On August 30, 1977, Bank Negara Malaysia issued a 20th Anniversary Ringgit Merdeka commemorative coin in conjunction with Malaysia's 20th Independence Day. The coins are made of Cupro-Nickel metal and are legal tender. The coin is issued in 2 types, proof, and non-proof.
The front of the coin displays the portrait of Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong Malaysia. The portrait is surrounded by the word "TUANKU ABDUL RAHMAN" on the top and the word "MALAYSIA" at the bottom.
The back of the coin also features the National Coat Symbol in the middle of the coin and the "1957-1977" on it. The country is surrounded by the word "20 YEARS OF MERDEKA" at the top and the value of the coin at the bottom.
