A few months ago Spotify brought an update that made offline use for podcasts unbearable for me. Since then, I saved myself by shortly switching back online before starting to play. But as of today, that's over.

I really enjoyed Spotify before the update. And yet, when I wanted to share a podcast or episode, I was always annoyed by links being sent to Spotify instead of the podcast provider.

If I wanted to mark a spot in a podcast to come back to later or send someone a note, I usually took a screenshot.

In AntennaPod, however, I now found relief. I can even select what I want to share, and that includes the current playback position. This looks for example like I used it in the post BCH competes fiat not social media.

It is even possible to directly share a file address or the audio file itself. The result will look like this, for example:

The only feature that is better than with AntennaPod right away is the sleep mode for "until the end of episode". However, I can easily do without this by entering the remaining minutes of an episode myself. They are shown, after all. What do you say now?

Why should I still pay bad money for something that is no longer worth it? AntennaPod now is premium to me!

Update: After just a few days of use, it has become clear that the sleep timer is not only much better than expected, but also much better than that of Spotify. There are options that match the high quality of podcast, compared to merely radio.

I really like the auto-enable feature because I don't have to worry about the timer at all. So I will never again fall asleep over an episode and miss the moment that plays my downloaded episode to the end while I sleep. That way I always only have to scroll back the time to find the point where I probably fell asleep, which I chose here.

And it gets even better: the settings reveal a rich treasure of individual possibilities. And that includes generally stopping at the end of an episode. Because even if I haven't fallen asleep by then, I love to enjoy a moment of silence and reflect on the episode I've heard, instead of being immediately sucked into a new topic as I am on the radio or TV.

And finally I want to give a shoutout to Jeremy and Shane Keith Warne (1969-2022). I loved how you not skipped the commemoration at the end of this episode #41 on the death of a legendary cricet player, as life beginns after death, right? Memorable things happened at the whole conversation. Keep it going till the end!

Spotify ist für mich gestorben, hier ist meine Alternative

Vor ein paar Monaten brachte Spotify ein Update, das eine Offline-Nutzung zur Verwendung für Podcasts für mich unerträglich machte. Seither rette ich mich damit, vor Start des Abspielens kurz online zu schalten. Doch das ist ab heute vorbei.

Ich hatte vor dem Update große Freude an Spotify. Und doch hatte mich stets genervt, wenn ich mal einen Podcast oder eine Episode teilen wollte, dass Links zu Spotify versendet werden, statt vom Podcast-Anbieter.

Wenn ich eine Stelle in einem Podcast markieren wollte, um später darauf zurück zu kommen oder jemandem einen Hinweis zu senden, machte ich üblicherweise ein Bildschirmfoto.

In AntennaPod fand ich nun hingegen Erleichterung. Es lässt sich gar auswählen, was ich teilen mag, und das gleich auch mit Nennung der aktuellen Abspielposition. Das sieht dann beispielsweise so aus, wie ich es im Beitrag BCH konkurriert mit Fiat, nicht mit sozialen Medien verwendet habe.

Es ist gar möglich, direkt eine Datei-Adresse oder die Audio-Datei selbst zu teilen. Das sieht im Ergebnis dann beispielsweise so aus:

Die einzige Funktion, die auf anhieb noch besser ist, als bei AntennaPod, ist der Schlafmodus für "bis zum Ende der Episode". Darauf kann ich jedoch leicht verzichten, indem ich die Restminuten einer Episode selbst eingebe. Die werden ja angezeigt. Was sagst Du jetzt?

Warum sollte ich noch schlechtes Geld bezahlen für etwas, das es nicht mehr wert ist? AntennaPod ist für mich jetzt Premium!

Update: Bereits nach einigen Tagen Nutzung hat sich gezeigt, dass der Sleeptimer nicht nur deutlich besser ist, als erwartet, sondern auch deutlich besser, als der von Spotify. Es gibt Möglichkeiten, die der hohen Qualität von Podcast entsprechen, im Vergleich zu bloß Radio.

Ich mag die Funktion Auto-enable sehr, weil ich mich gar nicht mehr um den Timer kümmern muss. So werde ich nie wieder über einer Episode einschlafen und den Moment verpassen, der meine heruntergelade Episode bis zum Ende spielt, während ich schlafe. So brauche ich stets nur die Zeit zurück zu blättern, um den Punkt zu finden, bei dem ich vermutlich eingeschlafen bin, die ich hier wählte.

Und es kommt noch besser: Die Einstellungen offenbaren einen reichen Schatz individueller Möglichkeiten. Und dazu gehört, dass am Ende einer Episode grundsätzlich gestoppt wird. Denn selbst wenn ich bis dahin nicht eingeschlafen von, liebe ich es, zunächst Stille zu genießen und mich der gehötren Episode zu besinnen, statt wie bei Radio oder TV sofort in ein neue Thema hineingesogen zu werden.

Und schließlich möchte ich Jeremy und Shane Keith Warne (1969-2022) ein ehrendes Andenken erweisen. Ich fand es toll, wie Du die Würdigung am Ende dieser Folge #41 zum Tod eines legendären Kricketspielers nicht übersprungen hast, denn das Leben beginnt schließlich mit dem Tod, nicht wahr? In dem ganzen Gespräch sind denkwürdige Dinge passiert. Macht weiter so bis zum Ende!
