Flipstarter next step: easy to deploy, same user experience

After the Flipstarter node campaigns, we mentioned three good next steps:

  1. Easy deployment

  2. User experience (UX) improvements: low-hanging fruit

  3. UX improvements: moving to smart contracts

About a week ago, Corentin Mercier, a well known web developer in the BCH ecosystem, made a proposal to accomplish step 1: easy deployment. We reached out to potential campaigners including all the active nodes to make sure this proposal would provide as much utility as possible to the next generation of campaigners.

How easy?

To quote Corentin's proposal:

  • Visit the flipstarter.cash website and click "deploy to heroku"

  • Create an account and wait for the app to get deployed

  • Click "open app"

  • Fill in your campaign's information

  • (optional) Add your custom domain name in Heroku's app settings

Please remember, you will need to use your own domain (for example MyCampaign.herokuapp.com or MyCampaign.com. Flipstarter is not planning to host any further campaigns directly on the flipstarter.cash domain.

I want to pay someone to do it for me

In addition to improving the code to be easily deployed, Corentin also plans to offer no-hassle campaign deployment for a reasonable fee. Other people are welcome to offer this service as well. Flipstarter will not promote any particular service.

How do I get people to support my campaign?

Hard work, good communication, trust, marketing, and more. It is not easy. You can read one of our old articles which has a basic outline.

Same user experience

This is only step 1 of the improvements for Flipstarter. It improves the situation for campaigners and it will have the same user experience that we have today. Once everything is easily accessible, then work can begin to improve on the user experience. If you think you can accomplish steps 2 or 3 or if you have other ideas for improving Flipstarter, we welcome your participation, and especially proposals. Please join us on the Flipstarter telegram.

Thank you

Thank you to Corentin for making a specific proposal including a budget and deadline. Thank you to everyone who has provided constructive feedback for Flipstarter so far. The cost of this proposal will be covered 50% by BCH Node, who has a mandate in its budget to develop Flipstarter capability that benefits its own deployment, and the rest by Flipstarter funds from generous donors. We are looking forward to a new generation of campaigns.

Keep up the great work! Kickstarter looks set for a very bright future! The node/50% arrangement is great. If you have some BCH spare consider supporting too!

Outstanding work Corentin, awesome you stepped up for this. We need more people to step up.

That said, until the limit on ~650 transactions per flipstarter is solved, I don't see this being a tool for the masses to crowdfund, or "fair-fund", BCH growth. Even just a USD$10,000 flipstarter means the minimum pledge is ~$15.

Yeah sure, we can hope that a whale comes along and gives enough to reduce that to say $1, but then we're right back to square one, hopin' and prayin' for whales to shower manna on us from heaven.

I also find it questionable that people donated to BCHNode for protocol development and funds are being spent on something other than protocol development. Big question mark right there.

But... George ... I don't understand... Are you working for ABC ad honorem? Are you being paid for your work?

Are you an expert in protocol development? I understand you are not.

I think the people who donate money to ABC do it to make ABC work on protocol development ... And since you're not a protocol developer, then you should work for free.

George, it's not anyone else' fault that you can't read the BCHN proposal, which contains extensive sections about developing and deploying fundraising infrastructure. Please stop embarrassing yourself.

I read it and took note of it at the time. I still find it questionable that a protocol development team is spending scarce funds on things that are not protocol development.

Is this questioning a hangover from the IFP days, where ABC wanted to dictate how funds could be allocated to others?

Obtaining funding is part of the activities of most protocol development teams, no?

Investing in good tools to accomplish this is just as necessary as investing in other development tools and resources.

So, you are spending money you raised for protocol development in raising more funding for "protocol development". That's a cute trick.

The money raised was not for generic "protocol development".

The money raised was for the commitment outlined in the proposal.

I keep getting the impression that you didn't reach BCHN's proposal, so I'll link you to it:

As you can see, only a minor part of their funds are directed at establishing a crowdfunding presence.

BCHN is not the only team who recently got successfully funded which plans to keep themselves going through further fundraising as they deliver on their plans.

That's very good, you are sticking to your talking points. George Donnelly is a slave, an NPC, illiterate, technologically a know-nothing. /s

I read it within days of its release and I highlighted the part on flipstarter funding due to its questionable nature.

Here we are fighting to fund infra and you guys spending scarce infra funds on a questionable non-protocol tech that relies on whales to make it work for PR purposes.

Hey, your call. I just call 'em like I see 'em.

I keep getting the impression that you didn't reach BCHN's proposal,

This is where you implied something that falls right into line with the talking points I referenced, talking points I have been getting hit with for weeks, false talking points which consist of nothing more than ad hominem, ie attack the man instead of discussing the issue at hand.

If you didn't keep making false claims that can be refuted by anyone willing to read up, then maybe people would not have to call you out and maybe you would'nt feel so "attacked" all the time.

Consider making a positive change.

I'm not sure if this counts as one false claim, or four.

And it's not questionable that a node team hires someone fired by a competing cryptocurrency to attack fellow node teams developing useful things, without being accountable to any written budget?

I was not fired, I quit. http://morelibertynow.com/what-happened-with-dash/

You clearly have not taken the time to inform yourself, have no answers and are falling back on ad hominem, ie attacking the man instead of the argument, which is your natural pattern it would seem.

Attacking? I am expressing opinions, offering feedback and asking questions. Is free speech not acceptable in BCHN-land?

Surprise! I actually read things!

was enough to suddenly end our funding one month into an approved three month proposal.

This is from your own linked article, dude. Is this one of those "I wasn't fired, I actually quit" things people do a lot to save face? I mean, we can call it a "layoff" if that makes you feel better...

I could have submitted another funding proposal for a smaller amount, and I chose not to. And then I gave interviews about how I was leaving Dash for BCH.

You attempting to talk about things you have no first-hand knowledge of is just a bad look.

I also find it questionable that people donated to BCHNode for protocol development and funds are being spent on something other than protocol development.

As far as I understand, people who donated to BCHN via flipstarter did so for them to take on the commitment they outlined in their proposal - not for "generic protocol development".

It's fine for you to disagree with their choice to do this, and raising your concern so that others can take that concern into account. This however, doesn't seem like raising a concern as much as it looks like an uninformed complaint at best, or a deliberate attempt to undermine credibility at worst.

Do note that some people (me included) are reacting to how it's being presented, not the concern itself.

I thought it's pretty clear from reading the article.
