Coconut coir, waste that has many benefits
Indonesia is a tropical country, here coconut trees thrive and become one of the core of the plantation sector. Coconut has many benefits ranging from leaves, tree trunks and fruit. Young leaves, commonly called "janur", are usually made into "ketupat" wrappers, bones of old leaves can be used as broom sticks.
Water of young coconuts is enjoyed as a thirst quenching drink which is refreshing as well as healthy because it has many nutrients. While coconut milk is taken from old fruit, coconut shell can be used as decoration or charcoal briquettes as an export commodity which is currently in high demand. Skin of coconut fruit which we usually call coconut husk is also very useful. Coconut coir that has been processed can be used for planting media or what we usually call cocopeat. Or it can be used as a substitute for firewood. It seems that there is no part of the coconut plant that is not useful for human life.
It seems that it will take a lot of time if I discuss one by one parts of coconut tree that can be used, because all parts of coconut tree have their respective roles in providing benefits for us, I will try to discuss coconut fiber in my current writing. Actually, coconut coir can be used as a variety of products. For example, as a planting medium, namely cocopeat, as a household appliance namely a floor broom, some even process coconut husk into rope.
As a substitute for firewood
Coconut coir has flammable properties, so it is often used as a substitute for firewood by community. Usually people who live in mountains still often cook using traditional stoves so they need a lot of firewood for their cooking needs.
Usually in mountainous areas there are also very many coconut trees so it is certain that it will be very easy to find coconut fiber to use as a substitute for firewood.
As a basic material for crafts
Coconut coir can be used to make many products that have high economic value, when fiber from coconut coir has been decomposed it will be easy to process it into various products.
One of products made from coconut fiber that I have used so far is a floor broom, price is very affordable, it is proven to be of good quality and durable.
Another handicraft product from coconut fiber is plant pots made of coconut coir, pots like this are now starting to be used by many users because they are more efficient in storing water while also having nutrients needed by plants.
As a basic ingredient of Organic Fertilizer
Benefits of coconut coir are indeed very many, which can be processed and used as a type of organic fertilizer. This organic fertilizer made using coconut husk can absorb and store 60% more water than other fertilizers. This of course will be very useful for areas that have low rainfall or areas that often experience drought.
Coconut coir also contains nutrients and minerals that are very good for plant growth. So it is very suitable to be used as an ingredient for making organic fertilizers.
It doesn't feel like I took a lot of your time to read my writing, actually there are many more benefits or products that can be produced from coconut coir, but due to limited time and my knowledge, maybe on another occasion I will continue my writing. Thank you for reading to the end, hopefully it can add to your insight!
