"The Chocolate"
Her heart is pounding loudly, "would I be caught?" she asked herself. Great fear swept her sanity. The feeling of a 10- year old girl is somewhat overwhelming. She just picked 3 chocolate bars in one of the shelves inside a big department store and secretly slid it in her skirts' pocket. She has been doing it numerous times already and she didn't fail to come out being uncaught. But this time is different, she has no company. Oftentimes she joins her classmates during lunchbreak inside that big store and busy looking for some goods displayed and picked everything they like.
Many times also they bought something for her and paid it by themselves. But those many times made her feel pitiful. She is a product of a poor family. A penny given by her mother the only one staying in her pocket is intended for a ride fare going home. No allowance. No sandwiches or a biscuit for a snack. Only rice and a single boiled-egg for lunch in her lunchbox, but it's ok at least there is something for her tummy to feed on. Her dad was just a poor labourer who feeds them enough.
This time, she wanted something more, she envied those girls who have money to buy themselves those expensive snacks and junkies they want. But she only fit herself in feasting her eyes with those colourful displays on the shelves of that store and gets lucky if they bought her something too.
Whenever they come out of school every day, she goes out with them. But now she wanted to be different. She doesn't want to look pathetic and looks like a dog always following her owner. She wanted these girls to treat her as if she is also something. The first attempt she did it was a successful one thought she thought she'll get caught. Followed by another attempt, third, fourth, she can't count.
Now she is alone, she was late in consuming her lunch because she has to Finnish a task given by her adviser. So after securing her lunch box in her bag and leave it in their classroom, she hurriedly goes out from their school and walked swiftly towards the road directing to the department store which is just a few blocks away from the public school she is studying. She is hoping she can catch with the girls. It is better to be with them because she won't be noticed by the other costumers if she has company.
She's late, the girls already left the store as she can't find them in every lane inside when she arrived. But like a routine, and maybe an addiction she was led by her feet to the specific shelf she used to stand and feast her eyes every time they entered the store. She discreetly picked 3 bars of KitKat and swiftly slid it inside her pocket with her eyes cautiously side glancing without turning her head.
She decided to go out and imagining herself bragging her bars with the girls when she gets back to their school. She will be lauded for having a generous "uncle" who always gives her expensive chocolates. She is approaching 10 steps from the exit, 9... 8.. 7... she met the guard's eyes she always does and continued her steps. She's near from grasping her victory, 6...5... She raised her eyes again. 4...3 there's something from the security guards eyes that looks different. He never left his eyes on her. "Did he saw me?" she asked herself. "But NO he can't see me because he never left his post near the exit/entrance wide door. It's his job."Confidently the girl marched her feet for the remaining steps 2...1 !! A hand just grabbed her collar in the back. Her body became stiff. She has no guts to turn around to find out who is holding her collar behind. By firmly holding her hand, she can barely notice the noddings and small talks between the guard and the stranger. Now the stranger is pulling her and guiding her towards the stairs leading up to the second floor. Her legs are shaking with her hands sweating. She can't swallow the lump that is about to form in her throat. As they ascend the stairs, her mind is floating. Images in her mind, girls laughing and the boys sneering at a poor girl with a handcuff in her hand. Her mom beating her so terribly. Her dad looking at her with a solemn face. Now all are playing in her mind over and over...
The end.
If you want to know the outcome you can comment to me directly. It would be very long to include the whole scenario here.π
I just edited the article. I added the link of its continuation.
This is a true story of a girl close to me who experience lots of ups and downs in her life. One experience she can't ever forget because of poverty. She's a grown woman now living happily with her family and loving husband.
