Energy efficiency labels Vs Prize tags: why are both important ***– Energy efficiency labels –*** If you have recently bought a home appliance like a dishwasher or a washing machine you most probably know what an energy label is. https://ec.europa.eu/info/energy-climate-change-environment/standards-tools-and-labels/products-labelling-rules-and-requirements/energy-label-and-ecodesign_en If not, you must know that the energy efficiency labels aim to be a clear and simple indication of the energy efficiency of product at the point of purchase. The ratings on the energy efficiency labels go from A+++ to D (A+++ being the most efficient and D the least efficient). Those ratings are defined by the EU for each type of appliance (e.g. fridge, tumble drier,…) through a number of different tests and criteria. This means the ratings can only be compared between one type of appliance (e.g. fridge to fridge). ***– Prize tags –*** And, well, when it comes to the prize tag, the more efficient the appliance the bigger the prize will be. This is because the energy efficient appliances use less electricity and water than those less efficient appliances. ***– The dilemma –*** The dilemma is: Is it really worth to buy a more expensive but also more efficient appliance or should I buy the less efficient but more economic appliance? The answer is: Depends on how high the prize tag is. Let’s have a detailed look. Buying and energy efficient appliance: Payback period You have to choose between two fridges: – **Fridge A**: It uses 252 kWh per year and it has a prize tag of 899 euro – **Fridge B**: It uses 174 kWh per year and it has a prize tag of 1159 euro Fridge B it is more efficient but also 260 euro more expensive that Fridge A so, which one do you choose? The only way to make an informed decision is to figure out how much electricity you would be saving per year by choosing fridge B, and then calculating how many years it will take for those savings to compensate the initial extra 260 euro. We know that we are paying 0,217 euro per kWh (do you know what a kWh is?) so for us that means that https://effiworkx.com/blog/what-is-a-kilowatt-hour-kwh/ – **Fridge A** will have a yearly electricity bill cost of 252 x 0,217 = 54,7 euro – **Fridge B** will have a yearly electricity bill cost of 174 x 0,217 = 37,8 euro For us, there is a difference of 16,9 euro per year on electricity cost between the A+++ and the A++ fridge. That means that **if we buy the A+++ we will be paying an extra 260 euro but we will be recovering that amount due to the lower electricity bill within 260/16,9 = 15,4 years…** Well, in this case the payback period it is far too long because nowadays a fridge does not last 15 years. That means that for us it makes more sense to buy the cheaper and less efficient fridge. Dishwasher Vs Hand Washing: Save electricity, water and time? **We have an energy efficient dishwasher that we use efficiently and it only consume 0,15 euro in electricity and 0,024 euro in water per load.** Note that here the most important keyword it is EFFICIENT. Our dishwasher it is an ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCE that we have learnt to USE EFFICIENTLY by learning what cycle consumes less energy and water. For us it is a much better option to use the dishwasher rather than washing the dished by hand because **we are saving a considerable amount of time by using the dishwasher while saving water and not significantly increase the electricity cost.** Still, every case is different so we are going to show how you can find out if you are saving money, time and effort by using the dishwasher or if it makes more sense for you to clean your dishes by hand. Dishwasher Vs Hand Washing: Electricity consumption ***– Dishwasher –*** Our dishwasher, like any other dishwasher, has several cycle options. We have measured every cycle power consumption using a plug in power meter so we can know what cycle is the most economic. The results are displayed on the table below. It takes 3,5 hours to complete the cycle, but we leave it working overnight so this is not an issue for us. ***– Hand washing –*** But, how much electricity would we be consuming by heating the amount of water needed to clean the plates by hand? Well, first we need to know how much water we are using for cleaning the plates by hand and then calculate how much energy in kWh our boiler uses to heat that amount of water. By washing the dishes by hand and measuring the water consumption, we know that **we use 14 liters of hot water to clean by hand the same amount of dishes that we can fit on our dishwasher.