And we can be the guardians of the planet

Every year, Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22 in order to draw public attention to the importance of nature conservation, protection and prevention of negative impacts on the environment and the entire planet. This year is also a small jubilee: 50 years since it was celebrated. Earth Day was first marked on April 22, 1970. On that day, 20 million Americans (which was 10% of the American population at the time) protested, drawing attention to environmental pollution and stating the need for a healthy and self-sustaining environment. The protests were organized, independently of each other, by US Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin and activist John McConnell.

The senator witnessed a huge oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. Astonished by the extent of the pollution that arose at that time and the desire not to repeat such things, he came up with the idea to transfer the energy of student anti-war movements, which were very topical at the time, and draw attention to environmental problems.

It may be hard to believe today that the protests had to draw attention to the problem of soil, water and air pollution, but half a century ago, people's consciousness was just waking up on that issue.

Over time, an increasing number of people participated in the activities of the movement, so that in 1990 it became the most massive global movement covering 192 countries.

There are many reasons why we should ask ourselves how we can positively affect our environment and our home, planet Earth.

What can an individual do?

Start by changing small things that will, in turn, bring much greater benefits.

These are some small things we can all do.

- Replace classic bulbs with energy-saving CFL bulbs. This way you will save 66% of energy, plus you will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

- Raise the blinds, light helps to heat your apartment, and in this way you will save 10% of energy.

-Separate kitchen waste. Take it for recycling, but pay attention to one more thing - don't throw away food!

-Use natural materials .Cotton, wool or bamboo materials, not synthetics.

-Take the water while brushing your teeth or soaping yourself, boil the water so that you do not waste it unnecessarily. On average, 182 liters of water are consumed if you do not turn on the tap regularly.

- Plant plants common to your area. Plant or nurture plants that have a natural habitat in your garden, as this protects the local environment.

We in our settlement take care of the environment. There are people who throw garbage everywhere ... when the parks get dirty a couple of families with children go to work and clean everything up. This is how we teach children to take care of their environment. Every day is a day of small decisions that will mean a lot to you and future generations!

The average temperature on the planet Earth has increased in the past 100 years as a result of changes in the activity of the Sun and human activity on Earth. Primarily due to the greenhouse effect, which occurs due to the large emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere. The heat coming from the Sun falls on the Earth, is reflected from there and for the most part goes far from the Earth. However, an atmospheric envelope full of harmful gases retains solar heat, just as a greenhouse does. The result is an increase in temperature on Earth.

This vertical garden with 85,000 plants produces enough oxygen for over 3,000 people.

Santalaia is a building in the capital of Colombia that everyone who loves nature would like to live in. Namely, this facility is surrounded by a vertical garden of 3,100 square meters, whose lush vegetation is a real natural air filter that can purify more than 2,000 tons of harmful gases and capture more than 400 kilograms of dust per year. This system consists of a series of pillars where each of them has its own vegetative cover. In addition to a large number of common plants used in the formation of vertical facades, endemic species have also been used to enhance biodiversity.

It is very sad that because of sales and marketing promoting buy and throw items that doesn't last long for the sake of more profit has overcome the minds of many including millennials onwards (who are well verse with technology). Manufacturers have caved in to the demands of conveniences of hygiene shopping with packaging since the birth of plastics.

Food to landfills are also part of the environmental pollution especially from big manufacturers that over produce but not many people purchase.

All the best educating the readers, and we hope that there are more people walk the talk in the future.

Thanks for the comment. We need to be aware of the people. Every individual can do something for our planet.

They are destroying greenery in cities, they are just paving squares, parks. It is no wonder how many sick people we have.

We are very irresponsible. If each of us did only one thing, the world would be better and more beautiful.

This is very interesting, I like people who plant, harvest, recycle vegetable waste, make their own compost in the gardens. Little by little each activity helps to conserve the environment. In some countries they classify garbage, in my country there is no such awareness. That is why it is up to everyone to do what they can when it comes to throwing out their trash.
