There is an anecdote according to which Lorenzo de 'Medici persuaded Michelangelo to bury his work, which he named as a statue of "sleeping Cupid", which he made as a replica of a famous Roman sculpture, and that after some time, supposedly surprised by the excavation, he would not li raised her value. Michelangelo, who was otherwise prone to lying, agreed. The statue was buried in such a way that Cardinal Rafaelo Riario enthusiastically bought it for big money, convinced that he had bought an old excavation of inestimable importance.