** It is difficult to find out how much does it cost to heat up 1 liter of water but out of doing some research we estimate that it takes 0,05 kWh. As we are paying 0,217 euro per kWh, that means that **it does cost us 0.1519 euro to heat up 14 liters of water**. ***RESULT*** Energy wise, it does cost us the same to clean the dishes by hand or by using out dishwasher. Even assuming that we are using the dishwasher 20 times a month (this estimation takes in consideration vacations) we are saving a meager 0,5 cents a year by using the dishwasher. Dishwasher Vs Hand Washing: Water consumption ***– Dishwasher –*** We have measured the amount of water needed by our dishwasher to complete a cycle. For this, we just started a cycle and checked on the water meter the amount of water consumed from start to finish. As we know that we are paying 2 euro per cubic meter of water, we can easily calculate the water cost. The results are shown on the table below. We have an efficient dishwasher so it consumes very little water. For that, we will also check on our water meter the amount of water consumed from start to finish. The results are that **we are consuming 12 liters of cold water and 14 liters of hot water to hand wash the dishes**. Let’s not that we have tried to use as little water as possible. Water wise, it does cost us just an extra 3 cents more to clean the dished by hand. Assuming that we are using the dishwasher 20 times a month (this estimation takes in consideration vacations) we are saving 7,2 euro a year on water by using the dishwasher. Also, from the environmental point of view, we are saving 220 liters of water per month, or 2640 liters of water per year. ***RESULT*** Water wise, we are saving water and money by using the dishwasher rather than washing the dishes by hand Dishwasher Vs Hand Washing: Time consumption ***– Dishwasher –*** It takes us around 5 min to load the dirty dishes to the dishwasher and another 5 minutes to unload then dishwasher. This is, a total of 10 minutes per load. ***– Hand washing –*** To clean that same load by hand and then put back all the dishes to their place it takes us 30 minutes. ***RESULT*** As we are using the dishwasher almost once a day, that means that by using the dishwasher we are saving a total of 20 minutes per day that we can use for other activities. By estimating that we use the dishwasher 20 times per month (this estimation takes in consideration vacations), we can calculate a total saving of 400 minutes (or 6,6 hours) per month by using the dishwasher instead of cleaning the dishes by hand. This is 6,6 hours per month or **80 hours SAVED per year, well over three full days, by using the dishwasher.** Just note that it takes over 3 hours for the ECO cycle to finalize. Those three hours in any calculations because our time it is not being consumed. Dishwasher Vs Hand Washing: Supplies consumption ***– Dishwasher –*** For washing the dished at the dishwasher, we use one dishwasher tablet per load that costs around 0,13 euro per unit. Also, every month we need to use some dishwasher care liquid to clean the dishwasher and each bottle does cost us around 2,5 euro in supplies. ***– Hand washing –*** By washing the dished by hand, we need to have some dish washing liquid that it cost us around 2,5 euro per liter. Also we need a dish washing sponge that it cost us around 0,3 euro per unit. Assuming that we are using 2 sponges per month and 1 liter of dish washing liquid, washing the dished by hand does cost us around 3 euro a month. Assuming that we use the dishwasher 20 times per month (this estimation takes in consideration vacations), using the dishwasher does cost us around 5 euro in supplies. ***RESULT*** From the supplies perspective, the difference between hand washing or using the dishwasher it is nearly negligible. Conclusion From the direct costs perspective (water and electricity), it is nearly cost us he same to wash the dishes by hand or using the dishwasher. Still, **two other major factors they need to be taken in consideration**: – The cost of having to purchase an energy efficient dishwasher, which is approximately 700 euro – The time saved by not washing the dishes by hand, which is approximately 6,5 hours a month. Even though 700 euro seems like a big cost, if we assume that the dishwasher will last us for 5 years, using the dishwasher is taking out of our budget only around 12 euro per month. ***ALL IN ALL*** ***Using the dishwasher does cost us more money than if we would be washing the dishes by hand. Approximately an extra 13,5 euros per month.*** **Still, we consider that in our case, those 6,5 hours that we save every month by using the dishwasher are worth more to us than those 13,5 euro per month that we would be saving by washing the dishes by hand**. That time is better spent playing with our children, relaxing or writing this article. ______________________________________________________________ Still, every case it is different as you may need to clean the dishes more or less often than us. Do rechargeable batteries save money and reduce waste? Rechargeable batteries Vs disposable batteries: Is it really worth the hassle of buying a battery charger and charge the batteries when they run out of power? Is it not way easier to change an already discharged battery for a new one and just keep that expended battery on a box until you have time to take it to a collection spot? Well, disposable batteries may have both an economic and a environmental impact so **keep reading to know if in your particular case it is is worth to start using rechargeable batteries.