On 26 January 1979, Bank Negara Malaysia issued a 1 Ringgit commemorative coin in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). The coins are issued in two types, 1 Ringgit Copper-Nickel coin and 1 Ringgit 925 silver proof coin. These coins are legal tender and minted at Birmingham Mint, UK.
The front of the coin displays the building of Bank Negara Malaysia's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and the Central Bank of Malaysia logo in the middle and the "1959-1979" under it.
The backside features a $ 1 RINGGIT symbol in the middle of it surrounded by the word "BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA" and "dua puluh tahun" mean 20 years in Malay .
