Meditation for busy people

There are numerous meditation techniques available around the world all of which have the primary goal of making the mind calm and reaching the inner self. Some are easy to perform and some are quite difficult to master. But in our busy daily life we hardly find time to pursue any sort of meditation, citing lack of time. But actually it is lack of will.

The purpose of meditation is also an important factor. For going deep to your inner self one has to be a serious and regular practitioner devoting longer time, but if the purpose is to calm the mind and enjoy inner peace for some time then as little as 10 minutes a day is enough. But for us sparing 10 minutes is also difficult because of lack of will power. Ideally it should be done in a sitting position but those having problem can do it sitting on a chair also.

Here I will give 3 simple ways to practice meditation.

1 Using an object- It is as simple as focusing the mind on an object in front of you. Any object that induces positive feeling inside you like a flower, a picture of God, or any master you follow, it is up to you. The object should be kept at eye level and about 6 to 8 feet away. One has to just concentrate on the picture or the object, breathe normally and try to slow down the thought process and quieten the mind. Doing for even 10 minutes will have soothing effect on your mind and give you a feeling of peace and balance.

2 Reciting a mantra- Mantra is a powerful tool of meditation and is used widely in Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Sufism. Mantra means that which protects the mind. That which protects the mind from negativity. It can be a single word or a combination of words. Those who take initiation in any religious order are generally given a mantra to recite daily. But for a common man without initiation he can use common mantras, like Hindus have the Gayatri mantras, Buddhist have Om mani padme hum. Similarly other religions must be having something of their own. But those above religion can use any mantra from any religion. The syllables of mantra are basically a certain vibration that it creates and it brings focus and tranquility to the mind. If you don't find a mantra or don't like to do mantra meditation then you can do it on any meditation music available on the internet.

3 Watching the breath- This is the most common type of meditation and most popular also specially in the East. The most common type of watching the breath meditation is to breathe normally and feel the breath going in and going out with your eyes closed. Try to get a rhythm in the breath so that duration of inhalation and exhalation is the same that is if you are breathing in for 3 seconds then breathe out should also be the same. But do not get overly conscious about the timing, in the beginning just focus on the breathing. Breathe normally don’t consciously try deep breathing.

Meditation is one thing that I've been wanting to try but have not attempted. It is not easy to clear the mind from all sorts of thoughts. Thank you for the 3 pointers.

It's all a matter of discipline and practice. 10 mins out of 24 hours.

I have neglected my meditation and thanks to your article I have resumed it a few days ago. It is really not difficult to find 10 minutes a day for it (I spend much more time on read.cash every day). It needs some discipline, but if you set a fixed time for it, it always works.

Yes fixed time and place is better. It's all a matter of habit building.
