Like vs Respect

In this growing world, people are exposed a lot to the internet. It is rare to find a person that doesn't have a social media account and most people would do anything just to get the attention and likes they wanted.

Some would show too much skin just to get these likes and attention. I mean, I totally respect your decisions.

But I wonder, do you prefer to be liked? Or to be respected?

Because most people these days, forget the value of respect. They complain that people are not respecting them. Well, what do you expect from revealing too much skin? You don't gain respect on that. You get likes but people will disrespect you especially uneducated and narrow minded people.

There are people that like you but disrepect you. There are also people that respect you but dislike you.

Like is where a person finds you agreeable, enjoyable or just features you have that they like. It is just temporary and can easily be changed. You can also be easily forgotten because people tend to like a lot of things. Respect, on the other hand, is where people hold some feelings of deep admiration to you or something you have done. Respect can be there for a long time, unless you do something stupid to change how they look at you.

I find respect really important. If people respect you, even if they don't like you, they will not bother you and they will mind their own business. Compared to when people only like you but doesn't respect you, these people have a lot to say about you. I find the word like as a shallow thing that is breakable. They can insult you, betray you, talk about you and other disrespectful things.

BUT, WE ALL WANT TO BE LIKED.

Who doesn't?

As for me, I prefer to be respected but it is not bad to ask for more, it definitely is better to have a mix of both. Getting like by people boosts our self-esteem but earning the respect from people lets you live a healthy life with a piece of mind.

What about you? What do you prefer? If you only get to choose one, which would you choose?

I prefer to be respected of course. I don't even care if people like me or not. But what you wrote here is the sad reality of todays generation. A lot of people are losing even self-respect just to be trending and gain popularity or attention. This also shows that not all social media influencers are good influence.

Most influencers these days only care about money. So they try to be liked, try to gain more followers to become popular and sometimes others would just throw shade to anyone just to be famous. And all this for money. I feel bad for the children today

For me, if I were to make a choice in which picking if I want to be like or to be respected I would pick both. Why? Because I find these two words very compatible to each other. You can't say you like me if you don't respect me, right? For example, I like this food. And so, by saying you like the food you value its worth as an amazing food that suffice your taste and hunger. And the result, you respected it as an wonderful food. I like is this different from I want. When you mean you like something, if you meant it then you consider that thing precious. But when you say I want, it means that you're just want to satisfy your lust and desires. If you truly like something, then you truly respect it.

Well, good arguement, I respect your perspective on this topic but I cannot say that I agree on it. Respect is not really present on all things you like. Yes, you can like something so much making you respect it but there are also times were we can like something but respect is not really there. Let's have your example, say, a person likes this food and he is so excited to eat it. He eats it so fast and so messy (just like someone who hasn't eaten for weeks). He likes it but clearly doesn't show respect on the food he is eating. Same with a person, let's say I like this person's kindness to the point that i will abuse its kindness and use it for my own benefit. Obviously, there's no respect on that even if I like this person. Another one, a boy can like this sexy lady but will catcall her or touch her without her permission and fantasize her. He likes the girl but doesn't really respect her. Clearly, my point is, getting liked by someone doesn't always mean that they respect you hehe

If I only need to pick one, then I definitely want to be liked and not respected because you can also respect someone with fear but to like someone you have to love them!

Oh! I definitely get you there! Like when a kid respects his teacher because she decides for his grades but doesn't really like her because of her attitude and her teaching approach. Right! However, when you say to like someone is to love them. I respect your perspective but I don't really agree with it. As what I have also said on one of the comments, liking someone doesn't always mean that there's respect. Also, like is different from love. Like is way too unrelated to respect, whereas love is somewhat close to respect but still not on the same line. Say example, a boy can like someone's body. He appreciates it but he fantasizes deeply about it or he catcalls her. Others can even go to a point of being a pervert. That is like without respect. When you say love, we can love someone and respect them at the same time, but this respect can also be absent in love. Like how a boy can love his mother but disrespects her by talking back, getting ashamed of her or being violent to her. There are instances where there is love but no respect at all, usually the problem is with the person's attitude that has been there since he was a kid. But, with respect alone, it's different. I don't know, it's just my opinion hahaha I just find these words totally unrelated hehehe

Great post! I can't agree more with what you said. Respect indeed begets respect. Respect others, and others will respect you. Respect yourself, and others will respect you.

I would choose Respect all the time rather than Likes.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

In today's world, value judgement is changing rapidly and I'm not comfortable with the new virtues. People become insatiable attention seekers and their behavior shaped around this idea. Sad to say though...

Yes. And I blame all this to the influencers that serve as role models to the children today. Most of them are only after money that they don't notice people getting influenced by their wrong doings and foul attitude
