The Philippines is an archipelago,an area that contains a chain or group of islands scattered in lakes, rivers, or the ocean. That's why some of our country's provinces or municipalities are usually surrounded by different bodies of water and can only be reached by boat, like the famous Boracay island.

Here in the province of Ilocos Sur, a lot of its municipalities are also surrounded by different bodies of water. Some municipalities and baranggays as well are surrounded by rivers, and oceans. Just like one baranggay in the municipality of Caoayan, Brgy. Puro.

Brgy. Puro is a very beautiful island barangay situated at the mouth of Abra River to the South China Sea. The residents here are mostly fishermen. Some are engaged in farming with the small parcel of land they own.

To reach Puro, you have to stop over at Brgy. Pantay Tamurong in the same town of Caoayan and ride with a boat. (The boat is owned by a family friend so we did not pay any rent, but the rent would usually cost 25php per person.)

With the beautiful view of the Cordillera mountain ranges while taking this branch of Abra River, you can not feel the scorching heat of the sun as you traverse the river because the air is cool and you will forget every worry because of the wonderful view.

This river is a branch of the great Abra River that undeniably creates a wonderful view as it blends with a perfect silhouette with the mountain.

Once you reach the island, boats are seen alligned with each other as they serve as the main mode of transportation in the said barangay.

The water level in the island is perfect for kids since its not deep making it safe for them for swimming.

Despite the island to be a promising tourist destination, Puro is still lacking in lot of things, especially when it comes to health services. Puro does have a rural health center but there are no doctors available. So in times of emergency, they must travel across the river to get to the town proper. So having your own boat is a must in this place. Another issue that this island is experiencing is that the land mass is gradually decreasing making it difficult for the residents. But,residents here especially those who have been staying in this area for a long time doesnt want to leave the place for they know that the island will stay on the map of the municipality.

I know that with the help of the government, Puro will always be a part of Caoayan. And time will also come that the place will be recognized and would be given proper attention that would help its residents.

Let's support local attractions!

Philippines is indeed a promising archipelago. It's just disappointing that our own leaders don't do much about it
