She Tried to Pick Me Up

Normally, if you have lived a normal social life and if you're a girl you might have experienced it before. That thrilling feeling of self-awareness and most of the time annoying state of disturbance. That innocuous attempt in picking you up. I don't know how you interpret that but for a simple and average guy like me, it felt so interesting and for once, I had the feeling of being the center of someone's attention.

No, this is not another bar or clubbing story. This happened in a strange place, in a faraway land, and in just the most unbelievable setting.

It was a rather fine day and we just arrived at the airport in the beautiful city of Hongkong. My colleagues decided not to check into our accommodation first but rather go straight to Disneyland to try and make the most of the day.

So with huge bags and luggage we were dragging across the street we waited for a bus to take us to the train station where we could rendezvous with the world-famous mouse.

We stood on the curb and waited for the right bus to arrive. It took us a couple of minutes before we can get into one. Luckily, the weather was not so hot and it was a bit chilly so waiting underneath the sun was not that big of an issue for us. Finally, the bus arrived and we dragged our asses and our luggage onto the bus. The bus was spacious and it was cold.

There were also several vacant seats inside so we can take our seats albeit scattered. Right upfront, there was a vacant seat next to a young lady. I looked around and there were no other vacancies near me. Our eyes met and I smiled at her, I was not sure what language she was speaking because it was obvious that she was not a foreigner like me. I gestured towards the vacant seat next to her and she scooted a bit over to the window to make way for my lazy ass.

I carefully sat next to her and thanked her.

Thankfully, she was able to speak in English, a language which I was a bit comfortable hearing and speaking because I speak zero Chinese. We got to talking and I could not help but notice her pearly whites perfectly lined up inside her mouth. She had a really nice smile too.

Apparently, she was visiting a friend in the city and she was spending the night. And with her keen sense of interest, she managed to ascertain that we were visiting from another country and that I was from the Philippines. As we were limited with topics to talk about she opened up that she was still learning how to really speak English and that she was still a student, I just forgot how old she said she was. We commended each other's command of the foreign language and we were laughing here and there.

I was taken aback, surprised, and very much flattered when she asked me for my contact details. She asked for my phone number so we could catch up later in the day. She told me that there's a lot of places that we could go to and have fun, and I believed her. But since we were fresh from the airport, I have no local address I could give her. And to save me from the embarrassment our stop came and I needed to get off the bus. If I wasn't that shy, and if I was not with my coworkers then, I would definitely have gone out with that local girl. Her plump cheeks were so cute that I would trade for them against that mouse any day.

Well, in the end, I have never seen or heard from the girl again. It was just a blip on our whole trip and it was just a nice experience and exchange with a local. It was also a nice surprise since most of the people we have encountered in that country weren't that progressive nor that friendly. They would rather keep to themselves. I could just imagine if I have gone out with her at that time, maybe I am out looking for a long-lost child in the heart of the city, LOL.

It's just another fun story to tell and nothing more.
