Blood oath in a romantic relationship
When I was growing up, I had watched alot of home movies where an actor and an actress would portray to be deeply in love to the extent that they go into a blood covenant. Infact, those days it was believed that blood covenant was the major criterion used in quantifying true love.
From what I could remember from those movies, both young lovers would make a little cut on each their fingers and the drops of blood would be allowed to drop into a glass of water. Then each of the partners would take turn in drinking from the glass. Sometimes, the lovers might go to the extreme by visiting a sorcerer who would who invoke some strong spiritual undertones.
After all has been done, the lovers were expected to be faithful and committed to each other for better for worse and forever. There would also be very serious repercussions if one of the partners abandons the other for a new lover. Something terrible might happen to the betrayer; such as insanity or even dying a painful way.
Later on, I started hearing real life stories of insecure lovers who opt for blood convenant in order to cement the love between them forever. Well, it's quite funny. I read a story of a woman who had a blood pact with her high school sweetheart while they were still teenagers.
Well, they were so in "love" that they had to make an eternal commitment and got married after graduation. Some years after the marriage, her husband turned into something else and he began to physically abuse the woman he claimed to love almost on a weekly basis. The lady was ofcourse traumatised but couldn't leave the husband because of the wrath that would befall on her as a consequent of the blood oath that had happened between them years ago.
Things went from bad to worse but she continued to endured. Later on she got information that her husband have been seen with different women at various locations. That was when she realized how silly she had been for believing that a blood oath had power over her life. Well, to cut the long story short, she still had to seek the assistance of a priest to invalidate the blood oath before moving ahead with her life.
Funny how things we see in the movie could make one dumber instead of smarter.
I don't think that such practices still exists in today's world of alarming promiscuity and infidelity. Also, coupled with the fact that people have become more enlightened and don't care about such diabolical crap anymore.
Personally, I don't even think that the success of a union even depend on the beautiful marital vows and wedding rings exchanged by couples on the altar. A successful marriage depends on the level of commitment and extra efforts that each of the partners are willing to give in order to make their union work, despite all odds.
Blood covenant is more of a prayer than a ritual and wouldn't affect any of the participating partners the moment they cease to believe in it.

Thanks for reading 😁💝
I never knew of this before until I saw a couple who broke up. My Dad trying to mediate asked what marriage did they do? They said it was blood covenant 😂. I think blood covenant happens especially among the illiterates.
