Family as the Most Important Socializing Agent

There are diverse groups of people that form a society. However, each individual in these groups grows up in an environment where they have many factors that impact their growth – the so-called agents of socialization. There are different agents of socialization: religion, peers, family, and others. Family is an agent of socialization which is considered the most important factor that impacts an individual.

It is vital for individuals to be socialized at an early age for them to develop their behavior, and this where a family plays a huge role. People are born as “blank slate” which means in an original state, and it is their families that serve as a socializing unit to hone their understanding about the society they belong in. Landis (1939) states that individuals are the most sensitive to stimuli during their early childhood; thus experiences with their families deeply register (Landis, 1939). In most cases, the family is the unit which is the first one to be around to an individual from the moment they start to say words such as “Ma!” up until the moment they can finally form more coherent phrases to say. Hence, the family is the key influencer for individuals to be well-equipped with knowledge.

To conclude, family is a primary agent that socializes children and hones their understanding. As a socializing agent, family is the one who builds the foundation for an individual to grow in the society. Thus, family’s impact to an individual’s life is very critical, making it the most important socializing agent.
