Play your part
"Uuurrrggghhh!" Julia vomited again, making it the fifth time she would be throwing up within a few hours. To make matters worse, every episode of vomiting was accompanied with stooling. She was so weak that she barely could stand on her own. Margret gathered her daughter in her hands and tried to make her drink some oral drip she had prepared. As soon as Julia gulped down some of the solution, her mother proceeded to remove her clothes. After cleaning her up, she placed her on the bed and then commenced cleaning up the mess on the floor. As she moved about, she muttered "the blood of Jesus" under her breath repeatedly.
As soon as she finished cleaning up the floor, Julia got up abruptly and vomited again. This time, she was stooling uncontrollably. Margret rushed her to the bathroom and cleaned her up. Julia felt lifeless in her arms as Margaret carried her daughter back to the room. The situation so overwhelmed her that she just didn't know what else to do. She started to cry. Before long, someone knocked and opened the door without waiting to be invited in. It was her neighbour, Annie. She had heard Margaret crying and had quickly come over to make sure she was okay.
"Margi," as she is fondly called, "what is it, is Julia getting worse? "Margret couldn't say anything, she only nodded her head. Immediately, Annie took charge of the situation. She announced they were leaving for the hospital immediately. She asked Margret to get dressed, as she found a dress for Julia. Margret hesitated. She said she would wait for her pastor to come over and offer some prayers before anything else. Exasperated, Annie screamed This child is dying! if she doesn't get medical attention immediately, you will blame yourself for the rest of your life!" Margaret shuddered. Shock waves travelled down her spine. that was all the motivation she needed.
They were on the way to the hospital in a jiffy. At the hospital, Margret: could hardly respond to many of the questions the nurses asked her. She just sobbed as she watched a nurse place her daughter on drip. Annie consoled and encouraged her to stay strong. When she offered to go back to Margret's house to clean it up and prepare something for her o eat, Margret obliged. She was grateful and relieved.
Back in Margret's house, everywhere was a mess. Annie did a thorough cleaning and arrangement of the rooms. When she was done, she proceeded to the kitchen to clean it up. As she stepped in, she was greeted with a gory sight of unwashed utensils that seemed to have been there for days. The odour from the utensils was nauseating. Annie had to open the windows and backdoor to allow some fresh air. She even had to stand outside for several minutes before she could go in to clean up the piles of dirty utensils in Margret's kitchen.
By the time Annie got back to the hospital with food, fruits, and some change of clothes for both mother and child, Julia was already out of danger. Margret was calm. She thanked Annie for what she had done for her, but Annie kept a straight face.
Margret withdrew and asked what the matter was. Annie didn't respond immediately. she waited for the nurses to leave and for Margret to eat something before giving her a piece of her mind.
"Margi," she began, "if i don't tell you the truth, then i am not a good friend and neighbour."
"Okay," Margi nodded and waited for Annie to continue.
"Margi, if you don't want Julia or anyone in your house to continue to fall sick like this, then you'd have to make a drastic change."
"god forbid! no one will ever get this sick again in my home. the god i serve will never allow that."
"oh please, margi! leave god out of this! god will always play his part because he is a faithful god, but do you play your own part? will god come down and keep your house clean for you? would he send his angels to wash your dirty dishes? what about the waste bins and the sewage spilling everywhere? would he empty those for you as well? who knows what really happened to Julia. do you know she could have eaten from any of the unwashed dishes? you had better change before someone else gets sick again."
