What is the shape of the Earth?
From the moment I picked up science in school, it was a spherical shape. It was not perfectly round but it was spherical with some bulges maybe on its sides but it ain't a perfect round.
And I thought that everyone accepted that information as a well established fact backed up by years of research and empirical data. That's until only in the recent years, people have been trying to debunk this knowledge and spreading the belief that the Earth is "in fact", FLAT.
Flat-Earthers
There is an organization built to support this belief that people call the "ultimate conspiracy theory", that the Earth is flat. The flat earth society is established to gather people who share the same belief and to convince and persuade more people to join them in their theory.
At first, I thought that this theory started as a meme, or an internet joke but the more videos I see, the more things I read, the more that I am convinced that they are true believers and they genuinely believe that the Earth is indeed flat.
All the evidences that support the spherical model of the planet are all fabrications in their mind. They believe that NASA is leading other government agencies in the effort to cover up the truth that the Earth is flat. Interestingly though, the flat-Earthers could not offer any believable reason as to why these multi-agency faction is covering up this "fact". All they could say is that it's all about money. Well, I guess I could not say money makes the world go round then, can I?
According to what they believe, Earth is shaped like a disc and some of them believes that there is a dome covering this disc. And they believe that instead of gravity, the disc is accelerating upwards.
Some of their members believe that the side of the flat Earth is walls of ice mountains which are guarded by NASA to prevent people from climbing or going through it because they would fall off the face of the Earth, literally.
I think I can relate to their belief that one movie called "The Truman Show" by Jim Carrey. If you don't know what that movie is, the story is of a guy whose whole life is a huge Reality TV show. From the moment of his birth until he's a grown man and tried to escape the big, huge, humungous studio where they are filming. Yes, his house, his town, and all that he could see are part of a TV set. All the people he encounters are actors too.
Oh and if you want to watch it, please do try it. It's quite a good movie too, plus there are medical conditions attributed to it to. The Truman syndrome, people that believe that they are living in a TV sitcom.
The number of people believing this theory is constantly growing, there are even famous people who are vocal with their belief that the Earth is flat. None of which are in the field of science and or academic establishments.
I was watching a documentary related to this on Netflix called "Behind the Curve". One of their leaders said that it would be obvious that there are no science people on their side because once a person reached a certain level of education, that person is already captive and brainwashed into believing the governments offered conspiracy which is the spherical Earth.
The guy also said that they hate what the science people throw at them because it's always math, nothing but math and calculations but he said that they have visible evidence of the flat Earth. They were at that time standing on a seashore of some sort and were looking at buildings at a distant which the man said it's Seattle. According to him, if the Earth is indeed spherical in shape, those buildings would not be seen. Since they could be seen from their point of view, he said that it's evidence of the flat Earth.
People trying to understand Flat-Earthers said that these people are more reliant to sensory information, more than the empirical data that science and math agree upon. This means that what they see is what they believe, and what they can perceive must be the truth.
I don't know how these people then react to optical illusions. What they perceive must be the truth right?
Maybe they can devise an experiment or two to support their claim. I'm thinking an all-out attempt towards the ends of the Earth can be one. If they all march, or travel by boats or planes in constant straight lines, they will bound to reach the ends right?
Oh yeah, they can't use the planes and boats because they also claim that the GPS data have been tampered with to give people the impression that the Earth is a sphere.
Hmm.. okay, another thing that I thought of so they can really see is continuously flying upward until they hit the dome.
Or hey, what about this one. Two drones flying in the same altitude in the atmosphere, one has a laser and one has a receiver of some kind. Then they will move away from each other in a horizontal straight line, if they manage to travel the whole length of the Earth the light should still be received by the receiver right? If it's curve however, I think that they will lose contact since the light from the laser won't follow gravity and won't curve.
I just wonder though what the people on the International Space Station see and think about that. Or maybe they are the cameraman and technical crew that are maintaining the whole setup.
Epilogue
Believing is really interesting. There is this concept called confirmation bias that says people will tend to readily accept the information that will support or confirm what they already believe and will automatically reject those information that will prove what they believe wrong. I think this concept applies greatly to everyone.
I for one though, believe that the Earth is spherical in nature. The real question though is how gravity works. I think I'll expound on that on another article.
Hey folks!
It's funny though right? Why are they no round-Earth society. Why is there only Flat-Earth society. Anyhow, I am interested on what you think about this. I want to know your thoughts regarding this matter. Or if you are one of many who does not even care cause it bears no significance to life as a whole. Well, if you're on that last type, there's no harm in that too, it's your own prerogative eh?
Sometimes I think that debates and arguments like this one can really be interesting. Although it's not a fresh idea, it poses a question to the rational mind to exercise its reasonings and exercise a bit.
Anyhow, I really appreciate your time spent reading this article and as always...
Cheers!!!

Pwede na silang maihalintulad sa kulto, lols! Anyways, its what they believe and sarado na utak nila sa sasabihin ng iba. Although I was quite fascinted dun sa flat earth disc. And to be honest, nun ako'r musmos pa, akala ko din eh flat ang earth, hahahaha..
