The Power of Small Things
The word small is often underestimated. Most often, we undervalue small achievements, small moments, and even small deeds that we do, or people do to us. I want you to have a short pause for a moment, breathe in, and breathe out. Think about this: Do great things exist without the small things?
In our world today, people are becoming fonder of using social media to share to the world almost everything about their lives. However, I’ve noticed that most of these posts and updates of people that we see online are composed only of big things – big achievements, big houses, expensive cars, and such.
I’m not saying that it’s bad to post these things because these people worked hard for it and they have the freedom to show it to the world how far they’ve reached in life. But there’s just this feeling of insecurity that we usually feel when we see things like those on the internet. It makes people feel less of their worth because they haven’t accomplished as much as others. There is this tinge of jealousy that lingers when we see people who have achieved so much.
As the world evolves, the standards of the society also change. Big things are becoming the norm and because of this, people are pressured to make or do something big also to fit in. That’s why most people are afraid or do not have the confidence of sharing their small achievements.
Believe me or not, the little things we do, even the smallest ones can make a difference. Instead of getting jealous or insecure about those big things, use it as an inspiration, make it a motivation for you to do big things too in your own little ways. Be the reason why you’re doing something impactful.
“I’m too small, I can’t do it”
As Teemo says, “size doesn’t mean everything” It’s not because you’re small, you can’t do things. There are a lot of things you can do that others cannot.
Think of something small like an ant. An ant may be small but can do a lot of big things. Ants have superhuman strength, in fact, they can carry something up to fifty times its body size, depending on the specie.
Think of a tiny seed. With enough water, sunlight, and love, that small thing can turn into a ginormous tree capable of doing big things for the society – they give shade, they provide oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, they also stabilize the soil preventing landslides and soil erosions, and they provide shelter to different wildlife.
The small things are bigger than you think they are.
We should not belittle the little things we do. We should not underestimate our achievements, no matter how small they are. These small achievements are small pieces of a puzzle that will complete a much greater success. Small things are steppingstones. Small progress is still progress. We should be proud of the little things we do.
Treat yourself even how small your achievement is. Celebrate small wins because you are amazing in your own way. Help other people in the best way you can, don’t worry how small it is, it still matters. Learning how to say small compliments means a lot, too.
Say thank you to those delivery drivers who hand you your parcels, say thank you to the waiters/waitresses who serve your food, say thank you to your groupmates or workmates for a job well done. Congratulate other people on their small wins, too. We should build an environment that makes us feel confident with the little things we achieved.
I love this article. Lot of lessons to learn especially in appreciating small things. What strike me most is to say thank you to someone who did small things to us. Be polite at all times.