** IKEA has recently made an announcement stating that: https://newsroom.inter.ikea.com/news/all/ikea-to-remove-non-rechargeable-alkaline-batteries-by-2021/s/bd0e6e55-ccc4-46d6-8b37-bb1f9dfa24ff#ref1 ‘ **Following IKEA’s commitment to inspire and enable people to live a healthier and more sustainable life at home, all non-rechargeable alkaline batteries will be removed from the global home furnishing range by October 2021.** **With this decision, IKEA wishes to inspire consumers who need to frequently use batteries to make a switch to rechargeable batteries.** **Regular use over time enables consumers to both save money and reduce waste at home.’** On the same announcement, IKEA mentions that: **‘Already after 10 charges of a rechargeable NiMH battery, such as the LADDA range sold in IKEA stores, greenhouse gas emissions are lower as compared to using alkaline batteries to obtain the same amount of energy.** **When about 50 charges are reached, the overall environmental impact** **[2]** **of NiMH batteries is equal or even less than the impact of using alkaline batteries.****[3]****‘** https://newsroom.inter.ikea.com/news/all/ikea-to-remove-non-rechargeable-alkaline-batteries-by-2021/s/bd0e6e55-ccc4-46d6-8b37-bb1f9dfa24ff#_ftn2 https://newsroom.inter.ikea.com/news/all/ikea-to-remove-non-rechargeable-alkaline-batteries-by-2021/s/bd0e6e55-ccc4-46d6-8b37-bb1f9dfa24ff#_ftn3 As well as: **‘ IKEA sold roughly 300 million ALKALISK alkaline batteries last year and estimates that discontinuing them could lead to a reduction of 5,000 tons of global waste if all customers switched to rechargeable batteries and used them at least 50 cycles (which is just 10% of the 500 charge/discharge cycles each LADDA battery is rated for).’** Well, from IKEA’s perspective, it really looks like that it makes sense to change to rechargeable batteries but let’s have a look to what is the economic and environmental impact for the average household. Is it worth to buy and use rechargeable batteries? A rechargeable battery it is roughly 4 times more expensive that a disposable battery and on the top of that we also need to buy a battery charger. Also, charging the batteries must consume some electricity so, does charging batteries increase our electricity bill? All those factors need to be considered as well as each one’s individual case. If you are an individual and you only use batteries for the TV remote control and maybe for your wireless mouse, then having to buy a batteries charger for the more expensive rechargeable batteries makes no sense. This is because maybe you will be using a pack of 8 batteries per year so the payback period would be far too long. In your case, from the money perspective, it makes sense to use disposable batteries Still, if as an individual you have a hobby (e.g. photography) that requires the frequent use of batteries, than it really makes sense to buy rechargeable batteries. On the other side, if you have one or more children at home you must know that many toys consume batteries at an alarming rate so in your case it is quite probable that you will be saving money by using rechargeable batteries. As shown on the picture above, it takes only 16 recharges to pay back the battery charger and the extra cost of having to buy rechargeable batteries. For some families, 16 battery recharges can take place over a single Christmas period… But, how much does it cost to recharge the batteries? This factor should be considered when deciding if buying rechargeable batteries it is worth, isn’t it? Well, personally I pay 0,217 per every kWh I consume and using a plug in power meter I have measured that charging 4 AAA batteries has cost me just over 2 cents. The environmental impact. According to a publication on The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment: **‘For the impact categories Acidification, Human toxicity (cancer effects), and Particulate matter, an “inefficient” use of the rechargeable devices (for only 20 charge cycles or less) could cause higher impacts than the employment of disposable batteries.** https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11367-016-1134-5 Additionally, in the same publication it is stated: **‘Moreover, for the Ozone depletion, NiMH batteries are hardly environmentally better than alkaline batteries even with 150 recharges.’