Located directly opposite The Pink House, the Cabildo looks across Plaza de Mayo as if one were at the head of the table and the other on the opposite end.

El Cabildo 1751

Built in the colonial days, this landmark is under repairs quite often. I lived close to it for many years. and it seems to only be free of scaffolding and work crews for short periods at a time.

It has stood the test of time, of 271 years to be exact, and was the place where the government was formed by the Spaniards. It was partially demolished as the streets were widened back in the 1800s and what was left of it was remodeled in 1939.

The building went into a cocoon in preparation for the 2010 bicentennial of Argentina's independence from Spain. The celebrations included soldiers with muskets on the balcony and reenactments of the changing of the guards.

This is the only building around the plaza that remains standing since colonial times.

This article is my own and the photos were taken by me.
