Meet Martha

Martha is a 17-year old young lady, who has been living with the distant relative of Magda's son-in-law. Magda became her guardian since 2019 after someone attempted to rape her.

Martha is 15, a highschool student. A very cheerful young lady, gifted with a fare skin with long black hair. She helps her parents take care of her younger brother. She lives in the middle of the field were only few families residing there and not their houses are not that close.

One night, she was walking home alone from school when a tricycle driver who happens to be her mother's 3rd cousin invited her to hop-in and that he would just drop her to their home and so she agreed. They were almost home when the tricycle stopped and immediately grabbed Martha's hand and take her out of the tricycle. Martha was shocked because he held her hand so tightly as if the driver has something bad in mind. Before Martha could even asked, the driver kissed her forcefully that made Martha got scared. She already felt that he has a bad intention so she gathered all her force and pushed him away. The driver fell on the ground and she run as fast as she could while shouting, 'rape! rape!

Her mother hurriedly and worriedly welcomed her, lead her home and closed their door. Martha sat on the floor with her blank emotion, still so shocked for what had just happened. Her grandma arrived and hugged her so tightly and that's when Martha burst into tears. She told everything that has happened and Martha's father immediatly reported it to the barangay and to the police station.

The furious grandma immediately searched for a scissors and cut Martha's hair into semi-bald. Yes, the long black hair she had been taking care off for the past years was totally gone. Martha cannot move, her face is so blank and it was terrifying as no one can't read what's happening and what's going on through her mind.

The grandma cut her hair because of a superstitious belief to avoid that kind of incident to happen again. Her father just covered her baldness with a cap.

The following day, there was a news that the driver was already arrested by the cops. Martha's grandma on the other hand wanted Martha to be safe and so she talked to Magda who happens to have her vacation in her son's town. She heard the story and without hesitation she said yes and brought Martha to her home. A 10-hour away from Martha's town.

When Martha arrived in Magda's place, some of their neighbors would ask why is she bald, what happened, is that really her hairstyle? But Magda would just say, she almost got raped so her grandma decided to cut her hair to avoid attraction or attention from boys. Magda enrolled Martha in the public school in their barangay. Treats her as her own daughter and supports her in many ways she can.

Sometimes, we don't need to be relative by blood so we can call someone a family. All we need is compassion and love.
