Change have been always present especially in the 21st century where modern technology is already as significant as the oxygen that we inhale. This continues growth and development in technology only makes us, humans to desire greater and faster machines. These demands eventually affect the manufacturing industry. Therefore, manufacturers have had to find a way to keep up not only with the demand for products but also with finding skilled workers to make these products.

Technology in the workplace has helped workers become more efficient than ever before. One example is the application of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), that made manufacturing industry became more efficient. Instead of manually tracking problems, a machine handles all of this remotely, increasing productivity. The impact of technology on work, both in manufacturing and in communication, has exponentially increased the rate of production and speed at which business occurs. But these advancements have a profound impact on the manufacturing workforce.  Qualified applicants for skilled or highly skilled positions that could manufacture and design products would be unfulfilled due to the skills gap that humans can’t efficiently make unlike machines. Technology and manufacturing are changing from what was once a blue-collar workforce to a highly trained white-collar profession that make jobs more lucrative than before.

Above all, technology has improved working conditions. Its impact on the work environment has modernized monotonous and environmentally wasteful processes, expedited access to work while exponentially increasing productivity and made working from anywhere easier than ever.

Is technological literacy important?

As an Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering student living in this modern generation, technology is something that I actually depend on in almost every second of my life. In whatever I do, technology and its powers to make my tasks and even desires are a treasure that I could not imagine my life living without.

Living in the twenty-first century requires us, humans, to be technologically literate in order to cope up with the never-ending advancement of the world. Technological literacy enables humans to perform daily tasks and supports the ability to make responsible decisions that affect them as individuals, society as a whole, and the environment. One of the obvious benefits of technological literacy is in the economic realm. A technologically literate population would, for example, understand that science and technology are the foundation of our economic strength and would be more likely to support the research, education, and economic policies that support that foundation. Conversely, technologically literate citizens would be less likely to support policies that would undermine the technological basis of the economy.

Therefore, it is our responsibility to ourselves, to the society and to the world to be knowledgeable and updated of what’s going on around us.

Trivia:

In an age of exotic materials, why is wood (one of the oldest materials) still valuable?

Despite newly developed materials such as concrete and steel, wood had remained as top among others. It is actually one of the longest standing building materials in existence, with evidence showing homes built over 10,000 years ago used timber as a primary source for construction materials. Wood is still utilized today because of its amazing characteristics. Wood lets us reduce, reuse and recycle. Through our innovative ideas, wood allows us to optimize and reduce waste and even excess materials of wood could be recycled for other projects. Unlike other materials, wood does not deplete the earth of its natural resources that makes wood as a renewable material. Also, wood contains carbon footprint that’s 75% less than that of concrete or steel that buys to be a contending material for green builders.

Wood have served an important role in construction and other manufacturing industry mainly because of its availability and is very eco-friendly.

So that's it! I hope you've got something in this article.

Yes, its amazing how fast the evolution is changing in this modern era, however we must be reminded that we are the humans, we are the rulers of this world that is why everyone must be informed and knowledgeable toward this rapid change in materials and manufacturing so that the workforce won't go down.
