I love this book, especially the writer Marija Jurić Zagorka. One of the best, she’s so great and I always love her plots. Her books are amazing. So if you’re looking for books on a historical thriller, try out her works and I promise, you’ll never be disappointed. Definitely worth your time.

The Knight of the Slavonian Plain ”, a novel about a mysterious hero in the fight against bandit gangs ravaging Slavonia, is also interesting because it is the only novel by Marija Jurić Zagorka that was not set in Zagreb.
Zagorka allegedly had a lot of problems until she decided which historical events to use as the basis of her Slavonian novel because, as she noted, "Slavonia is not only fertile with natural fruits but also with rich material for novels". The novel takes place in the time of Maria Theresa, and is based on real historical events.
The plot of the story is based on real historical events set in the time of the still young Empress Maria Theresa, who is trying to unite the three Osijek municipalities. The plot of the novel is set in Donja Varoš, which was in Varnica's rule, Gornja Varoš and Tvrđava, as well as in other historically authentic environments, from bandit shelters in Čepin and Bijelo Brdo, to noble castles in Valpovo and Retfala. The central part of the novel consists, of course, of two love stories.
Slavonia was then ravaged by numerous gangs of robbers who often made life difficult for entire villages, smaller towns, and even aristocratic farms. Against them, and especially against the gang of the cunning, greedy and cruel Stojan Varnica, who with his band of robbers attacks on land and water and who imagined that he was the prince who conquered the country and now reigns in it. A relatively small company of heroes rises up against that robber. Their leader is hiding in secret so that the robbers would not discover and kill him by their spies.
Thanks to various masks and pyrotechnic tricks, he leaves a great fear on bandits, who, like the people, consider him a supernatural phenomenon, an elf knight.
After numerous plots of fighting, love and various intrigues in aristocratic castles, the knight, with the help of a girl, manages to capture Varnica and other bandit leaders and henchmen. They end up on the gallows, and the love of the girl and the knight is finally realized. We only find out the identity of the knight himself in the last few pages of the novel.
The novel is very popular and has been performed many times in a theatrical version on the stage of the Osijek National Theater.