** And as conclusions and recommendations, the following it is mentioned in the publication: **‘The number of uses of rechargeable batteries plays a key role on their environmental and energy performances. When compared to disposable batteries, a minimum number of 50 charge cycles permits a robust reduction of the potential impacts for all the analyzed indicators excluding the Ozone depletion. Hence, the use of rechargeable batteries should be mostly encouraged for high consumption devices such as cameras, torches, and electronic toys.’** Well, all in all we come back to the same situation. If you are an individual barely using batteries, it may actually not be environmentally friendly to buy rechargeable batteries. If you are an individual using a big quantity of batteries because you are into photography, or you have a hobby that requires many batteries, most probably you will be recharging the batteries 50 or more times within a few months. In your case, using rechargeable batteries you would be reducing your impact to our ecology. And, in the same situation, if you have small children at home and plenty of toys using batteries, from the environmental perspective it makes sense to buy rechargeable batteries. Conclusion It seems that the key factor to decide what type of battery is better for you it is the number of times you will be recharging it. If a rechargeable battery is disposed before going through 50 recharges, the environmental impact is greater than using disposable batteries. From the money saving perspective, if you are using a significant amounts of batteries per year, or even per month, it is really worth to consider to swap to rechargeable batteries.


How to build a simple DC motor at home After watching a few videos on the internet about how to build a simple DC electric motor, I though that this is something I could also do with materials that (mostly) I already have available at home. I have learnt two things: The first one is that, yes, most of the materials are readily available at anyone’s home but not all. The second one is that **without clear instructions it may take quite a few try and errors to get it done right**. In this posts we are going to show you the steps we have taken not only to get the materials to build the motor but also clear instructions about how to make one. Instructions and materials to build a simple DC motor at home As one image is worth than a thousand words, we have filmed three videos that should walk you through the whole process of getting the materials, preparing them and building the simple DC motor. Maybe, have a look to this video first and afterwards keep browsing through this post for additional details. https://youtu.be/9MXTmurYAGw To build the motor you will need the following materials: – A piece of cardboard (around 2000 x 700 mm) – One cork – One AAA battery – One magnet – Around 100 mm of copper wire from a standard cable. – Around one meter of ENAMELED copper wire – Glue And the following tools: – Pliers – Cutter – Scissors – Your hands Where from you can get a magnet to build a simple DC motor Magnets are used quite widely and, also, are thrown to the bin without most of the people being aware of it. I would say that most of the households have had some kind of musical toy thrown away to the bin during the last year. Or even some PC headset, or PC speaker, or some TV speakers,… All those devices that emit any kind of music or sound most probably have magnets inside that can be extracted and used at home. **To extract the magnets from toys it is a rather simple process but for the people who are not familiar with the process, we are showing how to do it on the video below**. https://youtu.be/yNzVcSOMsNY Where from you can get enameled copper wire Enameled copper wire it is not a material that can be recycled from old toys, an old printer or some damaged PC headset. The best place to get enameled copper wire is from motors so your best shot would be to find some old or damaged motor and extract the enameled copper wire. Of course , most of the households will not have any old or damaged motor around. But, if you are working on a place that uses or builds machinery, or you know someone who works in such a place, maybe it is possible for you to put your hands on one or a few discarded motors. **In the video below we show the process of extracting enameled copper wire from a discarded motor**. It is not that complicated to put such a motor apart an extract the enameled copper wire. https://youtu.be/2Dy_jawGoRQ Still, it may not possible for you to put your hands on a discarded motor so another way to get some enameled copper wire could be to purchase some (a couple of meters) from a local provider or even buying in on line. Other basic materials needed to build a simple DC motor Probably enameled copper wire it is the material most challenging to procure. Other materials like standard copper