotten.

Who the fluff am I?

Being a former DJ playing about everything and having an uncompleted study of radio journalism. I have been wanting to do this for years....Thought about it many nights and guess now it´s time to finally take it to the streets.

Hope you enjoyed this slightly confronting wave of amazing music and you still feel like joining me on the next special edition trip as vol.81 of Midnight Gems is coming soon.
