“Fitting in allows you to blend in with everyone else, but being different allows you to be yourself, to be unique, and to be more creative.” – Sonya Parker
A person’s sexual orientation can be classified through which gender he/she is attracted to. Some people are attracted to the opposite sex. These people are known as heterosexuals. Aside from that sexuality, the sense of being romantically attracted to the same sex can be distinguished as homosexuality. Gay is another term for homosexuals but homosexual men prefers to be called gay and women would be addressed lesbian rather than gay. On the other hand, bisexuals are the people that takes interest and attraction to both men and women. According to surveys, there are more women identified as bisexual than men. Women are substantially more likely than men to identify as bisexual.
Bisexuals contain greater part of the lesbian and bisexual population among the eight of nine survey conducted. Then again, gay men is significantly involved in the greater part of the gay and bisexual men in seven of the nine surveys. Transgender people feels like they were born on the ‘wrong’ body because their sex does not correspond to their gender identity. Sometimes, they undergo medical operations to fully change/transition to opposite sex. These people are called transsexuals. The lesbian, gays, bisexuals, transgender are the individuals that makes up the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community and there are LGBT youth who attends on Universities. The paper will be focusing on these individuals.
LGBT youths were frequently uncomfortable and awkward in schools because of their sexual character. These individuals are most likely to experience discrimination and they are also made fun for their sexuality. If a student will come out, chances of being discriminated and harassed becomes more likely. Sometimes this leads to violence.
The Philippines is ranked as one of the most gay friendly nations in Asia. The century ranked as the 10th most gay friendly in a 2013 global survey coverage. However, LGBT rights are limited and even though the country received quite a high rank in the survey, 39 countries which only 17 had majorities accepting homosexuality, the fact remains that discrimination remains. Gay men are referred to as ‘Bakla’ in Filipino. It is somewhat a way to discriminate an LGBT individual. It is used as a deregatory term referring to feeling inferior to a heterosexual individual. Most of the time the word gay was used in a negative way like "that's so gay". Various names were used to insult them such as "fag"or "dyke" and some were physically assaulted (punched, kicked or injured with a weapon) due to how they expressed their gender.
This suggests that a wide range of LGBT members experiences discrimination and violence despite the age. Which is wrong and should never happen if we are just open minded and more understanding. We are already in a modern era we should let go of being conservative drop those ideology that "boys should act like boys" or "man is for woman" that's sounds so homophobic. And besides they did not choose to be like that in the first place they are born like that. So let us make them feel that they are accepted, love and safe to hang around us.
