The unequal justice for Gender Identification

This topic is one of the most controversial and debatable issues of the 21st century. Gender identity has increased and became more difficult nowadays. From just male and female identification in the past to a more complicated classification of the present. The issue has also contributed to the problem of gender inequality which made it a more intense problem in society.

What is Gender?

Gender is the way a person conceptualizes him/herself of who they are, specifically identifying themselves as a male or female or sometimes both or neither. Gender identity is usually identified by a person because of environmental factors but sometimes an innate character inherited from the family itself. This results in the existence of so many gender identification aside from the biological identity a person has.

Gender expression?

Gender expression is the way we express ourselves. It is how we behave and we portray ourselves both physically, emotionally, and psychologically. This expression becomes the basis of the people around us on how they will judge or consider us as feminine or masculine.

The problem with this expression is that if we have certain characteristics that we can’t change that fast so that it fits the judgment of the people around us. Like for example, a man who’s not so masculine in physical character and the way he expresses himself to everyone is slightly feminine. This will likely come to a judgment that he is gay or bisexual even if that man considers himself as straight.

What is sex? How does it differs from gender?

Sex is a biological attribute both in humans and animals. Technically, this is how science identifies whether a person is a man or a woman. More commonly known as a person’s identity upon birth. As we all know sex is only classified into two, male/female.

Sex and gender are often used interchangeably, probably because of their close meaning with each other, however, we need to understand that sex talks about a set of biological characteristics while gender is related to the socially constructed identity that a man or woman should be.

What is sexual orientation?

Sexual orientation describes a person’s enduring physical, emotional, and romantic attraction to another person either heterosexual or homosexual.

Gender Inequality

Gender inequality is one of the oldest issues in history. It is the situation in which the sex or gender’s rights and dignity differ from each other. This leads to unequal treatment in both identity hence the reason for the existence of stereotyping.

In the past, gender stereotyping was typical and can easily be seen or observed because they believe that a certain kind of job or work is intended only for men and does not suit women such as engineering. The concept which the roles of the father, mother, and children in the family is also part of this stereotyping. The father is the one who finds a job and provides for the family and the mother is intended to take care of the children. The same goes with the company organizations, most of the leaders were men and it’s rare to have a woman leader. All of this happens before because of stereotyping and the unequal treatment of rights of both men and women even though they are both humans.

Nowadays, this issue is not more of a concern due to various movements that promote equality. Today, women can do whatever men do. More and more women can now become a leader of the organization and almost everything can be done by them just like men can. There are now mixed genders in the teaching profession, engineering, commerce, and many more.

However, the issue is still present to those people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community where the community is still unprepared to fully accept the existence of the people who identified themselves in the third sex.

Probably you heard about this sentence “ We are tolerated but not accepted” this is a well-known issue and a big one for them because they want acceptance and not mere tolerance but sadly their voices have fallen to deaf ears and discrimination is still a widespread problem throughout the world. Some organizations don’t give attention to their rights thus crimes involving a member of LGBTQ+ are inevitable.

I hope that someday our community will find a way to fully accept that because a person is biologically a man doesn’t mean he thinks and behave directly as to what his sex is. We need to understand and find a way to deeply accept beneath our heart and soul that a person can change through time and so as the culture, behaviors, and everything. Learn to adopt because those who can’t will likely not survive just like the theory of natural selection by Charles Darwin.

Remember that people change and so does our society. Adopting and accepting is how we survive as a species and also the way to survive as human beings. We cannot measure their capabilities by just looking at their gender. Yes, they are gay but sometimes gays are more masculine in terms of responsibility than that straight men. C’mon, be fair and reasonable enough. Enough with our biases because it will only lead us to chaos and losses.

I hope this article opens our minds about the importance of acceptance because nothing is more fulfilling than acceptance and love and care.
