Humans are blessed intellectually. Especially when it comes to our health, we know just what we ought to do to hey better. And if we don't we seek the help of a certified professional. It might interest you to know that it's not just humans that are blessed with this unique ability. Animals themselves are capable of taking care of their health when they talk sick. Not only that they also engage in preventive healthcare, so that thei chances of falling sick is reduced to the bestest minimum. How do they do this? Journey along with me as we consider some examples of jungle doctors and how they go about the activity.

Often times, the ways animals treat themselves prove to be more effective than the methods used by man. A man recalls the experience he had with his little white-tailed deer. One day he saw that the deer had a deep cut, most probably by a barbed wire. In a bid to help heal the wound, he cleaned and bandaged the it. But the deer apparently knows better than it's master. It removed the bandage, licked hair away from the affected area and exposed the wound to fresh air and sunlight. In an unbelievably short time, the wound was healed. Animal tongues have antiseptic dressing, hence the enzymes in their saliva act as a natural germicide. This is something the deer knows more than it's human friend.

When animals are injured, they have the natural instincts tho diagnose the problem and figure out what they can do. Also, they know that different illness requires different treatment. Observe the following points.

  • When animals are injured, they will seek a quiet place where they can get enough rest.

  • If they have fever, they go to a place with sufficient air, shade and water.

  • Any animal that has rheumatism will stay under the sun, this way the sunlight will dry the heat and relieve it's pain.

Orangutans are usually affected with gumboil. When this happens, they know what they should do for a quick recovery. They will apply moist clay to the outer part of the affected areas, fill their mouth with clay as well and sun themselves. In no time the affected tooth will soften and remove on it's own.

When a Buffalo has scabs, which causes hair loss, it rolls in the mud for several days. It is also picky about the type it food it eats. It won't stop this treatment until it is completely healed.

How about Preventive medicine?

Animals practice preventive medical healthcare as well. One way they do this is by bathing regularly. They know that good personal hygiene helps in preventing a lot of illnesses.

Some furry animals do not get enough vitamin D in their diet and can be affected with rickets. So they occasionally lick their furs, because the action of sun on their furs produces vitamin D. Hence by licking themselves they take in a healthy dose of the vitamin.

When black bears come out of hibernation, they know that they are prone to illness because being out of condition for some time. To prevent falling sick, they eat berries and source for certain flower bulbs which help get them back into condition.

We often underestimate the intelligence of animals especially when it comes to healthcare. They really take good care of themselves, and humans need to observe them carefully and learn from them. If they can place so much value on good health, then we certainly need to do more.

We thank the doctors we have learnt fron today, Dr Deer, Dr Orangutan, Dr Buffalo and others. Indeed, the wild is full of certified doctors, that humans are jealous.
