Stress management is often a very puzzling issue for many individuals. It can be, and very often is, a mixture of physical and emotional problems. Stress can be caused by environmental stress, self-imposed stress, physical stress and emotional stress. While these are all responsible for causing stress, it must be pointed out that stress implies a reaction to a stimulus, which in itself is not necessarily negative.

Stress management is important because stress is something that is inherent to our everyday lives. But what exactly is stress? Stress is a response to something in our environment, or an emotional reaction to an internal or external event. When we think of stress, many of us have the image of a person "losing it". While losing it is one way of responding to stress, it's very rare (and often not healthy) for us to express our stress in such a manner. Most of the time, we are more subtle with how we respond to stress.

The typical signs and symptoms of stress can include: sleeplessness, irritability, anxiety, headaches and muscle tension. In addition, there are other less typical signs and symptoms of stress that don't get as much attention. These include: poor eating habits, poor hygiene, drug use, suicide attempts and even sexual promiscuity.

Stress management is a consequence of facing pressure. Pressure has its positive and negative aspects. Positive pressure helps you to perform better in your work. The feeling of achievement at the end of a tough job gives you pleasure and makes you feel happy.

Negative pressure is different from positive pressure in that it is not under your control. You cannot manage it and hence you should learn how to manage it. Negative pressure may come in the form of many things like some natural calamity like landslides, earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes etc. It may come in the form of man-made activities like war or riots, accidents or even some personal loss.

Well, a good place to start is looking back at what kind of stress your experiencing. Do you find yourself over thinking about things? If so, it may be time to take a step back and focus on the things that matter.

Stress is something that can affect us all in some way. It can take a huge toll on our everyday life and if it isn't managed correctly, it can do some serious damage. Stress occurs when the demands of our life exceed the resources we have available to cope with these demands. Some people deal with stress very easily, whilst others find it hard to keep up.
