The reason why Cheragi hill is named:
It is said that a Sufi saint named Hazrat Badr Shah came to Chittagong by climbing on a rock in the sea with an earthen lamp or a chaati in his hand for the purpose of propagating Islam from the Arab countries. At that time Chittagong was deeply forested and inhabited by jinn fairies. When Badr Shah climbed a low hill, the jinn fairies prevented him and did not allow him to stay. Then, in the darkness of the night, when Badr Shah asked for a place to light his lamp on the hill, the jinns agreed. But after lighting the lamp, the jinns could not bear the light of the lamp and left the place and Badr Shah made a place of worship there. Note that "Cheragi hill" is also known as "Chatir hill", Chati means earthen lamp. Many people think that the name Chatigan> Chatgaon> Chittagong originates from this word "Chati". At present there is a beautiful installation resembling a lamp on this Cheragi hill.
