Blood oath in a romantic relationship

When I was growing up, I had watched alot of home movies where an actor and an actress would portray to be deeply in love to the extent that they go into a blood covenant. Infact, those days it was believed that blood covenant was the major criterion used in quantifying true love.

From what I could remember from those movies, both young lovers would make a little cut on each their fingers and the drops of blood would be allowed to drop into a glass of water. Then each of the partners would take turn in drinking from the glass. Sometimes, the lovers might go to the extreme by visiting a sorcerer who would who invoke some strong spiritual undertones.

After all has been done, the lovers were expected to be faithful and committed to each other for better for worse and forever. There would also be very serious repercussions if one of the partners abandons the other for a new lover. Something terrible might happen to the betrayer; such as insanity or even dying a painful way.

Later on, I started hearing real life stories of insecure lovers who opt for blood convenant in order to cement the love between them forever. Well, it's quite funny. I read a story of a woman who had a blood pact with her high school sweetheart while they were still teenagers.

Well, they were so in "love" that they had to make an eternal commitment and got married after graduation. Some years after the marriage, her husband turned into something else and he began to physically abuse the woman he claimed to love almost on a weekly basis. The lady was ofcourse traumatised but couldn't leave the husband because of the wrath that would befall on her as a consequent of the blood oath that had happened between them years ago.

Things went from bad to worse but she continued to endured. Later on she got information that her husband have been seen with different women at various locations. That was when she realized how silly she had been for believing that a blood oath had power over her life. Well, to cut the long story short, she still had to seek the assistance of a priest to invalidate the blood oath before moving ahead with her life.

Funny how things we see in the movie could make one dumber instead of smarter.

I don't think that such practices still exists in today's world of alarming promiscuity and infidelity. Also, coupled with the fact that people have become more enlightened and don't care about such diabolical crap anymore.

Personally, I don't even think that the success of a union even depend on the beautiful marital vows and wedding rings exchanged by couples on the altar. A successful marriage depends on the level of commitment and extra efforts that each of the partners are willing to give in order to make their union work, despite all odds.

Blood covenant is more of a prayer than a ritual and wouldn't affect any of the participating partners the moment they cease to believe in it.

I never knew of this before until I saw a couple who broke up. My Dad trying to mediate asked what marriage did they do? They said it was blood covenant 😂. I think blood covenant happens especially among the illiterates.

Lol. Actually not really illiterates. It's one of those youthful exurberances where two youngsters who fell in love for the first time in their lives become madly in love and start doing strange things just to prove their love for each other ......But later in the future thier eyes would definitely clear 😆

That blood covenant is the most stupid thing I have ever heard, even as a child. I instantly knew it was rubbish the first time I heard it because it will give one person power to cheat while the other person who isn't wise will keep thinking that something bad will happen if they leave the relationship

Ahhh. In most cases the woman is at the recieving end. I was told about a girl who had four abortions for her "soulmate" while in school as he was not ready to be a father yet. since she beleived that they belong to each other forever, she thought that there was no sacrifice they couldn't make for each other. But After graduation, he dumped her for another girl immediately he went for NYSC. The guyman told her frankly on phone that she should forget all about the blood oath and move on with her life.... The poor girl almost commit suicide

Its funny how can we get so lost in amazement into a movie/stories and later on find our self living like just like it in reality but only the worst version of it. I guess love can sometimes make us all dumb at some point of our life hehe

There have been accounts of blood pacts in the past but I haven't encountered a man and woman doing it.
