ENGLISH

WHAT IS HEARING?

It is the propagation of sound waves from our ears, passing through the external and internal auditory canal, colliding with the eardrum to make it vibrate and this vibration generates movements in the chain of ossicles of the middle ear; all this produces stimuli in the nerve endings of the inner ear, which subsequently translates into the perception of sound. A somewhat long process, but, that happens in a matter of seconds.

WHAT IS SOUGHT TO CELEBRATE THIS EPHEMERIS?

With the intention of raising awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss, as well as promoting ear and hearing care worldwide, International Hearing Day is celebrated every March 3rd.

The aim of this type of initiative is to:

- Raise awareness among all people about the importance and care of the hearing apparatus.

- To motivate them to have their hearing checked regularly and to adopt healthy practices for the care of their hearing system.

WHY IS IT CELEBRATED EVERY MARCH 3RD?

The date was established by the World Health Organization and its choice has to do with the fact that the day and the month (March 3 - 3/3 -) emulate the shape of two ears facing each other.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN CAUSES OF DEAFNESS?

- Chronic ear infections.

- Vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles, rubella, etc.

- Lack of oxygen during childbirth.

- Excessive noise.

- Abuse of certain medications, e.g. gentamicin, streptomycin, etc.

- Aging.

TIPS TO PREVENT HEARING LOSS

- Keep ambient noise at low levels.

- Regulate the volume of devices while using hearing aids.

- Periodically visit a specialist (ENT specialist).

- Do not manipulate the external ear with any object.

- Avoid and treat ear infections.