wire, cork, cardboard or some paper clips are readily available at home. The only material that may not be at everyone’s home it is the 1,5 mm copper wire rod. This kind of wire it is used for the houses electrical connections (at least in Europe). So there may be the chance to get some of this type of cable from any house undergoing renovation or new houses in construction from which the electricians may throw away some cable. If you don’t have at home some of this 1,5 mm copper wire rod and you don’t know anyone working as an electrician, the easiest way to procure some is from a hardware shop. Other materials like cardboard, cork or some standard copper wire from a cable can be easily found around most of the households. How to CORRECTLY build the coil for a simple DC motor Building a simple DC electric motor it is rather simple but there is **one very important step** that must be done right or otherwise you will finish with a construct that doesn’t work and you will not know why. Once you have made the coil, as shown on the video, **you must remove the enamel from ONLY the top half of each end of the wires** On the image below, the copper wire it is colored in dark orange and the enamel it is colored in light orange. As depicted, we have marked the area from where the enamel has to be removed ( ‘ Remove the enamel’) and as you can see we have to remove it from ONLY THE TOP HALF of each end. We have build the whole circuit over a 2000 mm by 700 mm piece of cardboard from a show box. We recommend that before start gluing the parts to the cardboard or even cutting the slot for the battery, that you mark all the locations first. Than will avoid you wrong guesses and mistakes. One more detail, we have made several coils of ten turns each and it has always worked well for us. Also, the coil has to be relatively close to the magnet. We leave around 5 mm between the coil and the magnet. Finally, note that if the coil is not well leveled or imbalanced, at it starts spinning the whole coil will start moving towards one side. This may cause for the coil to collide against one of the side poles and stop spinning. The science behind a simple DC motor **You have just built an electric circuit that takes the electrons from the negative side of the battery to the coil.** Those electrons pass through the coil, creating an electromagnetic field in the process, and return to the positive side of the battery. The process keeps repeating and the electromagnetic field created by the electrons while passing through the coil interacts with the magnet and creates the spin. While we have a closed circuit and the electrons are flowing through the coil, the coil and the magnet repeal each other. This is, the coil tries to move away from the magnet and starts rotating. But, as the coil start rotating, because we have only removed the enamel from half of the wire, the circuit opens because the enamel doesn’t conduct current and the electrons do not flow anymore through the coil. And, because there is not electromagnetic force and the coil is not repealed by the magnet anymore, it moves back again to a rest position. And the process repeats itself again and again creating a constant coil rotation, until the battery runs out of power. Or, also, to this electromagnetic coil explanation also at Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_motor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_coil Build a simple DC motor with paper clips It is possible to build a simple DC motor by using just some paper clips because the clips can also conduct the current from the battery to the coil. Paper clips are made of galvanized steel wire and they also conduct current, even though not as well as copper. For more information about conductivity, have a look to this page. Copper’s conductivity is much higher than the conductivity of the stainless steel. Still, the stainless steel conductivity it is enough to conduct the electrons from the battery to the coil. https://www.thoughtco.com/table-of-electrical-resistivity-conductivity-608499 Just be aware that this design it is very unstable and it will need quite a few tweaks to get it to work. This is because the clips will move, or the battery clips will not make good contact with the clips that hold the coil, or the coil clips will turn and block the coil from turning,… **I do not recommend to use paper clips for your first simple motor construction**, unless you have not any way to get some copper wire. Troubleshooting a simple DC motor Building a simple DC motor it is quite a straightforward process but when building one for the first time you may make some mistakes. It took me a couple of attempts to successfully build one. The first time I made one, I didn’t have the correct instructions and I removed the enamel from all around the wire (Remember, you just need to remove the enamel