Eight months, two days and ten hours, that was how long it has been. She looked out of her little window to the world outside. The world she has not been able to feel and experience for that long of a time.
The air that she has not been able to breathe, the sun ray that she has not been able to allow her skin to kiss and the plants she has not been able to touch with her fingers and flowers that she has not been able to smell at the park nearby where she usually go to, to find peace and quiet while she painted.
It felt like it has been forever, her lying in bed for most parts of the day. When it first started, she thought it was just a stomach discomfort. She had just finished breakfast that day and was preparing to practice her thrice a day piano playing for her coming exam.
It was then when she felt a weird discomfort around her abdominal area. She thought maybe it was food poisoning from the night before. They had packed some food from a nearby stall to try. It tasted pretty good, a street burger with omelet. Something that tasted good can never be truly good, she thought then.
The discomfort left as quickly as it came. At first she thought it was nothing. But oddly enough, the discomfort came back after a few hours. Slowly, the discomfort turned to pain, and it became more frequent towards the end of week. Her abdominal area felt bloated all the time. It was as though there was air stuck inside her.
One night, the pain became unbearable and she was rushed to the hospital. She went through scans after scans for a few days because the doctors couldn’t figure out what was going on at first until later, they discovered it was a condition of fluid buildup in the area around the organs in the abdomen. She should have gone to the hospital much earlier but it was too late to regret.
Throughout the duration from the day she was admitted into the hospital, she could only lie down in bed with bags around her to drain the fluid buildup and to help her pee. She was given drips too as she could not eat. Although she didn’t eat, she became bloated and fat, fat with fluid inside her. It was uncomfortable and it was painful. The only thing she could do was to lie down.
Every night, she cried to herself, thinking of the things she missed doing by herself, with her family and with her friends. She thought about the food that she missed eating. Her favourite cheese cake, her favourite ice cream, her favourite fried chicken. She should have eaten them when she thought about them before it all started but who knew this would happen.
There was a cushioned chair next to the window, which has been placed there especially for her, hoping that one day she could sit up to enjoy the scenery outside, open the window wide and breathe in the air from outside. But the day didn’t come and seemed further away everyday. Luckily, her bed was near the window. At least she could still have a glimpse of the outside, however little it may be.
Her friends gave her an aquarium bowl with two little fish, to accompany her while she laid in bed. As she looked at the fish swimming, she wished one day, she could swim like them too but somehow she felt that the day might not come.
