Happy Monday πŸŽ†

From my previous article, I shared the price of different products increased from the past few weeks.

You can read it here:

Maybe you've encountered one of a trending video regarding a man (he's an engineer I guess) that uses used cooking oil as a fuel for his car. He mixed the used cooking oil with diesel and used it as fuel for his car. He saved β‚±700+ doing this. It's been 2 years since he started using waste cooking oil and testified that nothing bad happened.

Is it possible?

There are a lot of studies that proves waste cooking oil, or even the Vegetable oil can be use as fuel. Some countries use this even in pure forms. However we should understand that it'll cause some problems with the engine. Cooking oil is much viscous than fuels (diesel). Meaning, it is thicker so the engine will have a hard time burning it (combustion) resulting to an unburned fuel which may clog the engine. It may be useful for now but not in the long run.

BUT, waste cooking oil as substitute for conventional fuel is POSSIBLE. A lot of studies proves its efficiency and of course it is eco-friendly and economical. We have to take note that it is better if this WASTE COOKING OIL is converted as BIODIESEL before using it directly on our vehicles. We can use a process called transesterification.

"Transesterification is the process in which fat or oil reacts with an alcohol to form esters and glycerol. A catalyst is used to improve the reaction rate and yield. Because the reaction is reversible, excess alcohol is used to shift the equilibrium to the product side."

Even McDonald's adapts this system, wherein they used their waste cooking oil as biodiesel to fuel their delivery services.

https://www.greenbiz.com/article/mcdonalds-recycle-cooking-oil-power-its-vehicles#:~:text=By%20converting%20the%20cooking%20oil

They collect this waste cooking oil from 900 restaurants in UK. This is one of the major challenge if we will apply it in the Philippines. The logistics, the source of waste cooking oil. The collection of the raw mats and facilitating it.

So to summarize, waste cooking oil can be a substitute to fuel. However, it is more effective if it is first converted to biodiesel than using pure or straight cooking oil that just undergo filtration.

Yun nga lang baka after few years (2 years is not that long, given na consistent ba na lagi may WCO yung ginagamit nya I dunno) sira na ang engine.

Yung lang thanks for reading!

Want ko lang rin mag share about the topic as a Chem Eng Student ☺️ but it's not 100% accurate, who knows super ganda ng sasakyan nya and kahit di na iconvert sa biodiesel is mag run till 10 yrs 😌

Ohh ginawan nyo to Ng study? because if you're on a research level with this one, mapapaiyak Ka na Lang with how much people say this study isn't feasible πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Hindiii ate pero it's been my interest since kumuha ako ng track spec about energy.

If we're basing on global fast food consumption Vs the oil usage. Usable and sustainable Naman kaso Yung eventual dilemma Kasi dito is the fact that people try to eat healthy na Kasi so eventually, it will be. A choice between food market needs Vs the automobile need. Then there's also Yung cleaning and removal Ng impurities plus Yung oil collection din Kasi less than 20% Lang talaga Yung documented na recycled oil. The rest just goes in the sink

I forgot na need din Ng engine modification for this cuz I remembered na this was like a Collab research we had with mech eng? And Kami Yung gagawa Ng biodiesel then sila sa trial. The unmodified engine clogged up and smoked up so ayun, it's medj Mahal din to modify their engines

Pero sabi sa net parang may na ano sila na ratio kung ilang percent yung wco and di na need i modify yung engine as long as it's diesel engine

I have read an article before na tungkol dito e I forgot kung saan or news ba yun. Pwede nga raw to.

Hm.... I actually wonder does McDonald's Malaysia does the same. However I think biodiesel is definitely workable on older cars while it may be a lot trickier with the automated new designed cars unless it is re-programmed for the engine to react to that.

it works even with new cars as long as it has a diesel engine, not sure with the automated ones though