from the top half). Because of this, the close circuit open circuit interaction needed to create the spin was not present and the coil didn’t spin. Of course, if at any point there is not a good connection and the electrons do not flow from the battery to the coil or from the coil to the battery, the coil will not spin. I found this lack of good connections to be a recurrent problem to the simple motor I built using paper clips. The easiest way to troubleshoot most of the problems is to use a multimeter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimeter On the left picture below it can be appreciated how I measure the DV voltage at the rods that hold the coil. This way I can be sure that there is good connection all the way from the battery to the coil and the electrons are flowing from the negative to the positive side of the battery. https://www.fluke.com/en-us/learn/blog/digital-multimeters/how-to-measure-dc-voltage-with-a-digital-multimeter Also, on the right picture below it can be appreciated how I measure continuity between the both extremes of the copper wire I have used to build the coil. Energy efficient appliance payback period An appliance that uses less power it is going to consume less electricity and save money. There is nothing to argue here… But, is it worth to pay more money for an appliance that uses less power? For example, as shown on the image below, if you have to chose between a more expensive but a more efficient appliance (A+++/1159 Euro) or a more economic but less efficient appliance (A++/899 Euro), which one would you choose? Buying an efficient fridge payback period The payback period refers to the amount of time that it takes to recover an investment. The more efficient fridge (A+++) it is 260 Euro more expensive than the less efficient one (A++) but it uses less electricity, only 174 kWh per year, which is significantly less than the 252 kWh per year that the less efficient fridge will be using. If we want to know if buying the more expensive fridge it is a good decision, we need to find out how long it will take to recover those 260 Euro through electricity savings. Well, assuming a prize of 0,17 Euro per kWh, **it will take us 20 years to recover those additional 260 Euro that it will cost to buy the more expensive fridge**. The problem here is that it is very unlikely that a fridge will last for so long. Therefore, **at 0,17 Euro per kWh, buying the more economic but less efficient fridge it is the best choice**. Payback period calculator Of course, not everyone pays the same prize per kWh so in order to know if buying a more efficient but a more expensive home appliance makes sense, we need to run some calculations. How to look for heat leaks at home using a FLIR ONE thermal camera Probably the most effective method to reduce our utilities bills is to have a well isolated house. Heat losses can dramatically increase our gas or electricity consumption so for those who want to reduce the home energy costs it is very important to get to know how well isolated the house is and if there are any heat leaks. It may not be that straight forward to identify the source of heat losses but with a FLIR ONE thermal camera it is possible to identify any losses by just walking around the house looking at the images displayed on the phone screen. We have used the FLIR One Pro thermal camera to take the picture from the two buildings shown in the picture below. We know that the right hand side building is of recent construction and the left hand side building was most probably built over 20 years ago but it had the roof renovated recently. The thermal image and the heat readings from Spot 1 (9.1 degrees) and Spot 3 (11.4 degrees) clearly show what we can easily assume by just looking at the buildings, that the newer building’s elevation has lower heat loss that the older building. Still, the reading from Spot 2 (7.7 degrees) and Spot 4 (4.1 degrees) show that the old building’s roof performs better that the roof from the newer building. The owners of the older building have significantly improve their hear efficiency by renovating the roof and now they should consider to do the same with the elevation. For those of us who live in buildings which have been built recently, and efficient materials during construction, heat losses most probably will not be a problem but there always be room for improvement if we know where to look. Armed with our FLIR ONE Pro thermal camera, we have gone around our house looking for heat losses and we show the results in the video below. Through the imaged displayed by our FLIR ONE we could also notice that the underfloor heating was more active in some rooms than others but as we are living in a rented house we haven’t given it any major thought. Once you have accepted the house and made the payment, there is not way back… Apart from that, everything