1990s is an interesting era in music. As we entered the decade, we heard the vocals of great divas, the fame of grunge rock, punk rockers became popular, movie soundtracks topped the music charts, the new face of pop landscape, and of course, the boybands.
In this post, I'll be sharing my picks of the popular music artists of the 1990s from 11-20 (not in order), while you can check or read the first 10 artists in this post.
Boyz II Men
Boyz II Men was initially very popular in America with their first album "Cooleyhighharmony" going multiplatinum with top 10 hits already. They became a bigger group when "End of the Road" was released. It's actually from the soundtrack of "Boomerang", and eventually included for the re-issue of "Cooleyhighharmony". Their second album "II" became a bigger seller when it surpassed 12x platinum in the US alone. Three years after the release of "II", they came back with their third studio album "Evolution", which featured their last Billboard number 1 song "4 Seasons of Loneliness".
Shania Twain
Shania Twain had achieved global superstardom on her third album "Come On Over", which sparked further interest on her previous albums, "Shania Twain" and "The Woman in Me". Her second album eventually sold with estimate of 20 million copies. However, "Come On Over", released in 1997, brought country music to mainstream and global fame. It has been briskly selling great until the end of the decade, with total estimated sales of 40 million, one of the ten biggest selling albums of all time globally
Alanis Morissette
Started out as dance pop artist in Canada, Alanis Morissette became a rock icon in mid-90s through her first international album "Jagged Little Pill". The album is just one of the few albums which sold more than 30 million during the decade. However, interests in music by listeners changed, and when she released her second album "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie", her sales dropped but still managed to reach 3x platinum compared to the 16x platinum certification of her previous album.
TLC
The initial success of TLC through their first album "Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip" may have been limited to United States, it crossed the border through "CrazySexyCool", their second album. That album was certified 12x platinum based on shipments in the US. The group had undergone hiatus and bankruptcy. In 1999, they released "Fanmail" which produced the hits "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty".
Madonna
Being one of the most successful artists of 1980s, Madonna has maintained her stature during the 1990s. Of course, there are ups and downs but her sales cannot be undermined during the decade. The release of her compilation album gave her more than 30 million of sales from it alone, as well as the reinvention to electronic pop through "Ray of Light", her best selling studio album during the decade. Fourteen of her singles released during the 1990s reached the top 10 in Billboard Hot 100.
U2
U2 is one of the artists which achieved success from the 1980s, 1990s, and even 2000s. During 1990s, they released three studio albums with "Achtung Baby" as their biggest seller estimated around 18 million copies sold, and similar sales for their 1998 compilation album "The Best of 1980–1990" Two other albums went number 1 namely "Zooropa" and "Pop".
Bryan Adams
Bryan Adams' most successful album especially internationally is considered "Waking Up the Neighbours", which has sold with estimated 16 million, and followed by two underperforming yet multi-million selling albums. He also released his compilation album "So Far So Good" with sales around 13 million. He scored multiple global hits during the decade including "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You", one of the biggest selling singles of all time.
Elton John
Elton John had huge success already in the 1970s and 1980s, while it went on in the 1990s. He had released a number of studio and compilation albums which sold multi-millions. But his most notable release is the soundtrack of "The Lion King", which went 10x platinum in the US. He also scored worldwide number 1 hits including "Candle in the Wind 1997", which is the second biggest selling single of all time (physical sales).
Michael Bolton
Michael Bolton's huge success came in 1989, which went on until the 1990s with four multiplatinum albums including the greatest hits. His most successful record is "Time, Love & Tenderness", which went 8x platinum in the US. He had 6 Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles.
Ace of Base
Ace of Base is one of the most successful music groups from Sweden. Their fame came with the hits "The Sign", "Don't Turn Around", "All That She Wants", and others. Their album "The Sign/Happy Nation" is one of the biggest selling albums globally with 21 million estimated copies. "The Bridge", their second album is also a multi-million seller but with underwhelming sales compared to their debut.
