I don't love them, no more: Fruits Edition
They say, as we grow old we mature, and I couldn’t agree more with that. Through our experiences, we learn and some gave us a life-changing moment too.
But as I get older, I noticed that I don’t only change with my attitudes, my viewpoints in life, but also with the food I chose to eat or taste. This means there are foods that I do not eat before that I love presently, my tastebuds just changed too.
But this time let me share with you the foods I used to love when I was a kid that I can’t give a bite to today.
These foods I will mention in this writing or specifically fruits were once my favorites but today, they’re not on my list anymore.
Guava
I know some of you love this fruit, most of my relatives love this too and every time they offer me some slice of their guava fruits, I always refused. They wonder why, but honestly, it has a certain reason why I started to reject this fruit which I used to love as a kid.
When I was a kid I am fond of climbing the guava tree beside our house, it bears lots of fruits yearly, some, my friends, and my cousins were fond of picking fruits from the tree. Almost every guava season we never missed getting some fruits for ourselves. We even fight over the ripe fruits if there were only a few left.
But one time, I am one of the unfortunate kids who picked a guava fruit with a worm. As I bite the fruit, I saw a wiggly tiny creature on it. I threw it out of shock and after that incident, I never dared to eat guava until today. No matter how I wanted to try to have some, I will just remember the wiggly creature and it gives me trauma.
Another thing is when I was in my third year of high school, I have a seatmate who was always a center of backstabbing in our classroom. And she likes to be with me because I don’t tease her, I don’t really know why my classmates always make fun of her. Until one day, I smell something strange, it smells like guava. Then I asked my seatmate if she brought guava with her because the odor was strong.
Seriously, she walked out as my classmates laughed so hard, I never realized that the smell was coming from her, on her armpits. I have no idea that time that my classmates called her “amoy bayabas” or her body odor smells like guava. After I knew everything, I felt guilty but I considered myself innocent.
Cape Gooseberry or Tino-tino
I was eight years old when I first tasted this fruit. It’s small, looks like a berry inside, and can be found on the grasslands. My cousins introduced me to this fruit they called “tino tino”, at first I was scratching my head if it was a fruit, but my cousin showed me how to open the fruit and then ate it without hesitations. So, I was convinced to eat it too.
Those times, my cousins were still residing a bit far from our house, so every Saturday and Sunday, the father will drop me by their house and then fetch me at 4 pm. And all we did there was play around, explore and look for these tiny fruits.
But then, as I aged, I find its taste weird. It’s really weird until my appetite won’t accept it anymore. And every time I remember that I ate it, I will just ask myself why on Earth did I do that?
Talisay Fruit
Are you familiar with this so-called Talisay Nut? As a kid we used to call it “mani-mani”, mani is the Tagalog term for nuts. Every time we saw a brown Talisay fruit on our paths we will immediately pick them up and crushed the outer shell so we could get the nut inside.
At first, our uncles were confused why we were searching everywhere for Talisay fruits, they even said we might get poisoned. But I don’t know we just do it almost every day. We even introduced the nut to our friends and they joined us too. But as time goes by, I rarely see such fruit in our place, I just wonder why we could always see the fruit when we were young, but in today’s generation, I couldn’t have a glimpse of the fruit once again.
Camachile
It was very popular during my youthful years, there was once a camachile tree in the neighborhood and I am one of those kids who picked the fruits to consume. The good thing is, the owner just let us pick the fruits because their family isn’t eating the said fruits. For me, the texture of the fruit was a bit rough and it doesn’t taste sweet, however, I am fond of chewing the fruit.
But as I grow up, I never get excited whenever I see camachile fruit anymore. I don’t know exactly the reason but I just don’t want to eat the said fruit anymore nor give it a bite.
Chesa
This one for me was very memorable. My cousin and I never likes chesa fruit, but when we started to hang out on the fence near one of our neighbor’s houses, everything was changed. Our neighbors who lived there were two old maidens. One has a deformity, probably she has scoliosis, while her older sister took care of her until they get old. Other children in the neighborhood were scared of them yet we never get scared because we knew they shouldn’t be scared of them.
Then one day, they called us to visit their house. At first, we refused because we were busy playing in the guava tree. But then, the two old women insisted, so we just nod our heads. I guess, among the children in the neighborhood, we were the two lucky girls who have entered their house. Their house was made of light materials, woods particularly, but was presentable.
As they offered us a seat, we just simply followed what they instructed us, then they served us chesa fruits. We refused because we didn’t like it. But they said it’s healthy and good for our health too because the fruit was packed with vitamins. So, we gave it a bite and then we liked it, then everything just started to get nice. The two old maidens were so happy that we were so talkative, they shared their stories with us, and how they felt sad that the kids were afraid of them.
Until every afternoon for about two weeks, we found ourselves laughing with them while eating chesa fruit, however as time goes by, we got tired of the taste of the fruit. Our tummy got tired of the taste of it that we couldn’t swallow it anymore. So we decided to give excuses, we never hang out on the fence anymore but we maintained the good relationship between the two olds until they moved out to another residence.
Until today, I couldn’t forget that chesa fruit, and every time my cousin and I saw chesa fruits, we just laughed and act like puking. Seriously, I will never eat chesa fruit ever again, until this very moment, my tummy and my mind are refusing. Lol!
I still have lots to share with you but I guess it’s too long now so I will just end it here.
But honestly, while typing this, I am smiling from the top until the bottom of jotting down those experiences. Then I realized how we were so innocent those days, imagining eating weird and strange fruits without thinking twice. What if some fruits have poison on them, but we’re just lucky we had eaten edible fruits and surprisingly healthy ones! Lols!
How about you guys, have you tasted the fruits I mentioned above too? Or do you have any fruits you used to love but today’s a no-no for you?
Share with me your stories too!