did look quite normal and the heat sources we could appreciate where all within what was expected. Some heat coming out the bulbs, from the kettle, from behind the fridge and from our daughter who was enjoying some cartons on the TV. But then we decided to come out of the house and have a picture from the outside to see if we could appreciate any heat loss though the door. The thermal read was not any clear and we could see some heat sources, in red, that didn’t make much sense but one spot on the lower left of the door seemed to be irradiating a higher amount of heat so we took a look and then, yes, we found a flaw. When the door frame was fitted, they left a gap between the frame and the floor allowing a draft to flow from where the heat was leaking towards the exterior of the house. That is why we had detected an unusual heat reading from outside the house. ll in all, it was an interesting experiment, even though this would had been a more productive if we could had conducted it in some older building or apartment block. But most definitely we will perform the same test if any time in the future we decide to move to a new property because we may be able to spot any construction defects or come to know how efficient is the property and how much money we will be spending in heating. Build your first website Hello Everyone! I am the web developer and content creator of https://effiworkx.com/ **On February 2019** I decided that I was going to create a website that was going to generate passive income for my family. **I had zero knowledge about website creation and I had never written a single line of content for any blog or article in my life**, but the will was there and that was enough. What is a Kilowatt Hour (kWh)? **The Kilowatt Hour (kWh) it is unit of measurement used to measure electricity consumption.** Therefore, for anyone really interested in knowing how much electricity is being used at home and what is the electricity cost, to know what a Kilowatt Hour is it is a must-to-have knowledge. As shown in the picture below, this household is using an average of 2700 kWh and it is being charged 0,2173 euro per kWh. Multiplying the 2700 kWh by 0,2173 per kWh gives us an electricity cost of nearly 600 euro per year. Let’s note that there are some fix costs that are also charged to the consumers. How to reduce your shower water consumption If your shower's water flow (water pressure) it is high, you may be using more water than necessary for having a shower. At home, we have tried two methods to save water while still enjoying a nice and relaxing shower. First we tried to install an Eco shower but the results were very poor, we were barely saving any water. It was a waste of money. Afterwards, we installed a flowing reduction valve and it has worked quite OK for us. A quite economic and easy to implement method to save water. My wife likes to feel the water pressure while having a shower, so she adjusts the flow to allow the full flow. I am not a 'fish' type, I am OK with having a shower at half flow so I am adjusting the water flow accordingly. The biggest saving comes when our small children are having a shower (or better said, when they spend time playing with the water...) because we are adjusting the water flow to the minimum so they can have their showers and have fun playing with the water. What is hard water and how to measure water hardness level When water passes through or over limestone or chalk deposits, chalk and magnesium ions dissolve into the water and it is their presence that makes the water ‘hard’. One of the most visual ways of knowing if your house has hard water it is by having a look to a kettle. If your kettle looks as the one as the photo on the right, you most definitely have hard water coming from your kitchen’s tap. Drinking hard water it does not pose a health problem so most of the people ignores the deposits on the kettle and keep it using for as long as it lasts, but as more and more scale accumulates on the heating elements the more inefficient they become and the more time and electricity is needed to boil the water. Before installing a household water filtration system, we were cleaning the kettle once a week. Since we installed the filtration system, three years ago, we haven’t had to clean the kettle even once. The effects on having hard water at home Hard water it also has some effects that are not that obvious as the accumulation of limescale on a kettle. Hard water builds up the pipes causing flow and drop pressure to drop and, if the accumulation continues for a long period, it may be even necessary to replace the pipes. Additionally, the hottest part of the house plumbing system are more prone to limestone precipitation so water heaters will be specially affected, leading to decrease of efficiency and by default an increase on the electricity usage.
