The golden age of comics is considered the release of the first issue of the popular Superman. Namely, in 1938, Action Comics magazine first began publishing the adventures of this superhero.

A brief history of comics

Many comic book authors claim that the comics appeared a thousand years ago in America where pre-Colombian military leaders used tapes up to ten meters long to describe their conquests in detail. The comic originated in the early 19th century, although its forms appeared much earlier. The comic is part of an epic story from a pre-Columbian pictorial writing discovered in 1519 by Cortes . Comics in their present form appeared on the pages of daily newspapers in the United States in the early 20th century. The images in the sequence were joined by text in bubbles, balloons and more. The display of images and text developed slowly over time and became the comic we know in today's form.

The golden age of comics, as many critics and historians call it, begins with the release of the first issue of the popular Superman. In 1938, Action Comics magazine began to publish on its last pages the adventures of this superhero who is still one of the most famous heroes, the so-called heroes in leggings.

Characteristics of comics

In comics, the visual is crucial, everything that is visible should attract the attention of the audience. The types of comics are diverse, from sci-fi, adventure, humorous, historical, crime, love to horror and erotica. The roots of comics are actually of the humorous genre. Modern types arose from humorous creations, mostly caricatures, various jokes and jokes. Even today, short, mostly funny comics are published in almost all daily newspapers. They most often talk about everyday problems and the current situation in the country or the world, and are on the last pages.

realistic adventure comic appeared in the 1930s . This type of comic stands out with various descriptions of places, areas and most often signifies a person's dream of the future, a longing for simpler time and an effort to fit into the world in which he lives.

Action comics are the most popular

The theme of crime comics is the fight against injustice, criminals, the development of crime in the community and the like. The most popular is the action subgenre , which shows action heroes fighting for a better tomorrow . Good always defeats evil. Images and ideas vary from author to author, depending on their beliefs, interests, and attitudes. Some write exclusively simple comics, most of the pages are donated with pictures. Other authors include a plot that has some deeper meanings (sexism, feminism, help in distress, love tragedies, injustice in the world, and the like).

The elements of the comic are arranged in order. The first is the theme that marks the basic idea of comics, what comics are about. The following is a frame in which the theme of the comic is visualized along with the plot. It is actually a frame, and the classic order of displaying the image and text is from left to right. As with filming, the depiction of people, things and appearances in a comic can be in total, semi-total, close-up or based on some detail (facial expression, holding hands, tears flowing down the cheek, etc.). The combination of different types of shots makes the comic more interesting, keeps the interest of the readers and attracts more attention.

Comic book definition

Comics are difficult to define, especially because they refer to the medium itself, and not to a smaller part of it. It is not just a part of the literary genre that comes in a single edition. Comics are more than that, the art of succession, something that gradually builds, builds and develops.

McCloud in his book How to Read a Comic  says:

Comics are considered to be all drawings and other images opposed in a deliberate sequence, with the intention of conveying information or provoking an aesthetic reaction in the reader. Superheroes in bright colorful costumes, who in a series of violent, exciting and sensational action scenes fight against cowardly criminals whose only intention is to conquer the world.

Women in comics are virgins in trouble

Most of the comics are dominated by male characters , especially those in the lead roles. Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Alan Ford, Zagor, Captain Mickey and others. In rare comics, the woman appeared as a heroine and a heroine, and was mostly a virgin in trouble, someone the superhero rescues. Sometimes strong women can appear in comics, but then they are negative.

Meaning of the word "comic" This genre originated in the pages of American newspapers in the late 19th century. "Comics" - an abbreviation for the English "comic" (funny) and "comic" (comic, picture). Drawn stories are an interesting synthesis of literature and graphics. A comic is a series of images that help maintain a coherent narrative. As in the literary work, the main and minor heroes are antagonists. The text may not be there at all or it may be a short signature.
