Travel Bucket List: Sea of Galilee

I am a Christian and as such I am familiar with the Sea of Galilee from reading about it in the New Testament scriptures. However, I have never visited Israel and thus have never physically seen the Sea of Galilee. However, I am active on Tumblr and follow a blog published by a group of Jewish students who blog about the land of Israel. They shared this breathtaking photograph of the Sea of Galilee.

NOTES about the Sea of Galilee:

• The Sea of Galilee is Israel's largest freshwater lake.

• In the Old Testament this same body of water is called "Sea of Kinneret" (Numbers 34:11; Joshua 13:27).

• 1st century Jewish historian Flavius Josephus said that there was a thriving fishing industry and 200+ boats regularly worked in the lake.

• In modern times, the Sea of Galilee is a major tourist destination. Particularly, the point at which the water flows into the Jordan River attracts many visitors who profess to be believers in Christ and want to be baptized in those waters.

• In 2010, Israel's Ministry of Agriculture banned fishing in the Sea of Galilee because the water level was dangerously.

• Because the Sea of Galilee supplies approximately 1/4 of Israel's drinking water, in 2017, the Israeli Water Authority announced plans to replenish the Sea with desalinated water.

FUN FACT: In ancient times. there were three (3) types of fish mainly caught by fishermen: sardines; barbels; and musht (known today as “St. Peter’s Fish”).
