Its Me, Seminar Speakers About Public Relations
Three days ago, I went to Padang City, West Sumatra Province to carry out an assignment from the office. I went there with my friend. We participated in work meetings that discussed public relations at provincial and district government institutions. This activity keeps me too busy to find ideas to write on readcash.
We must carry out a belief properly. That's my principle at work. We work to the best of our ability. Little by little we became resource persons like lecturers who teach in class. I think that's the similarity between me and the lecturer when delivering lessons on public relations to staff at provincial and district level institutions.
To be honest, it is not easy to be a staff who works as part of public relations to build the image of the institution. There are several jobs that distinguish public relations in government agencies from public relations working in companies. I do not know how the work of public relations in government agencies in your country. I hope this article gives us another choice as a reading resource in improving the performance of public relations.
Public Relations at Government Institutions
Almost all government institutions have work units that carry out the task of maintaining good relations between the government and the community. Public relations in government agencies have more jobs than public relations in companies. However, the work is not commensurate with the salary received by the staff. This is different from public relations in the company. The better the PR work unit, the higher the salary received.
Public relations units in government agencies work as journalists, content managers, and administrative officers. There are many other jobs that are hard to come up with a name that is similar to that of public relations. In essence, public relations in government institutions have many roles in carrying out the duties of the leadership. So far, public relations in government institutions are seen as receptionists who facilitate everyone who comes to the office.
This video explains the ideal number of work units that carry out tasks in the public relations department:
Public Relations Are Journalists
The staff working in government agencies is a journalist. However, public relations staff do not have a journalist card issued by the Press Council. Because public relations staff in government agencies only write news for the government.
So, public relations staff in government agencies are not allowed to write news other than news about government agencies where we work.
Public relations staff such as journalists carry out their duties to cover the activities of officials in government institutions. So we record activities, write for news scripts, take photos of officials, and publish articles about the news on the website of the office where we work. The similarity of work makes public relations staff like journalists.
There are two types of activities covered by public relations staff. First, of course the activities of officials from government agencies where we work. All work-related activities will be news from the office.
The whole news is news about other institutions' events that invite officials from our office, or when our leaders attend activities anywhere, except personal activities. Because the personal activities of our officials and leaders do not need to be covered and disseminated to the public.
The second type of work we do is covering the activities of other work units. When other work units carry out activities, meetings, public discussions, and other activities. Then the public relations staff must cover the activities of the work unit. The news originating from this work is one of the evidences for compiling a report for the work unit.
The following video is a video about how public relations staff in government agencies prepare themselves before carrying out their duties:
Public Relations Are Content Creators
For now, almost all government agencies have accounts on all existing social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, websites, and YouTube. Therefore, public relations staff play the role of content creators. Public relations staff edit the news and turn that information into content. The product of this work is published to social media.
From this process, the job of public relations staff in government agencies is
Doing coverage and writing news
Take photos and record videos
Publish the news on the website
Converting information from articles into content to be published on social media
As a content creator, public relations staff must have standard skills, namely editing photos and creating interesting quotes from existing manuscripts. After that, the public relations staff must manage social media. In addition, PR staff must observe content published by others related to the work in our office.
